first off before all of you start whining that i'm down on brendan morrow let me say this, he's been a very good player for the stars for a decade, he's been a good captain and its been a joy to watch him play all these years. he's been a good player not because he has more talent than most players, but because he's simply been tougher and willing to outwork people. those qualities have endeared him to me and alot of others. i'm just starting to think that maybe he's become more valuable as a trade chip.
let's be honest here, he hasn't had a great start to the season. the three penalties the other night show how his lack of athleticism is really starting to hurt his play. he'll be 33 in january but i feel his body may be older than that. he's a physical hard working player, that style of play tends to wear guys down at some point. add in the fact that he's undersized compared to what most grinders/ power forwards and i think this has sped up his decline. i wouldn't say he's been injury prone but he does have history of being nicked up all the time, such as playing with a broken bone in his foot in order to be on the ice for modano's last games. i understand why he did what he did in that situation but let's be honest here, that was a stupid thing to do. he risked further damage to his foot in order to play in games that sentimental value and nothing else. i appreciate that night just like the rest of you, but it didn't help get them in the playoffs. he's had the severed tendons in his wrist in 2006 and that torn acl in 2009. those are major injuries, but he hasn't missed large chunks of the season every year, as evidenced by the fact that he showed up for all 82 last season. i think alot of the issues with him being hurt are related to his size and style of play. sure a guy like modano might be hurt once in awhile, but his size and speed helped him to avoid the collisions that morrow takes every game. last year he had a career year scoring 33 goals, with his age i really doubt we'll see him do that again. in addition to these things i've noticed something about his game the last few seasons, if he's not scoring goals he's simply not much of a factor anymore. take last season for example, he seemed to disappear quite a bit and then he breaks his nose and plays like his hair is on fire about 15 games after that. but when he's not on a scoring streak what else is there? its been the same thing this season, if he isn't scoring i don't notice him much unless he's taking penalties. i think that jamie benn is clearly the future captain of the team and the stars are in need of a guy who can score consistently, why not put morrow together as part of a package and see what you can get for him? i know this will make some people uncomfortable because he's the last guy from those teams in the late 90's, but he's not what he once was, and even if he still is he won't be for much longer. so why not try to get something for him that can help the team in the future? i honestly don't believe he will be with the team in a few years anyway, so i think they should trade him and give a guy like vincour a shot at the top 6. i also think that ribs are numbers are not what they should be and morrow has a big hand in that, and that gully should probably give him a few healthy scratches to motivate him or help him recover from any injuries he may be hiding. in my opinion if you have to healthy scratch someone to wake them up then thats not the guy i want as the captain of my team. so what does everyone think? am i the only person that sees these things going on with him and that thinks maybe its time to think about the future regarding him and who should wear the C? im not trying to rip him to shreds or say he sucks, i'm simply saying maybe it's time to move on.
