This is just the very start of our NHL Trade Deadline coverage today my friends. We don't like to brag often, but Defending Big D is going to be all over this deadline day frenzy like Pierre McGuire is on any hockey player he gets within a one foot radius of. (Sorry for such a creepy visual)
Anyway, consider this your one-stop shop for all trade news involving the Dallas Stars (of course) but we'll also be keeping an eye on the other five Pacific division teams today and if they are involved in any major deals that we feel will impact the division race (which we still consider the Stars to be a part of) then we'll be reporting it here as well.
Feel free to share your opinions and comments below as always. When and if news breaks we'll be posting links to new posts covering that news in the comments section as well as refreshing this post with links to all the news of the day.

that they spend all year ripping our defense and talking about how bad it is, and then the guy who’s a regular healthy scratch on one of the “worst” defenses in the nhl is a good pick up for a team.

Or is the offseason the place to do that? you have to think that the creditors would like to see Richards tied down for awhile, makes it easier to sell the team.
The Ottawa Sun reported that the Stars offered "market value" last night.
He turned it down and said he wants 8 years.

A big physical defense man….my gut tells me Adam Foote could come here. I wouldnt mind that….but I would prefer a younger guy in his mold.

I dont really like Anisimov and a 1st round in a weak draft
being the main piece in the Richards puzzle. If it doesnt have Staal, Del Zotto I personally dont like it. They always say whoever gets the best player wins the trade, and I do not believe Anisimov or a mid 1st rounder in a weak draft comes close, A Staal type player does.

Ah, gotcha.
I don’t think the Stars are thinking that Larsen makes Richards’ non-trade worth the risk. This trade isn’t about going out and getting a defenseman, it’s about geting value for a player you don’t think you can keep on July 1.
Bottom line, if Stars think they can keep him…he won’t be traded.

McLean was GM of the Jackets from 98 to 2007 (or so) …
There were times where Morrow for Zherdev would have been a solid deal… Not now of course…

Both guys were pretty highly regarded at one point.

You can’t get “something”. Even if you feel there’s a big risk, then you still have to hold off for a trade that offsets his loss as much as possible.

are on the 1st PP unit. Pretty hard to add someone in there. Best chance is if you put Goose on the point and have Richards take the face offs.

This is an odd one
cause both Richards and the Stars want to continue the relationship. It’s all due to the sale and when it will complete. My feel is unless it is a really substantial offer that Joe would rather make a playoff push and hope the ownership issue is settled before July 1. Now if it’s May and still looks like now, then he may be willing to move him just to make sure he gets something.
He can move his rights after the season.
He won’t get near as much, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it played out that way. Other team gets first crack at negotiating before anyone else can get involved. Just like Bouwmeester.

Here's the thing about adding depth
Once Grossman is back they have 7 d-men.
Once Richards is back they have way more than enough healthy forwards.
Unless it’s a move that also will affect next season as well, I don’t see how it makes a lot of sense to start messing with stuff…unless it’s a real no brainer, and those kinds of players won’t be acquired cheaply

He has been saying exactly that for a very long time.
Don’t know why people think it isn’t true. Like he mentioned, with new owners he wants to see who the GM and obviously coach would be. It is not just the Stars coming up with the money, a big part of it is what the ownership direction is. I don’t think Brad signs without knowing that. Why should he?
I did like the way he emphatically said “I am a Dallas Star!”. He sure sounds like he plans on playing the season out and then addressing the other issues.

We know he wants to stay. I think the question becomes, by keeping him, do you increase your chances for at least some playoff success to the point of helping the team get sold, or the flip side of, by trading him, do you significantly hurt the odds that someone is willing to buy the team because the time table for making a profit just got larger. Regardless of what gets done, they have to be looking at the long term effect it will have on the team, as well as just this season.
I think the only way he’s right is if they know for a fact that ownership will NOT be in place.
Otherwise, it’s worth the risk if the Rangers aren’t offering more than that. Their pick won’t be that great and I haven’t heard anyone particularly excited about this draft class yet.
The Stars NEED to make the playoffs. Desperately. For PR. For season ticket holders. For everything. They need it desperately.

Well two things are clear
1) If the Stars are not sold and Richards goes else where they would be “organizationally irresponsible”
2) If they are sold and resign Richards they were smart. (baring a GM doing something stupid)
The question comes down to the amount of certainty Joe has with his inside knowledge of the sale going through by say June 1. Are you good with hanging on to Brad with a 90% chance of the sale being done? What about if it is only 50%? Guess thats why Joe makes the big $ !
Personally, I would be good with
maybe a 80-85% certainty on the sale closing by June 1 to roll with Brad to go after a playoff spot to bring in cash, infuse excitement in the fan base and experience in our youngsters. Then revisit everything in May or so. If the sale process has blown up then bail for what you can get with Brad a la Bouwmeester. It’s also possible (unlikely) that Brad has a change of heart about a short extension after the season has ended, esp if there was a nice playoff run.

We were all in love with Neal until he was traded and now all of a sudden we’re bashing him? Have some class, he did a lot of good things for us and played some really good hockey. He didn’t choose to leave, he was traded for what we needed the most which was a good puck moving D-man.

I like the guy and wish him nothing but the best in Pittsburgh.
Just tired of all the “Now that he’s playing with top linemates he’ll be amazing” stuff.
So, in all fairness to Eklund, who is notoriously full of crap so often
He actually hit the nail on the head a number of times today, and beat Bob McKenzie to the punch on Twitter.
This was all rather anti-climactic.
Which is fine.
Penner was a pretty big deal.
The deal was pretty good for both teams, but I would be very happy as Edmonton with what I got.

good to see i didn't miss anything huge while in class.
Penner to LA seems like the biggest deal of the day.
LA has been so up and down (like the rest of the division) this season.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see how this will play out.
Maxime Lapierre to Vancouver
Eklund beat McKenzie to the punch again. I’d say that’s a solid, solid pick-up for playoff time after how excellent he was last year.
