Why I Love Defending Big D

I've always been hungry for as much news and opinion on Dallas Stars hockey as I can find, so when I first stumbled upon Defending Big D about a year ago, I was ecstatic. "MORE STARS STUFF!" I enthusiastically (but silently) exclaimed to myself. I had already known about Mike Heika's blog at DMN and Mark Stepneski at Andrew's Stars Page, but I was clamoring to hear what my fellow fans had to say about them, so DBD was just perfect...

But perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. Some of you may already know a little about me, but let me give a little introduction for the rest of you. My real name is Carson, and I've always been a huge hockey fan. Growing up I always followed the NHL with a watchful eye and was glued to the t.v. every Spring. When a playoff game went to OT, I ALWAYS stayed up until the end, no matter how many threats I received from my parents. I still have a vivid memory of staying up that hot June evening in '99 to watch Brett Hull bring the Stars their first Stanley Cup as a wee 8-year old.

Now through all that time, I never really had a favorite team; I was just a young hockey fan who simply couldn't get enough hockey. That game in '99? That was more me being a hockey fan than a Stars fan. I didn't really become a die hard Stars fan until right after the lockout in '05 - '06. I was getting tired of not being able to watch any hockey until playoff time (my parents wouldn't let me get Center Ice), and I knew FSN showed games from time to time, so one evening in '05 I tuned in to watch Stu Barnes net a hat-trick on Chicago en route to a Stars' win.

And I was a hardcore Stars fan from there on out!

The more I watched the Dallas Stars, the more I fell in love with them. I slowly began craving more and more info and opinion online. Mike Heika and Mark Stepneski have always been phenomenal, but I wanted to be able to share my own opinions on the Stars and talk with fellow fans in the same way people in my neck of the woods talk about the Cowboys, Rangers, and Mavs.

You see, I live about 2 hours east of Dallas, and most people in this area don't know anything about hockey (one day on the school bus, a kid asked me what my favorite sport was. When I told him it was hockey, he said, "Hockey? What's that? That's not a sport!" I thought he was kidding, but he was dead serious). It's always made me feel jealous (and even a little lonely) when I hear groups of people at work or school discuss the other 3 major sports teams in Dallas. I've always longed for some intelligent conversation about my favorite teams that everyone else in the area can have about theirs.

I never bothered commenting on Heika's and Stepneski's blogs. They are both excellent sport's writers, but the commenters over there are always rude and attack anyone with the audacity to disagree with them. I dipped my toes into the waters over at the Stars' Official Message Boards, but that was no bueno either.

And that's where Defending Big D came in. I never thought that I would find a place to talk about Stars Hockey intelligently and respectfully, without fear of being insulted, attacked, or ridiculed in any way. Both Brandon's, Brad, Art, and Pat all provide excellent and well-thought out analysis from a fan's perspective, and the users are the same. I no longer have to keep my Stars to myself; I can finally share them with others. GDTs are a blast, and my fellow users always have interesting and sometimes thought-provoking Fan Posts.

In the Cliff Notes version: Defending Big D is like Heaven for this Stars fan.

So hats-off to all of you at DBD! I look forward to sharing the incredible highs and lowest of lows of being a Stars fan with each and every one of you!
