All options are in play here. It's certainly not my first choice. I've maintained all along that we'd like to keep Brad as a Dallas Star for a long period of time. There's a lot of uncertainty with our side as far as ownership that are a concern for them. But, all options are open. It's certainly going to have to be a good type of deal in order to pry him away from us because we are sitting tied for eighth right now and have a lot of home games coming up in March.

Joe Nieuwendyk on NHL Live, discussing the possibilities of a Brad Richards trade. He also said that he's discussed a possible trade with some teams, but he's not actively shopping Richards.

Will have to overpay to get him so I say..

So I’ll take Marc Staal and Derek Stepan for Richards and Daley!

They're in a playoff hunt

it would have to be Robidas plus because with that new contract I consider Daley a net negative. Besides Stephan isn’t going to be traded nor will Staal.

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Well,

probably more than they could get offered. Staal>>Daley. Stepan is 20 and is on pace for over 20 goals. Listed as a center but to be honest I don’t know if that’s what he’s playing for the Rangers. Scouting report says he’s fast, gritty, good in both zones, and can obviously score. Just throwing out suggestions.

Doughty.

We’ll take Doughty and Schenn, please.

by GCO on Feb 23, 2011 1:17 PM CST via mobile reply actions   1 recs

I don't think they'd go for that

But if I could take any young defense man in the league, it would be Doughty. His value, if you include his potential despite already being as good as he is, actually might be nearly comparable to Richie. If I were Joe, and Doughty was on the table, even without Schenn, I’d have to think about that one pretty hard. I’m in the “nothing you get for Richards is worth it, despite the UFA problem” camp, but that’s because I don’t think anyone would trade someone like Doughty.

by PSyCo2012 on Feb 23, 2011 1:25 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

If Doughty were on the table

It should Richards for Doughty straight up.

Problem is, you’re not going to get anything near that value in any trade, lol.

Nothing but wishful thinking and joking on my part

That’d be a steal — and the sort of thing Nieuwy would jump at, I’m sure.

by GCO on Feb 23, 2011 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly,

which is why I’d rather chance losing him in free agency then get crap in return or a pick that won’t help for 2-3 years and still probably never have the impact of Richards.

This point of view

makes no sense to me. Stars in freefall likely to miss the playoffs so instead of getting something for Richards whom if he were as committed as he and his agent have claimed would have already signed a new deal. Instead Dallas gets not even the possibility of improving and is worse next year when it again matters. Why is that something to be sold to fans?

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Not likely

To get something that would help for awhile for Richards. So for next year trading him vs losing him in free agency..won’t be much difference for next year’s team.

However if you take the chance of holding onto him there’s a decent chance new ownership will be in place and he’ll sign and they’d have the budget to add a couple more good players. If you trade Richards you’re giving up on the next few years right now. If you hold onto him there’s the chance you could improve your team enough through free agency to be a legitimate contender next season.

What you say about if Richards was really committed he’d have signed by now, well why would he sign until he knows what this franchise is going to be? Is it going to continue to be in limbo on a shoestring budget? Is it going to be sold to an owner who will let them use the full cap? Will it be sold to an owner who KEEPS them on a shoestring budget? Those are all things I’d want to know if I had the ability to play anywhere I wanted and was going to sign the last lucrative contract of my career.

They've been talking about

new ownership for two years and it hasn’t happened. What is magically going to change between now and July? Also its no foregone conclusion that they won’t get back an NHL ready player or two but even if they don’t not getting anything for the future whenever that is is poor asset management.

Your final paragraph is exactly my point. I don’t blame Richards for not signing but that’s the very reason they have to trade him. If this team were still leading the Pacific that would be one thing but they’re not so go ahead and make the tough call. Trade him and if your ownership miracle happens, then talk to him again come July. Holding on hoping for something different that what’s been the status quo since last July is foolhardy at best and could conceivably set this franchise back another five years.

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

What's stopping Joe from keeping Richards now to push for the playoffs and then trading him a la Bouwmeester in the offseason if we can't get a deal done.

Buys time for new ownership and money to come into the picture. Gives us a chance to make the playoffs and we’ll still get something for him, maybe not as much but I think it would be worth the risk.

This is exactly what should happen

The only way he gets traded now is if Nieuwy is blown away by a deal and then only by the right team.

To Tampa Bay

For Lecavalier and Connolly, and TB 1st or 2nd this year.

by Gregory Smith on Feb 23, 2011 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

Lecavalier?

screw that. he’s on his way down. tampa’s 1st round is going to be way late too. not at all worth it

tongue in cheek…Connolly is a good prospect tho.

