2011 NHL Playoffs: Who Are You Rooting For?

Unfortunately, it's that time again: time for Dallas Stars fans to determine just which team they'll be rooting for this postseason, since our beloved hockey team failed once more to make the cut.

Personally, I'll be rooting hard for the Phoenix Coyotes. I'll always have a spot in my heart for Dave Tippett and I generally just really enjoy the way the Coyotes play the game. With Tippett running that ship, it's not hard to imagine why. And when it comes to our Pacific Division brethren, the Coyotes are also the team I hate the least.

It's also going to be fun rooting for a team that 75% of the hockey world feels doesn't belong in the "south".

So, Stars fans....who are you rooting for?

I'm close to indifferent.

but I’d like to see Penguins in the East; the way they play even without Malkin and Crosby is a testament to what depth and good coaching can do.

and Vancouver in the West; I’ll be happy to see them upset, but if not then I’m ok with them going to the finals, they’re a dominant team.

They win in shootouts without them...

should help them in the playoffs. Kidding aside, it is impressive how they played sans Crosby and Malkin, but I don’t think they’ll make a deep playoff run without them.

Because MODANO is a Red Wing--hello!?!

In a perfect world, I would be anticipating cheering for my Dallas Stars in the playoffs right now, and my favorite player of all time would still be wearing a Stars jersey sporting the number 9. But my hockey world hasn’t really been the same since Mo left Dallas, and I’d like to see him win another Cup before he retires. I would have been following his play anyway, but now my loyalty doesn’t have to be divided between the Stars and Mo. I’m rooting for Mike, not for the Wings. (BTW, anytime the Stars have missed the playoffs, I haven’t been able to muster up much interest in following the playoffs unless there’s a former Star—someone I have been a fan of and would be happy for if he won the Cup—on a playoff team that I can root for. But that’s just me.)

Phoenix

For same reasons as you. Also process of elimination. If Turco was starting for the Hawks, I could possibly root for them, but he’s not, and they are the Hawks, so screw em. A true Stars fan really should have a venomous dislike for all these teams except Phoenix, and maybe Van. Pink Wings? Guppies? LA Divers? Ducks? Nash? No way. Give me the Yotes. And Caps in the East.

I like Ryan Kesler

so I’ll mostly be cheering for Vancouver this year. I do agree about Phoenix, though. I don’t hate them the way I do the Sharks, Kings and Ducks.

In the east, I cannot possibly cheer for Philly or Boston. I might be able to cheer for Tampa Bay.

Then I’ll cheer for the Sharts.

I feel the same way about the Yotes!

Tippett’s always been a good coach. I’d like to see him do well and I also hate them the least in the West. I’ll probably also be rooting for the Caps in the east. I use to live up there and one of my best friends is a Caps fan so I’ll join him till they lose in the first round because they can’t finish. :D

So as long as that happens, I’m good.

I' ll be cheering for the Vancouver Canucks, my friend is one so I'll happily root for them

In the East its the Caps for me. Always preferred them to the Pens, couldn’t see myself backing Philly or Buffalo, Rangers? Meh, Tampa Bay perhaps. Boston and Montreal I really couldn’t care less about.

Second in the West will probs the Coyotes and the Red Wings, but I’m not sure if I’d like a rival Pacific Division side winning the Stanley Cup, even if it does make the division look better.

Oh, and I also get to shout LOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU well into the playoffs too, keep the vocal chords warm n’all.

I'm probably pulling for Vancouver.

Not hard to say that they were the best team all season, and as frustrating as the 07 series was, I don’t have much hate for them, at least when compared to the rest of the West. I suppose if Modano or Turco got to win one, though, I wouldn’t be unhappy.

As for the East: Washington, Tampa and Buffalo are fine by me, although I can’t say I’m all that caring about who comes out of the East. Mostly I just want to see some good series.

True.

I suppose I’m more on board with Washington winning. I don’t have any built up animosity towards them, and I suspect they’d be able to make the playoffs in the West, which makes them being in the lesser conference less detracting.

It’s too depressing considering how close we were. And it’s baseball season.

