Jeff Carter Would Be A Nice Consolation Prize
With the disaster that is and continues to be the Brad Richards situation, GM Joe now has some significant cap space to play with. Unfortunately, the UFA crop is underwhelming at best. It seems likely that his best option to improve the team will have to come through trades.
With the Flyers having just traded for the negotiation rights to Bryzgalov, there's all sorts of stories out there about Philly needing to unload some major salary to be able to sign big Bryzgalov and get in under the cap. Rumors abound that the Flyers might look to trade C/RW Jeff Carter and his monster contract (9 years left at $5.27 million/year cap hit).
I don't know about you, but Jeff Carter would look pretty damned spiffy in a Stars uniform. Does Dallas have the assets to trade for him though? The leading idea is that Columbus might be dealing young, talented Jakub Voracek and their first round pick (no. 8) to Philly for Carter. The Stars have a mid-first round pick they could deal, but don't really have a young player the caliber of Voracek aside from Jamie Benn, who isn't going anywhere thank-you-very-much.
Highly unlikely, as they may not have the pieces to get a deal done, but man it would be sweet if GM Joe could finagle a way to get Carter to Dallas. Of course, he should probably focus more on fixing the porous defense, but that's another issue entirely.

I do not think Carter
Is a player the Stars should target. He is a one-dimension player with limited versatility. Which is one of the reasons he may be available.Ya a proven goal scorer would be awesome, but I think for the amount and term of his contract he just is not what this team needs right now. If Mike Richards was the one available I would jump all over it, but he is not half the player Richards is IMO.
He is not
a one dimensional player, look at his corsi and zonestarts
A Philly's fan perspective...
While Carter has his faults, he is DEFINITELY not a 1D player, and was one of the main PKers on the team. A two-way forward who scores 30-35 with a 5.2M cap hit do not grow on trees.
This is the first time I’ve heard the Stars floating the idea. I personally don’t see him going anywhere, but the Leafs and Blue Jackets are said to have more then a passing interest.

The idea isn't being floated around realistically
But nice to hear a fans perspective, I had just read several articles claiming otherwise. But I still think his contract is a little much. Maybe if the Stars were spending to the cap, and it wasn’t such a long term deal it would be appealing. Also what we would have to give up to get him does not make long-term sense for this franchise..again IMO.
5 million in the cap
And a salary escalating to 7 million is a little much for a player who has 13 goals and 21 points in 47 career playoff games. I don’t really care what his corsi numbers say. I obviously do not see him play on a regular basis. However what I hear and read is he is a gifted goal scorer, yes. But he lacks the overall game to really be a difference maker. Which makes sense considering Philly almost traded him for Bryzgalov before the deadline. Which is why they are looking into moving him now.
If for example the Stars got Carter for absolutely nothing. What would that gain them? They would have a team much similar to last season except a downgrade from Richards to Carter. No money to spend on adding important depth pieces and improving the defense. Now of course you would not get Carter for nothing. You would be looking at this years first round pick, plus probably a Glennie type prospect, and a roster player. Then the depth situation is even worse with, again, no money to spend on improving defense or depth. Not to mention sacrificing an already shallow prospect pool.
pretty much agree with brendan1
although if the stars could have Carter for nothing, I’d jump on that. If nothing else, because I don’t think you’re going to really improve this team via free agency this year anyway. Hopefully next year will be better for that, and the team should have an owner and thus funds by then. However, I can’t see us being able to afford the trade value of Carter, and for that reason, it won’t happen.
no way
not on a nine year contract. he’s a good player and i would love to have him but not for a contract of that length. its inevitable that a contract of that length will really hurt at some point. i wouldn’t even give benn that long of a contract right now. just fix the defense, between benn and ribs and wandell and ott i think the center position is just fine. they need d men and more guys on the wing. look for joe to grab a guy or two off the scrap heap, hopefully it pans out the way burish did.
by the way worst e-news ever...
That’s the big deterrent to anyone picking up Carter. He’s actually under contract for 11 years, until 2022. He also has a NTC for part of that, starting in 2013. Short-term it’s a very good deal, long-term… we’ll just have to wait and see.

This is correct
It is 11 more years, not 9. I forgot it was an extension, so it just kicks in next season.
Carter is a hell of a player, though, and plays the type of game that typically ages well. I wouldn’t let the contract be the reason you don’t go get him.

Jakub Voracek does not compare to Jamie Benn.
The guy is a top ten pick who has been average for Columbus in his first 3 seasons. Voracek’s relationship with Mike Commodore led to some questions about the adequacy of his training regimen and commitment earlier this season. He seems most comparable to another Zherdev minus any KHL drama.
Benn has shown definite improvement in his first two seasons, and is a dynamic two-way player. The two just aren’t comparable. That, and trading Benn would effectively be taking the best asset this franchise has and throwing it away. No, no and no.
Read it again there, skippy.
aside from Jamie Benn, who isn’t going anywhere thank-you-very-much
And Voracek very much compares to Jamie Benn. He has more natural talent. He’s a Euro still getting used to the N. American game. They’re the same age. He’s a very valuable, very projectable young forward. Given the choice between the two, I would take Benn in a heartbeat, but don’t act like Voracek is nothing. Besides, I wasn’t even comparing the two directly, just saying that Benn is the only valuable, young, star-potential player (like Voracek) that the Stars currently have. Oh yeah, and I said there’s no freaking way they’re trading him- so calm down.
