Dallas Finally Scores But Not Enough; Fall To San Jose 4-1
For the fifth time in a row the Dallas Stars suffer a loss - this time by a 4-1 score to the San Jose Sharks - but your eyes do not deceive you for there is actually a crooked number where there had been a zero for the Stars over the last couple of games. Mike Ribeiro with the honors as he scored to make sure the Stars didn't go a whole ten periods without scoring a goal.
Happy days are here again?
As an added bonus, when the Stars played even strength tonight they were actually playing fairly well. Grated they were still out shot and gave up one more goal than they scored while playing 5 on 5 (or 4 on 4), but compared to the previous four games it was a much better effort overall.
But two things were the Stars undoing tonight. The Sharks power play which victimized the Stars two of four times was the biggest culprit but the Stars frustration that started to boil over midway through the second period was not much of a help to the cause either.
The last five minutes of the third were a clear demonstration that the Stars have had enough and aren't going to take it any more.
But for all the frustration on the ice, the Stars at least have to be a little happier with tonight's game right? Shots were a little more even, the emotion and energy was at a much better level. These are positives worth building on and a sign that the Stars may be close to snapping out of this funk sooner rather than later.
Aren't they supposed to kill penalties? - The Stars PK was the worst part of the game tonight by far and it was mostly because Dallas has become way to passive and have stopped boxing out opposing players from crashing the net or making cross ice passes in front of the crease. It almost feels like we've take a trip to last season when it was routine to see defensemen way out of position and not doing their primary job of protecting the front of the net. Bottom line, the defense needs to get tougher in a hurry.
So Raycroft lost another game huh? - Look, Raycroft wasn't sharp in net and I'm sure he would like another chance at stopping the goals from Brad Winchester and Jamie McGinn. That Winchester goal was especially smelly considering Kris Barch and Eric Nystrom had fired their team (and the crowd) back up and for a moment got the momentum pendulum swinging their way with two big fights only to have the air leave the building seconds later.
But with all that said, Andrew can't exactly score goals for this club and right now that's the biggest concern this team has. Lets see the Stars score more than once in a game, then we can worry about the state of backup goaltending.
But at least they did score - Hopefully that means the gripping of sticks will lessen which can lead to more accurate shots on goal. The Stars were credited with 22 missed shots which of course means if they had even gotten half of those on net they would have out shot the Sharks and given themselves a better chance considering that Antti Niemi was good for San Jose, but not overly great..
But yes they scored. Hopefully Razor's 'ketchup' analogy on the broadcast tonight (you know how ketchup stubbornly stays in a bottle until it starts coming out) proves to be true.
And they were really physical - 53 hits in a game? That seems a little ridiculous but the Stars were hitting anything that moved tonight as is seems to be the case when the Stars and Sharks meet. Mark Fistric had 11 hits, Stephane Robidas with 9, Steve Ott in 7 and Brenden Morrow with 6 were your team leaders tonight.
So what moves do the Stars make now? - Well outside of maybe getting Philip Larsen into a game (please Coach Glen?) there isn't much that can be - or needs to be - done. The forwards played better tonight and the defense needs to get tougher in front of their net (and part of that is the responsibility of the forwards as well) but it's silly to think the Stars will make any kind of roster moves yet.
Just know that tonight was a much better night for the Stars.

We will get the next one
im encouraged by what i saw tonight, might have lost 5 but much more passion in the game. Yeah, refs and pens are killing us now, but we stood up for each other, battled till the end.
with the oil here in a few nights, a team we also have history with, im thinking we’ll get back on the horse.
I know allot are bummed by the losing streak, but came up against a good team tonight, whilst fighting some issues. We have scored, and fought for each other, Next step is a win.
Pardy and Fistric need to be split, either bring in Larson or seperate them, they are both far to similar to be paired.
I cant wait for the next SJS game, these 2 teams are going to have a good old rumble this season
I doubt
this team beats Edmonton, and I know they won’t beat the Kings.
Edmonton hung 5 1st period goals on Chicago tonight. They’re playing good team defense, and getting good goaltending. They also have a very good powerplay.
Considering the Stars’ below average penalty kill, and the way they continue to hand out powerplays like Halloween candy, this sounds like the losing streak will reach 7, or more.

Right now
Edmonton is the better team. Without Goose, Dallas has no advantage at even strength. Oilers PP and PK easily outclasses Dallas.
I don’t think it will be an Oilers blowout, but 2-1 or 3-1 sounds right.
Oilers are beating Chicago 7-2 early 2nd…

Edmonton isn't great. They're just well coached.
The Stars can take them if they play like they’re capable.