I guess I’d go with Phoenix if I had to choose. And Vancouver next, though you have to admit it’s always fun to watch the top team lose (unless you end up like the NCAA basketball tourny did this year, then maybe not so much…)

So i’ll be rooting for the Habs. As far as the western conference goes I’ll be rooting for the Kings for some reason. A) Because I hate the sharks, and B) because for some reason I like watching the Kings play when it’s not against the Stars. They’re a young team with a lot of energy that i find fun to watch. They’re like a St. Louis Blues who I hate more

Screw Chicago

I hate that we let them in the playoffs. I hope Vancouver wrecks them because if the Stars go down I want Chicago to go down too. In fact I hate all the teams in the western conference playoffs. But I have no admiration for any Eastern teams either. I guess you could say hockey is over for me.

by BennIsBeast on Apr 11, 2011 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't so much root for teams in the playoffs as much as I root against them.

Vancouver/Chicago: I am rooting against the Canucks. Well, mostly their fans. And Luongo.

Sharks/Kings: That’s hopeless and not worth watching. Still, if the Kings could make it interesting…

Wings/Coyotes: Obvious

Ducks/Preds: Vomit. Nashville has never won a playoff series before and I like that about them. Also hate the Ducks. I’m not going to know how I really feel until I start watching those games, then my gut will tell me.

by Brad Gardner on Apr 11, 2011 11:45 AM CDT reply actions

This is what I do ... I root against teams.

And each new series changes who I want to lose most.

However, this year I am modifiying it somewhat to cheer for Modano to get a cup. Other series remain the same. But we will see what my gut says when the games start.

I am rooting

for Mike Modano. I couldn’t give a rat’s ball sack about any team in the league that isn’t the stars, but there are players that you just can’t lose your affection for. Don’t get me wrong, I still hate the Red Wings, but if the Stars aren’t going to be able to fight in the post season, then I really don’t care if they get another one if Mo gets to lift it one more time.

I'm still the tensiest bit unhappy with Mo

The guy is a legend and I’m unbelievably grateful for everything he did for our club over his career. That being said, I don’t think he handled that whole leaving thing very well and quite frankly I felt like he was phoning it in the last couple years and that still bothers me. I know he admitted as much about midway through this year and that’s all well and good but the shine has come off a bit for me. I hate the wings enough already and part of me wants them to lose just so that Mo isn’t vindicated in any way for going there. Does that make me a jerk? Call me selfish but I don’t really want him hoisting a cup in that ridiculous uniform. I want the last good memory of him to still be that last home game in Dallas. You can’t go out any better than that. I know I am holding a bit of a grudge. Only for till the end of this season. After that Mo and me are cool.

GO HABS GO!!!

There are three teams I root for: Stars, Habs, and Islanders. The Stars and Islanders aren’t in, so that leaves me with the Habs. I suppose I’ll want Detroit and Chicago to do well, seeing how Modano and Turco play for them. Maybe Corey Crawford will get injured, or attacked by wolves, or something so Marty Turco can start.

The drive for twenty-five is alive! Go Habs go!

by William Fleishman on Apr 11, 2011 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

You can say whatever you want but I am rooting for Detroit in the West.

Datsyuk, Lindstrom, Modano. I just can’t root for any of the Pacific teams, even for the Coyotes. I don’t hate them like Ducks, Kings and Sharks, but they are just too annoying to watch.

by Supernova10 on Apr 11, 2011 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

Exactly +1

I hate the Red Wings proper but outside of Bertuzzi, there is nobody on their roster I have a dislike for. Watching Lidstrom be the best defenseman at 40, watching Datsyuk skate through 5 guys towards the net and getting a shot on goal is incredible. Draper and Holmstrom are amazingly effective pains in the butt, and I would be happy to have either one of them skating for us in Dallas. What Illyich and Kenny Holland have done in Detroit, is the model we need to follow, and while I am unhappy missing the playoffs 3 years running, we did not fall as far and as fast as the Av’s. For the East it would have to be the Pens or the Bolts.

To me It's not about hatred for the players

(Although I’d add Holmstrom to my hated list. That guys seems like a real jackwagon!) My hatred comes from the annoyance of many of the fans. Bunch of band-wagoners and the like. The Wings are the Yankees of hockey. I just can’t root for them. I hate them!

