Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

A look at Kari Lehtonen's future with the Stars

Kari Lehtonen has been a revelation since GM Joe Nieuwendyk swiped him from the Atlanta Thrashers for Ivan Vishnevsky. At the time of the trade there was no doubt that it was a pretty big risk to put the near future success of this franchise on Lehtonen's back. This was because of, well, his back. From 2005, when he broke into the NHL full time, up until the trade, he had only played one full season. The rest of his career had been plagued by nagging back injuries. He was notorious for being lazy about his conditioning, loving fast food, and trying to play through his back pain when it wasn't smart to do so. Yet Nieuwendyk saw that perhaps a change of scenery and dose of reality might bring out the elite goaltender who was picked second overall in 2002. His 12 game debut with the Stars at the tail end of the Marty Turco era in 2010 was up and down but positive overall; he went 6-4 with a .911 save percentage and 3.06 gaa. While he had some strong outings some concerns were raised about such a big tender getting beat over the shoulder and sometimes being too late in moving post to post on wrap around attempts and such. However last year he silenced the vast majority of doubters with game saving performance after game saving performance and he's started this year off with a bang.

However with No.10 overall 2010 draft pick Jack Campbell coming up in the system as well as the dynamite AHL due of Richard Bachman and Tyler Beskorowany both showing that they are only a couple of years away from the big time, what does the future have in store for the Finnisher (my new nickname for him)?

For me personally I have no idea what management has in store, and I'm not sure if they know yet. However, I do believe that in 2-3 years Jack Campbell will be ready at least for a back up role. After a year of being a back up I think Campbell will take over the starting position. When the happens what do the Stars do with Kari?

I don't think he'll lose the number 1 position because of poor play but more because campbell will be ready. In that case do the Stars keep him as a backup and try to extend him on a more back up goaltender-like contract? If so does he feel enough loyalty to the Stars franchise to accept such an offer? Do the Stars shop him around on the trading block? Do they simply let him walk? Is his contract just a sort of bridge contract for the franchise between the Turco and Campbell era?

I personally love him and what he's done for the Stars in just one full season as the starting goaltender. I would hate to see him just walk with that being the end of that but a lot of the time that's just the way it goes. Business is just business and the NHL certainly is that.

What do you see as the Stars' future with Kari Lehtonen?

Good Post

I was thinking about this scenario last night during the game. I think it’s safe to assume that when Jack is ready he’ll be given a chance to take over as the starter. As far as Kari goes, I have no idea. I believe he he signed through next season (maybe?), so I don’t think we will have to worry about this too soon.

Remember Jack is only 19 and a top 10 overall pick that’s a goalie will take longer to make the step to the NHL than a typical top 10 skater (let’s hope Glennie pans out soon).

I think that...

This is something to think about, after this season.

Next season will be the last year of Kari’s contract and then Joe has some options… If Kari will continue like this, he might want more money and might want that 5-year(?) contract.

But right now, I’m just glad that the Stars are enjoying his play. Many Finns thought that he was done, I was not one of them and now I’m glad I didn’t feel that way.

One thing that will also matter, is what the new owner wants to do with this team. Will Joe still do his thing or will there be other options…

Right now, keep up the good work Kari.

So much can happen in 4-5 for goaltenders.

Honestly Campbell looks great this year, and I hope that continues. I expect that between Richard Bachman and Tyler Beskorowany, one will be packaged in trades following new ownership.

What...just...happened?

Campbell

Campbell’s stock will be higher, the longer he stays out of the pros and the Stars can trade on his potential. Between Jack, Besko and Bachman, I would expect to see Campbell traded first, since Dallas has yet to put much into his development.

I tend to disagree.

The reason Joe drafted him in the first place is that he believes that Campbell is a “franchise” goalie. You don’t trade those away. They haven’t put much into his development simply because he’s very young. His skills are growing every day. Look at his stats so far this season, compared to the beginning of last season.

Bachman and Besko, on the other hand, are both very good goalies. But no one thinks of them as elite. Bachman lacks the size, and Besko hasn’t had his shot as a #1 yet. But they have good value to them, and the system is about to get clogged up after this season. (Especially if Campbell makes the jump to AHL, which he should.) I would look for one of them (or even Raycroft) to be traded. Originally, I was thinking that it would happen during the off season, but no that we are under the cap floor, and Joe has even mentioned trading for increased salary, my guess is that Bachman and Wandell will be part of a package deal at some point before February.

Agreed.

There were many who were mocking M-A Fleury. Now there is just one big silence. If Jack can be something similar, we can wait.

And thats when it’s good to have Kari between the pipes. =)

The way I see it, Campbell is still3 years away at the earliest.

1 more yeah where he is, 1 year in the AHL, 1 year as a back up, and THEN he can start to be the main guy.

Kari’s deal runs through the next 2 seasons, so sign him to another 2 year deal after that. Then that last season, you can have them duke it out for the number 1 spot. Or sign Kari to another 3 year deal, and trade him when the time comes.

Of course, this is all assuming that Kari performs to the high standards we now expect, as well as Campbell developing at a lightning fast pace. Not to mention completely ignoring Bachman and Besko.

No matter how you swing it, right now…. this is a very good problem to have.

Yep.

And if Jack/Besko are a pair one day, nice.

Right now we can just enjoy Kari.

karis contract expires when the current CBA expires

im certain there will be many trades to be made once they rearrange the cba, as well as more cautious contracts being handed out league wide.

while i do think capbell is 2-3 years out of the nhl i think hes 4-5 from a starting position. Joe has stated that he wants competition at every position. joe wants Kari to be amazing and he wants campbell to have be better than that to steal the starting job. Kari is not going to hand it over easy.

Look at LA, people were saying last season that bernier would eclipse quick and become the #1 for the kings. all the talk pushed quick to his best season yet and now have people second guessing bernier.

I think Kari is under contract through this season and next. The CBA expires after this season, doesn't it?

I’m looking forward to the competition. It’s been a while since we had a great goaltender and a great back up at the same time.

The thing is

Bachman is the more proven pro at this point and at a lot of different times he’s carried the baby stars to success. While that does make his trade stock higher than Besko’s it also makes him more valuable for the Stars. I don’t really see Raycroft coming back after this year and maybe he doesn’t even finish the year in Dallas, so I see Bachman as the next backup.

Then again we don’t want another Tobias Stephan on our hands