It's an 82 game season
The better team doesn’t always win.
The losses
Yes, tonight’s team was a good one.
So are Detroit, Pittsburgh and I even consider Florida a good team this year.
Has just been a tough schedule and has been a bad few games for the Stars to slump.
Remember, Detroit went on a 5 or 6 game losing streak recently only to turn it around. The Stars should not lose sight of their good start to the season and hopefully they’ll snap out of the rut against the Oilers.

Just shows what happens
when your glue guys are missing, I mean Goligoski really makes Pardy/Fistric look that much better. When you stick Fistric and Pardy together they are a mess. And this is the type of game that Adam Burish just fiends for. Gotta just defend the house until they are healthy again. Larsen please on Monday
Let's make it trend #LetDirkDropThePuck, @J0RDANSALEH follow me on Twitter
They don't currently have a second line, and teams are going all out to stop Benn.
And that pretty much sums things up.
And, they’re encouraged to ice the puck. The guys that inevitably need to ice the puck the most are the guys that can’t transition…IE the bottom two lines and Pardy/Fistric. Those two also aren’t very good defensively, and the Stars aren’t good at faceoffs. So, you’re giving up good ice vs bad defensive players with an almost certainty of losing the faceoff. That’s a problem….

I was at the game. Officiating was atrocious.
They were calling things that never happened, and not calling things that were.
Completely disagree about the state of our backup comment in the article. He lets in soft goals all the time, pretty much every game he’s played. Raycroft has not been a reliable backup since around December of last year.
@AdamBath on Twitter
Very true about the backup 'tender being weak
But the team has been losing regardless of the goaltenders and that to me is a bigger worry than the odd game that Raycroft has played in.
If Kari had played tonight, it might have reduced the goals against, but at some stage the Stars are going to have to find a way to score more than 1 (or zero) goals in a game.
Twitter: @murrayvwhite
I agree completely
I haven’t had any confidence in Raycroft since the Boston game. He did well in the game against LA, but he’s allowed at least four goals in every other game he’s played, and it’s unreasonable to expect this team to score 5 goals whenever Raycroft gets a start.
Right
But he’s only played in what, four or five games? I think one or two of those he’s had decent GA, no? The LA game for example.
I seem to recall Kari letting in 6 against the Avs, as well as a handful in a few other games too.
There’s no doubt at all that Kari is awesome and Raycroft is sub-par so I totally agree with all comments being made in that regard and yes, we should certainly not have to score 5 goals when the trend with Raycroft is to let in 4, and I for one would actually welcome a change at the backup ‘tender position…… but there’s much more to be worried about I think at this stage with the team in front of the goalies.
Twitter: @murrayvwhite
Not saying I disagree...
But more often than not Raycroft is ensuring they have no chance at winning. At least when Kari is in net we can focus on the offense to see they’re not playing well (though that wasn’t really the case tonight, despite the score). I really believe if Kari were in net it might have been a 2-1 loss or even a chance to tie at the end since the score still would have been close.

If you're hardly playing in games and get sprinkled in on the second night of a back-to-back
with a defensive system that allows a lot of perimeter shots, it’s asking a lot for your back-up goalie to be sharp when he just isn’t playing enough to give that great performance.
Raycroft
Yea the guy hasn’t been great , but in all 4 games hes been in, the team hasn’t scored more then 2 goals.
3 goals wouldn't have sufficed either except for LA
And I find 3 goals for to be pretty good…

I still can't believe they got one.
42 saves by Lehtonen last game would’ve won most teams a game.

