Thanks to Taylor_bean, I've realized the usefulness of google docs.  I fiddled around with this a bit, and I figured out how to work it the way I want to (commands are a bit different from excel).

Anyway, for those of you interested in tracking the magic number, here's a quick and dirty sheet that has it all laid out.  Magic number for making the playoffs is on the left, and the magic number for winning the division is on the right. 

And the whole "Destiny in their own hands" thing just means they have enough points in remaining games, that they can capture that spot on their own, without the help of any other teams losing.
