Mike Modano- I have to root against him because he's a Red Wing but...

Really I still love the guy, I was watching Canucks after hour with Ryan Kesler and he mentioned his respect and love for Modano and I couldnt help but think about how much he meant to me while he was a star. I can root against this guy but I could never hate him. I love him and I love his game so much that I can't bring myself to hate him even though he's a Red Wing. I don't know if you guys agree with me but I just wanted to say that as much as i realize it was the right move for the organization I still love and miss Modano and I hope he retires soon before people forget that he was a Star for most of his career and definitely his glory years.

He was always my favorite player

but honestly I lost a little love for him after that quote that he was coasting the last few years.

I agree to an extent

I ….am bitter towards him right now. Not so much because he decided he had to keep playing hockey. Just how he did it, he could have just swallowed his pride a bit and played the lesser role and made a decision and I think the door may have been open for him. He could have worked hard and put in the effort instead of coasting the last few years and that may have made a significant difference in the 2 missed playoff years. All that I could still forgive, but the number of times he had to come out and talk about the Stars and the negativity and the lack of trying just got to me and it will be a few years at least before I get over it.

Mo was more than willing to play a lessor role.

He was never offered that, and that was the correct thing to do. Joe correctly recognized it was time for others to step up and they couldn’t do that with Mo here. Not because of Mo, but because the others wouldn’t take that step if he was still here.

As far as his comments in Det … really what do you expect him to say? It’s nice here in Detroit … but this one time back in Stars camp!? lol He is on the Red Wings now and has to commit to that. As far as his comments on effort … I believe when he was here he tried as hard as he thought he could. But in retrospect, in a new environment, he recognized that he felt he could have done more. Just more indication it was time for both parties to move to the next stage.

For the first time in my life, when Detroit is not playing or impacting the Stars I find myself checking the box scores and hoping Mike can find a little bit of the old magic trying to come back for a bad injury.

Mo will be the face of Texas and Dallas Stars hockey

I don’t think that Mo phoned it in during his last couple seasons. I do think that GM Joe had no choice but to let Mike go, there was a new group of leaders who needed their chance to take control of the locker room. Detroit gave him a chance to play one more year, in his hometown, and I wish him well. I feel horrid that he spent half the season on the shelf, but he will be as fully ready for the Wings playoff push as he could be. While I hope that the Stars will play for the Stanley Cup, the only other teams I want to see compete (if the Stars are playing golf at that point) will be Pittsburgh or Detroit.
First and foremost, is this collection of players, this team, the Dallas Stars. Go Stars Go!

I watched the Wings game the other night against SJ

And couldn’t help but think about what a complete non-factor he was. And that was kind of sad.

It's almost unfair

Mike was starting to get a little groove going when he got hurt, now he comes back after 4 months in rehab and has to get his legs back and I have only seen him take one shot. If he had the whole season maybe it is a little renaissance but likely, I am suprised if Detroit offers him another opportunity next year. Maybe Joe offers closure and Mike signs a 1 day contract so that Mike can retire as a Dallas Star.

It took him 20 games or so at the beginning of the season to become a factor in the games.

But he was really starting to turn it on and become the Mo everyone wanted to see before the injury. I don’t know if it will take him another 20, but I’d expect ten or more before he really starts to click with the pace of the game and his linemates again. Babcock finally put the lines back to how they were pre-injuries in the last couple of games, and I think that will help. By the time the playoffs start, I’d expect to see him as a presence on the ice again.

Were all bitter now

But look at Hatch. Everyone love hatch and he did the same thing at a better time in his career. Then he played with Hitch in Philly. So everyone will get over it, he’ll still get his statue.

the Mo situation is not even remotely comparable to Hatchers

Hatcher was our captain and bailed to the hated Wings because they offered more money. He had plenty of career left and was an integral part of this team. He sold out. Loved him while he was here, but he sold out.

Mo was pushed out and had no chance. The Wings gave him an opportunity he would have had no place else in the league and they are his home town team.

Pushed seems harsh. His play and effort over the last few seasons didn’t give him a contract offer in Dallas.

by Why on Mar 6, 2011 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

I know I wasn't very clear

My point is both players left dallas with a sour, bitter?, taste in mouths. Now everyone in Dallas still admires Hatch. My point is obviously Dallas will welcome Mo, and the only question is how tall his statue will be. I believe 7’5 is good

So I guess if I made a topic about how great Trevor Linden would’ve been if he was a Star, it would be a huge hit?

Let me know; I might write it in three weeks or so.