You really don’t have to hate the Yotes fans because there are only five of them. :D

There would be a load of 96 sweaters at games. He is so damn effective at what he does, he would be a fan favorite. Just like every knucklehead that hates Otter, secretly wish somebody would make a trade for him. I do agree on the fans, they show up everywhere. Yotes are defiinitely a choice because of Shane Doan, Bissonette is funny as hell and of course, I have been a big fan of Tip’s since he was with the Aero’s. With the Yotes, I hope they go someplace where they will be appreciated, and if that is Glendale, so be it.

I was at the Stars Yotes game in December

Sitting right next to the Stars Penalty Box…Bissonette and Barch had a nice little tilt going until Barch lost his balance and cracked his forehead on the ice. Bissonette had a lot of class helping Barch get to his feet, and a good job tap when Barch had to go get repairs.

I don't think anyone will be surprised when I say I'm pulling for Detroit to win it all.

I’ve also got a soft spot for the Lightning, since it is now Stevie Y’s team. They’re like my Wings of the East. I think whoever comes out on top in the East is going to have to go through Philly, though…and I don’t know that anyone will manage it. (I feel a little dirty saying it, but I actually kind of like the Flyers these last few years.)

by WingnutInStarsCountry on Apr 11, 2011 2:24 PM CDT reply actions

Philly was sort of stumblin', bumblin', fumblin' down the stretch though.

So while they aren’t a bad pick, I’d still put them behind Boston and Washington (at least). Then again, those two teams don’t seem to understand that you need four wins to take a series, so maybe Philly can move by them.

by Giant Space Ants on Apr 11, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Boston could definitely be a factor this year.

And I agree that Philly backed their way into the playoffs. Much like Detroit. Much like Chicago. Much like Dallas would have done, had we managed it. I’m just not ready to count any of those teams out of it, though.

I am waiting on Washington to prove that they can make it happen in the playoffs. They’re kind of like SJ to me. Great in the regular season, but they tend to flop in the postseason. I’m fine with them proving me wrong. But they’ve got to prove it.

by WingnutInStarsCountry on Apr 11, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I probably won't be rooting for one specific team

But I can divide the 16 teams into 3 groups. Teams like Washington, Chicago, Vancouver, TB I wouldn’t mind seeing win, Philly, Buffalo, Montreal, Pitt, NY would be teams that I really don’t care either way. And the 3rd group would be the rest of the West and Boston as teams I do not want to see win.

Team James Neal

I’ve never been a Penguins fan, but James will always have a special place in my heart. I’d like to see him do well in his first ever post season. Good luck old friend.

That said, I have Boston winning it, so from a monetary stand point, I’ll be pulling for the Bs.

by LilEagle on Apr 11, 2011 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

I'm wondering how serious Neal's injury is.

He sat out the last game. It was a meaningless game, so they sat Fleury, too. But there was talk of Neal suffering a minor injury in the previous game. Hopefully he’ll be able to play.

But…if he can’t, it isn’t like he’s done all that much for Pittsburgh, anyway.

I have a healthy respect for the Sharks.

As I said in the GDT yesterday, San Jose is really the only other Pacific Division team I respect because they play the game the way it’s supposed to be played – tough, but honest. Plus their fans have always been classy around me and we have in my eyes a friendly rivalry between fan bases. Thus, I have no trouble rooting for the Sharks whenever they aren’t playing the Stars.

It’d be cool to see Turco go deep in the playoffs (even though he’s only a backup now), and while I dislike the ‘yotes, I’ll always be a fan of Dave Tippett, so I wouldn’t mind seeing him go on a run either.

I’ll also be cheering on our boys Neal and Niskanen out in Pittsburgh. Any former Star is cool in my book.

Vancouver/Chicago: Vancouver, I hate how Chicago backed into the playoffs.
Detroit/Phoenix: Phoenix for obvious reasons
LA/San Jose: LA, the lesser of two evils
Nashville/Anaheim: I probably hate Nashville the least out of all the teams in the west so them

Shitty Conference:
Washington/NYR: Washington, I just don’t like the Rangers for some reason
Philly/Buffalo: Don’t really care but I’ll root for the upset. Maybe if Buffalo gets a cup they’ll shut up about ‘99
Boston/Montreal: Don’t care, as long as this series goes to 7 games. It’s gonna be good
Pittsburgh/Tampa: I’d rather see Tampa but I could get behind Pittsburgh without Crosby and Malkin