I think the coach has lost the room already
Before muttering a loud “WTF?” to yourself seeing this comment, if you haven’t already go watch the video of coach Gulutzan’s comments after last night’s game.
I have to say, I absolutely love his zeal and his determination, and he seems like an extremely intelligent coach, with the potential to be one of the best in the league (at least tactically, systems, and all of that).
But for a rookie NHL coach to talk about his players like he did, to call them whiney in the media (that’s something you do behind closed doors if at all), no NHL player likes to be called whiney, and especially the whiney ones! These are athletes with huge egos, if a rookie NHL coach who looks like their little brother comes in and starts calling them whiney, and acting like the tough boss, they are going to tune him out. It’s like yelling at a teenager telling him he can’t go out one night, it’s just going to want to make him sneak out even more.
And it’s not just the whiney comment. It’s his demeanor and attitude in that whole press conference. If the team is whiney, if they take too many penalties, he’s absolutely right, that has to change. But if you’re going to mention that in the media at all, you do it something like this. “That has to change, and you know what, we have great people in that locker room, and they understand that. Theyre not bad people or bad leaders, they just get frustrated, and its completely natural. But we’re going to work on that, and with the help of every single person in that room, we are going to change it because thats what its going to take to become a better team. And they know that. We have great leaders in that room, a great locker room, and together we’re going to work through the problems and come out better at the other end.”
That’s how you do it. What he basically did was say, these kids are whiney, and I’m going to ground them and it’s going to change. And that just does not work when you’re a rookie coach. If that’s any indication of how he’s talked in the locker room, and I’m sure it is, I’d guess the players tuned him out a couple games ago, when the bad times started.
I love the coach otherwise, and I’m only basing my opinion on the one press conference and the way the team has played recently, so my opinion here is anything but iron clad. And it’s just that, my opinion, and not even a steadfast one, more of an “I’m starting to believe this is possibility what’s happening without being sure” opinion. But I am definitely wondering if it’s true, just from how great the team looked early, and then all of a sudden falling off a cliff… the talent hasn’t disappeared, the systems haven’t changed… I was starting to wonder what was going on in the room, and then I watched coach’s press conference, and it just didn’t feel like an NHL press conference, there was no restraint, it felt like he was saying things just because he felt them and wanted to vent without considering how his words would affect the team, it almost felt immature in a way. And that was so surprising because he had his team playing such a mature and smart game to start the year.
Anyway just the combination of steep decline in play and seeing how the coach talks to (or about) his players made me wonder if he’s lost the room already. The way he talked strikes me as the way an adult very confident in his job security would talk to junior players, or even minor leaguers, who he knows have to obey him because they’re still trying to make the NHL. But sometimes you can’t talk to the same way to NHL stars.
What do you guys think?
If some of these guys have already tuned him out
then I say it’s time to get rid of those players.
I don’t think that’s happened though. This is a terrific and likeable young coach who has had success at every level. Guys like this don’t grow on trees.
Old habits die hard. I think that’s what he’s talking about. The culture in the room needs to change for the better, and if that means shipping out someone like Morrow, then so be it.
by William Shatner on Nov 20, 2011 5:34 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
I agree
If the players have an ego, maybe they need to be brought down a notch. Humble them. Make them mad. It’s then up to those players to do something positive with being called out. They’re being paid enough.
If players are tuning out or sulking, tough on them. Bench them.
If I tune out at work, I would expect to be fired. They need to respect their salaries and suck it up regardless of what the coach is saying.
Having said this, I do see that some things should maybe be better kept in the locker room. I would just be upset if the Stars started sulking if they’re feelings are hurt by the coach’s comments. At that stage it would be like watching the Dallas Cowboys on ice.
I haven’t actually seen much yet to worry about from the players other than it’s obvious they’re frustrated with themselves right now.
Keep it going team… You played better against the Sharks than in the last few games and hopefully you’ll start getting something going again soon.

Well, that was an interesting game to be at.
Positives: It was nice to see the Stars coming out shooting the puck. They played with a lot more energy and drive than we’ve seen of late, and hit everything that moved. I don’t know that I can think of a game where the two teams combined for as many hits as the Stars had alone. They showed they aren’t going to just roll over and take it.
BUT—as nice as it was to see guys like Barch and Nystrom take one for the team to try to get them, and the crowd, back in it, all hell broke loose from there. They were taking stupid penalties (including some rather iffy calls, but that held true on both sides), and they didn’t react well to them. Just like above I couldn’t think of a game where I saw so many hits, I also can’t think of a game where I saw so many of the Stars players yapping at the refs constantly after calls. That’s got to stop. I’ve seen a lot of it all season, but last night it went above and beyond.
Oh, and after that diving call on Ott, I’m really looking forward to playing the Kings. /sarcasm

Physicality
I agree. I had even made a comment on the game day thread during first period that I was liking the physicality of the Stars and that they were doing so responsibly.
But the second half changed and it all turned rather irresponsible once frustration set in.

40+ shots against per game
Has to stop. The D cannot break down against the forecheck. We need to slow opposition on the entry and stop the panic.
Slow the game down a bit.
I can’t help but feel that the team may have some behind the scenes problems that are manifesting on the ice.

the thing that bothers me most here is no offense
benn is being keyed on and they’re taking him away. the guy that im really having a problem with now is morrow. it seems that as he’s gotten older he’s less and less of a factor if he isn’t scoring. sure once he goes on a streak he’s their william wallace, but if he’s not doing that i don’t really notice him. he’s the captain of the team and its time for him to step it up, he looks disinterested out there and its infuriating me. he needs to go out there and hit someone, drop the gloves, hell take his skate off and try to stab someone with it. i dont care what he has to do, he has to do something other than collect a paycheck. i want ribs and morrow broken up for awhile, how bout ribs with loui and ryder. a line of benn with morrow and ott should be physical and get him going that way. ive never been a raycroft fan, he just seems to blow it everytime out. but with as many shots as the other team is getting its not all on him. i dont understand how this team has lost its head without gogo, sure he does alot for the team, but they look flat out lost. i just dont understand whats going on right now. thank god for netflix…
