Stars Lose Two in SB Nation Mock Expansion Draft

The SB Nation Mock Expansion Draft project has reached it's conclusion, and the newly formed (mock) Winnipeg and Quebec general managers have sorted their way through the massive, steaming trash heap that was 30 unprotected lists to form their franchises.

See the whole draft list here.

Stars defenseman Karlis Skrastins was taken at #35, and Krys Barch was selected second to last at #51.

What may be of particular interest to you is a look through the draft to see what defensemen other teams cast aside might actually be better than some pieces the Stars had in the first place. Would you take Barrett Jackman of the Blues? Colin White of the Devils? Could Roman Hamrlik, old experienced as he might be help this team next season?

Many of you responded to our poll about the defensemen with a desire to keep Trevory Daley and Matt Niskanen, so the real question is what would you do next if this were real? Would you be OK rolling into the season with Robidas, Grossman, Fistric, Daley, Niskanen and Woywitka?

The hypothetical loss of Krys Barch would not be so hard to swallow (for most fans anyway) with Adam Burish and Steve Ott on the team, and others with the Texas Stars (Wathier, Sawada?) that could be called upon to fill 4th line minutes if need be.

Former Dallas Star BJ Crombeen was featured in this draft, and Fabian Brunnstrom, left unprotected, was not. Interesting. Visit the main story stream for the Expansion Draft here.

Robidas, Grossman, Fistric and Daley? Yes. Robidas, for all the talk about his deficiencies as a number one defenseman, is a very solid defenseman who gives his all for the team. Grossman and Fistric are becoming very solid, dependable defenseman that have yet to come into their prime. They will be valued pieces in the future. Daley has real talent, both on defense and offense. I still think his best is yet to come.

Woywitka? Probably. He doesn’t do anything special (good or bad) but he is a steady sixth or seventh man.

Niskanen? Not if I had a choice. If this kid has talent and promise, he needs to show it. He has stunk since late in his first season. He was desperately in need of some AHL development time but it may be too late now. I say let Larson show what he has as Niskanen’s replacement.
