Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

ESPN Dallas is reporting that the Stars, as suspected, have placed Brandon Segal on waivers and he is the odd man out after the Jamie Langenbrunner acquisition.

Unlike Sutherby, Barch and Petersen, Segal has a two way contract and would make significantly less money in the AHL, saving the Stars some bucks after they took on about $1.4 million in salary for Langenbrunner.

Segal would join Brunnstrom as NHLers now with the Texas Stars should he clear waivers.

I still think they should have looked to trade him for some picks...

but you never know when youu might need to call him up, so either move is a good one. I’ll just be upset if someone claims him and we lose him for nothing.

I'm sure they looked,

but any potential suitors can read the situation just like we can. Why give up anything in return when you can wait a few days and pick him up for nothing on waivers.

my only argument is that waivers aren't a guarantee, since any team ranked below you can also claim them.

but the odds of 2 teams fighting over a 4th line winger is….. not likely.

I doubt he gets claimed...

Lets be honest here, we all like Segal, guy has a tremendous work ethic.. but you can say that about a lot of players in the NHL. It’s not like being a great team guy s that far fetched in hockey.

9 points in 36 games is hardly much for any team to get worked up over.

He’ll be a big boost in C.P.

It's a lot more than he was producing with the Kings, whom we picked him up from on the waiver wire.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember back then what their reasoning was for putting him on waivers? I do remember Joe picking him up because he is a right-handed shot (what is Wathier?).

Wathier is a left handed shot..

Segal’s production I think you can argue between the Kings and Stars was actually better than it was this season.

It’s not so much that the Stars had a lack of right handed shots that was the issue – though it was – but it was the lack of QUALITY right handed shots, especially on the power play.

I don’t think Segal was going to be seeing any PP time in Dallas any time soon. He will hopefully with the T-Stars though..

Thanks, Art.

I like Segal, but a lot of the stuff that he brought to the team at the end of last season seems to have been filled by Burish (battles for pucks along the boards and in front of the net). I hope he will help the T-Stars. They seem to have struggled to stay in playoff contention this year.

The idea of "just a guy" evolving

is a good sign as the team improves and you take a different look at what your third and fourth line can look like. Still, this was probably more about the dollars than anything else.

This time last year, picking up anyone off waivers could have been interpreted as a in improvement. That player is evaluated differently as a part of the team that the STARS are this year.

BJ

I’m just haunted by the loss of BJ Crombeen on waivers. Granted, not an earth shaking loss, but I get wistful every time I see him pummel some poor sap (and annoyed when that sap is a Star).

by tdawg88 on Jan 10, 2011 1:49 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, they really wanted to keep BJ

they got a little fancy with waivers thinking nobody would take him and got burned… then again he would be, at best, a 4th liner in our current line up.

Gotta think they won’t be too upset if somebody claims Segal since it will save a little money. Anyone know what he makes on his two way?

Dang

That’s, what, almost an 80% pay cut? I’d be pretty surly. Then again, I’d love to make anything close to $130,000.

he's also played half the season in the NHL already

so he’ll wind up with close to 300k when it’s all said and done

Well I for one will miss Segal in the room

He was a funny guy and starting to come into his own a little in the room, at least from my point of view.
