Dallas Stars Rally, Overcome Penalties for 2-1 Win Over Avalanche
It wasn't pretty but in the end it was a good win that left the Stars and the fans with a positive feeling heading into the final preseason game in St. Louis.
A game that was supposed to be a "dress rehearsal" for the Stars turned into a special teams contest and the Stars never seemed to be able to grasp either momentum or a pure offensive attack. Kari Lehtonen kept the Avs off the board, however, until midway through the third period when the Avs took the lead.
It was the Mike Ribeiro-Brenden Morrow-Adam Burish line that ultimately was the difference as the Stars pulled off yet another third period rally. Ribeiro tied the game on the power play and then Adam Burish got the game winner with just under a minute remaining in regulation.
As we wait for Brad's expert, on-site analysis, here are a few quick nuggets from the game:
- Tomas Vincour and Jamie Benn had a very strong game, and Benn and Ott have developed some great chemistry. Vincour likely won't make the team but he's not going to be in the AHL for very long.
- We have finally found a right-hand shot on the wing for Mike Ribeiro. Adam Burish: you now have a job.
- Kari Lehtonen was very impressive once more. I don't know how he looked, but Ralph and Razor were impressed.
- Brad Richards had an uncharacteristically off night.
Update from Brad: Lucky for me, I'm not on a dead line like newspaper writers, and will bring you much more in the morning. It's late. We talked to Coach, Lehtonen, Morrow and Robidas and I'll leave you with a Morrow quote before I work on some stuff for the morning and transcribe 20 minutes worth of audio...
[On the game winner] "I get some ugly ones but that's right up there, that one. It was tipped with the sharp end of the stick on that one."
And I can assure you he was smiling fairly wide when he said this. I love Brenden. More tomorrow.

I couldn't listen tonight
but what was the deal with Richards getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty? I saw that in the box score.
B-Rad has some rebel tendencies. I’m so proud that he brought out his mean streak!
Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

I liked what I saw tonight.
Kari was very impressive. Calm, steady, nothing flashy but seems to have pretty darn good glove.
Brad was definitely out of sync. Wiffed shots, bad passes and two penalties. Including that unsportsmanlike? What the?
Adam Burish was solid. I really liked him with Ribs and Morrow. Let’s keep that one together and see how it goes.
And the Captain was the Captain again. It’s AWESOME to see Morrow back to his old self!

Looked for Otter after the game.
He was not exactly available.
So the burning question of “Hey dude…err..what happened there?” will have to wait until next week.
Bummer...

Sheesh
the damn penalties were killers tonight, but good game in the last period. I’m glad I saw some energy in the building tonight, and I got lucky, I got a puck tonight! It hit some guy in the head but I got it lol.
Yeah it bounced..
off the guy’s head and landed by my best friend’s foot and I got it lol.

The Captain is indeed back!!! That’s the Morrow we’ll need all year long. Conjuring the magic with Ribs again is nice to see again, and with Burish it seems a very solid line. If Benn and Ott have the third line we definitely have sdepth in lines now. “IF” Kari can stay healthy we might be that darkhorse team come playoffs.
Burish as a Top Six Forward
It’s great to see Burish click with Morrow and Ribs, he seems to have something there. I don’t know if his promotion from 4th line scrub with the Blackhawks to Top Six Stud with the Stars indicates the lack of talent on the Stars vs the Blackhawks or is more a credit to Nieuwy’s ablility to spot an underutilized talent. Time will tell.
ha, good point
i’d say a little of both. our top 6 talent aint too shabby and is better than most teams in the NHL. but it’s all about chemistry and if he can provide that with those guys, his abilities suddenly become integral to the line, team.
well will indeed see!
went to the game
i will say several of the penalties on both sides were very, very questionable. i nearly lost count on how many were not quite justified. but it’s still pre-season hockey; the players and play is sluggish, disorganized and so are the referees and calls. no biggie. plus they probably get word from the league office to call it tight early on to help create a better flow when regular season starts.
holding, grabbing, interfering is just getting back up to speed for most of these players!
Kari just kind of looks like a wall. he’s big and doesnt flail around a lot. im really exicted about him. as Heika (or Brad…or someone said) he appears to be pretty steady back there and isnt going to make a ton of mistakes. the last few years with Marty we (I included) always found ways to justify goals against. “well only 2 of the 4 goals were Marty’s fault…they left him out to dry…”. which, dont get me wrong happened a LOT! but still, you want your goalie to bail you out a cpl times.
and with an average blue line again this season, we will continue to say that at times w/ Kari. but i think we will all be happier with our netminding this season, barring injuries. with some of the talent (b-rad, ribs, neal, benn, loui) and top end agitation (morrow, otter, burish, neal again) staying in games better will yield some positive results. last year there was such a malaise when Marty would let a dribbler in.
Captain B was back at it. for once i think the pre season has been nice and some guys like him and Kari can really use it to get off to a good start, which is huge for a young team blanked from the playoffs for 2 seasons now.
Yes
He has quite the “economy of movement” doesn’t he? (Lehtonen)
It’s jarring for Stars fans who are used to watching Marty rely on his athleticism. Hopefully the success (and health) translate to the regular season.
