I felt that the last time I posted on a single player that people felt I was predicting that he would be drafted by us or that he would be drafted at all. Therefore I have decided to write a piece of 10 players for anyone who is interested in this kind of thing should keep an eye on. They are selected by me as those who might be of interest to the Dallas Stars and researched as far as I could find on the internet. I should point out as a British ice hockey fan its very hard to see any of these players in person and I must rely on others scouting reports of these players. I have tried to make sure these stats are as up to date as possible.
So here are my ten players to watch in the coming months (at this point).
Current Team: Brampton Battalion
Current League: OHL
Current Stats: 31 Games, 5 Goals, 13 Assists, 18 Points
Dylan Blujus was B rated by the NHL central scouting. Though he considers himself a defensive defenseman it is clear from the amount of time that he spends on both the power play and penalty kill that he has offensive talent. Defensively he has very good position, battles hard and has a good work ethic. His downsides however are seen as a lack of physicality for his size (this can be seen by his lack of serious penalty minutes - 10 PM so far this season). He also can improve upon his skating.
Current Team: KalPal
Current League: SM Liiga
KalPal U18 Junior B SM Sarja Q: 6 games, 6 Goals, 9 Assists, 15 Points
KalPal U20 Junior A SM Liiga: 18 Games 10 Goals, 12 Assists, 22 Points
KalPal SM Liiga: 8 Games 1 Assist, 1 Point KalPal ET: 3 Games, 1 Assist 1 Point \
There is very little I can find on the internet with actual scouting reports in relation to Henri Ikonen, Just murmurs of good skill. It will be interesting to see how he plays in one of the toughest leagues outside of North american. He is ranked by the Central Scouting Service as the 5th top finnish skater in this year's draft.
Position: Right Wing
Current Team: University of Notre Dame
Current League: NCAA Current Stats: 18 Games, 4 Goals, 7 Assists, 11 Points
Austin Wuthrich is in his second year of draft eligibility. It is likely that he would have been drafted in 2011 however an injury derailed his entire season. He has a gritty style and is very strong around the boards. Dallas has in the past liked prospects who are taking the NCAA route. Could be an interesting prospect.
Current Team: Calgary Hitmen
Current League: WHL
Current Stats: 30 Game, 2 Goals, 11 Assists, 13 Points
Jaynen Rissling has been a big shut down defenseman who has logged significant minutes playing for the Hitmen so far this season. He can skate, move the puck an play with toughness. He has the potential to be a solid two-way defenseman and is not afraid of stepping into the offensive zone.
Nationality: Joint American Swedish
Current Team: Cornell University
Current League: NCAA Current Stats: 11 Games, 4 Goals, 3 Assists, 7 Points
Joakim Ryan is a small mobile offensive defensiveman who went undrafted in 2011. Considered by some to have top end offensive talent he is seen as having problems with inconsistency. Another NCAA prospect who might be an interesting prospect. However for the Stars I think his size might be an issue considering in recent drafts we have edged towards picking players who are at least 6"0 (ish) . He is rated B on the NHL central scouting list.
Current Team: Jokerit U20
Current Team: Jr A SM Liiga Current Stats: 27 Games, 11 Goals, 23 Assists, 34 Points
Esa Lindell is an offensive defenseman and considered to be one of the top 5 finnish players entering the dradt. The number of points for a defenseman to be putting up is quite impressive, however looking at his penalty minute total ( 4 so far) it is unlikely he is a physical defenseman in his own zone. His offensive ceiling is still unknown at this point but he has the potential to be a very good offensive defenseman. Though i have found no comparisons like this on the scouting of him, I think he is a Goligoski/Larsen style defender.
Current Team: MODO/MODO J20
Current League: Elitserien/SuperElit Current Stats
MODO J20: 19 Games, 5 Goals, 14 Assists, 19 Points MODO, 6 Games, 0 Points
Ludvig Byström impressed many scouts at the Ivana Hilka tournament over the summer. In fact he is predicted to go in the first round by TSN's Craig Button. He is considered a smart defenseman, However it will be interesting to see how his play in the Eliterien goes playing against those who are older than him. His stock has risen substantially and it is possible that he will get picked within the first half of the first round if he continues to impress scouts with his plays.
Position: Left Wing
Current Team Södertälje/Södertälje J20
Current League: Allsvenskan/SuperElit
Södertälje: 29 Games, 2 Goals, 6 Assists, 8 Points
Södertälje J20: 3 Games, 2 Goals, 2 Assists, 4 Points
Emil Lundberg is a prototypical power forward. Big, Skilled with nice hands. In the year before this season he set the record for points in the J18. However it doesn't appear that he is carrying this on into this season. This has hit his draft stock badly so far, dropping him from nearly a first round pick into a third round. He has been compared to Johan Franzen.
Position: Right Wing
Current Team: Plymouth Whalers
Current League: OHL
Current Stats: 25 Games, 5 Goals, 10 Assists, 15 points
Tom WIlson is a big hard hitting forward. He is an efective forechecker and has plenty of raw talent. He has been described as a Ryan Getzlaf/James Neal esque power forward. He has been predicted to go either in the first or second rounds of the draft. Has been compared to Stefan Noesen (Texas Native drafted in the first round in 2011) but apparently is more talented.
Position: Left Wing
Current Team: Baie-Comeau Drakkar
Current League QMJHL
Current Stats: 29 Games, 12 Goals, 20 Assists, 32 Points
Raphaël Bussières is a good offensive forward. He is a good skater and is willing to fight along the boards but in order to become better he needs to work on his defensiv game which is lacking at the moment. If he becomes a more rounded player he could become a good two way forward in the NHL . His offensive talents are there, it is his defensive work that will help him improve his game from just being a purely offensive forward.