Seems like the media is only talking about it because they have nothing else to talk about or hype up their hours of trade deadline day coverage.

The two names I keep hearing are Richards and Stastny and I don’t really think either of those guys are going anywhere.

by GenericBrand on Feb 23, 2011 1:55 PM CST up reply actions

Stastny could be a possibility

After the comments his father made. LOL. But it doesn’t seem all that likely to happen, to me.

by WingnutInStarsCountry on Feb 23, 2011 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

mostly the fact that at that point the best you are looking at is a conditional pick.

by TimAH on Feb 23, 2011 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

and if Richards

blocks the trade then because he’s already in discreet talks with another club via his agent? He may be willing to move at the deadline for a shot at teh cup but what’s his motivation to go through with a trade days before he’s a free agent and able to negotiate with the club(s) of his choice without pressure?

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 11:37 PM CST up reply actions

if they do trade him...

please let it be to a team we only see 2 times a year.
trading a guy of Richards caliber within the division, let alone conference, is absolutely insane to do.

by Ross Phillips on Feb 23, 2011 1:55 PM CST reply actions

Let's trade Richards for 15 5th round draft picks

Obviously we know how to draft in the later rounds!

(Sarcasm, I promise.)

by T Bouldin on Feb 23, 2011 2:01 PM CST reply actions

If Nieuwendyk trades Richards it will be no playoffs 2011 and probably 2012 – no matter who comes in return to Dallas! And we would waste another season (2011-2012) and with that the prime years of Morrow and Ott and Robidas… Please trade underperformer Ribeiro, I’m sick of watching him holding on to the puck way too long at everything game situation!! He is a non-factor compared to Richards.

by Alex from Germany on Feb 23, 2011 2:12 PM CST reply actions

Well perhaps since they're all here

and we’re wasting already then they’re not collectively all that great to begin with. I know everyone wants to see the sunny side here but reality is once again smacking people in the face and they’re trying to deny what’s actually in front of them.

Dallas hasn’t blown it up and hasn’t gotten anywhere but 11th just like last year. They dumped Tippett. They changed systems. They didn’t sign Modano because he was a cancer in the room. They dumped Turco because he had lost a step. They changed coaching staffs and have now moved Neal. Maybe collectively Morrow, Ribiero, Richards, and Robidas aren’t as good as people want to believe.

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't mind Ribs with the puck

It’s when he doesn’t have it that’s been a little hard to watch lately

by Brad Gardner on Feb 23, 2011 2:24 PM CST reply actions

Still don't get it...

What’s up with trading Ribs?
They tried it, didn’t work…
Only problem is that, he seems number two… Doesn’t matter if Richards is out.

by Henri Muroke on Feb 23, 2011 2:44 PM CST reply actions

How about Schultz (top 4 cost controlled d-man), Perrault (developing 2/3C), and a No. 1. Enough from the Caps for two months of Richards?

by red4z on Feb 23, 2011 4:04 PM CST reply actions

they're going to want Orlov

at minimum and probably a young center back as well. Which is why LA and NYR are both good options.

by Hull Fan on Feb 23, 2011 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

I think they’d move Orlov actually. They’ve got a few young center options – Perrault (good skill, but undersized and probably limited upside as 2C), Johannson (more likely a very good 3C when he develops, but likely off limits), Eakin (tearing up juniors and should compete for a spot as 3C next season), and Kuznetsov (WJC hero, but they’re not moving him and he’s probably a wing in the NHL anyway).

Tell Joe to call GMGM. Caps need a center in the worst way.

by red4z on Feb 23, 2011 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

Man, no one seems to consider the metaphysical aspect of trading Richards. Look how this team responded when our big players started dropping like flies. Burish, Benn, Richards..these guys deflated and lost hope. Then with new players called up, they lost chemistry, which was very strong prior to the break. Now we see how the addition of Benn, Burch, Barch………AND the mental stabilization of adding a solid d-man, back in the lineup have boosted the morale and chemistry of the team. Plus dumping two players who were liabilities (Nisky and Neal). Like it or not, beyond his 20 goals, Neal cost this team plenty goals as well. Which they had a stat for “net” goals.
What do you think will happen if Richards is traded, no matter who we get in trade? Trading Richards would decimate the locker room, likely taking 2-3 years to recover and rebuild the faith and chemistry. These guys aren’t 14 points back of 8th. They’re 6 points out of 3rd with nearly all division games remaining. I love where this team is personnel-wise and wouldn’t change a thing, even Vincour, other than perhaps some depth on the 4th line. Losing so many man-hours to injury in a short span was a bit of a fluke, and would derail most teams.
