You were going to have to see it sooner or later, even if you purposefully tried to avoid anything press conference related today.
If someone had told me 5 years ago that Mike Modano will end his career with the Detroit Red Wings, I would have postulated that said person was nuttier than a squirrels cheeks in October. And here we are.

haven’t watched it, the picture is enough to turn my stomach…
not going to feel any better watching the 99 Cup game tonight either…
**Proof SOME rules are meant to be broken**
There's a stink on this whole thing...
And it’s coming from the Red Wings themselves, and the people who still live in Detroit for some reason.
It’s this whole “There, there, Mike. They didn’t want you down there in Dallas, did they? No….They showed you the door, huh? Well….champ….pal…WE want you, Mike. WE love you. They don’t love you.”
‘Red Wings meet Mike Modano at airport’
I mean, come on…he’s a 40 year old coming in to play on your third line. The showboating isn’t for his benefit….it’s for our benefit. It feels like a political party pandering to a constituency, claiming that the other side is heartless or something.
yup
really hoping i like modano after all is said and done with but he really better stay away from these quotes:
“Everybody in the League has been chasing the Detroit Red Wings for years but no one has come close,” Modano said. “I’m just elated. It’s exciting to come home.” -NHL.com
ugh. this is way too painful.
Major Dislike
The color totally does not suite his complexion at all… I don’t think I can bring myself to watch this, the picture really does say a 1,000 words.
Now there's some ammo for the dressing room corkboard.
This makes me want to start the season tomorrow. Morning! I’m tired of all the Modano, Turco hand-wringing. I don’t want to read abut Tom Hicks anymore (thanks for the Cup, though). I want training camp to start and to see a fire lit under all those guys who have been waiting their turn, biting their tongue and biding their time while Modano was here. He’s not the Captain anymore. He’s not here anymore. When he skates out FROM THE CORNER of the ice I can’t wait to see the first, best effort from a young team that is ready to make a statement about who they are. Wether it’s 9 or 35, or 87, or 8 or17… it’s time to see something from 91, 63, 2, 32,10,18 ….
No respect...
going from one hated team to another. Should’ve went to Minnesota, and repaid his debt for bailing out with the team. But he can’t look forward to seeing Tootoo now 6 times this season! ;D
/Ex-Minnesotan, now Tennessean.
Are you kidding me?
Should’ve went to Minnesota, and repaid his debt for bailing out with the team.
I really don’t remember it being Modano’s decision to move the team to Texas!
And, seems to me that had Modano chosen to stay in Minnesota, who the heck was he suppose to play for?
He could’ve went anywhere else…well, I’m just bitter ok? Same with Minnesota not getting the (Mighty) Ducks in the aftermath of the North Stars going down to Brown. Funny thing is there’s no minor teams in MN. No AHL, ECHL, USHL, etc. Weird thing for the “State of Hockey”. I guess the Moose was around for a while before it moved to Manitoba.
Probably why I’m even a stronger Preds fan now; I do not want this area to lose this team, especially when I know some very loyal fans here.
I first saw this picture just now and I’m pretty sure my heart stopped a little. This is really happening, isn’t it?
Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

Its just part of the official Stars retirement plan...
Everyone eventually ends up in Detroit.
Am i disappointed?
The real question is will I cheer for him on opening night.
One of the last Matt Niskanen supporters in Dallas....
Stars fans deserve better than what we heard today.
I’ve been a huge fan of Mike for 22 years. I think that stopped today.
Proud fan of the #1 college hockey team in the nation - Miami University Redhawks - The Brotherhood. RIP Brendan Burke.
It's not so much Mo that I'm disappointed in
It’s his immature wife.
And it might be the impetus of a blog post this weekend.
Defending Big D - Analysis and banter on the Dallas Stars
Dear Buffalo, the goal still counts.

I wouldn't bother with it myself.
Mike Modano understands it’s just a business since he’s been around it for decades. He doesn’t take it personally.
His wife’s only role, though, as it relates to ice hockey, is to love and support Mike. She apparently doesn’t see it as just business — and I think that’s fine; she’s entitled to her opinion.
There’s no point in dragging this out or going after her just because she reacted the same way that probably 10% of our fans did.
If you want material for a blog post, ask which Stars captain is the best we’ve ever had, or something. I thought about it, but I’m not an inspired writer anymore — if I ever was.
Oh, come on.
He’ll never get the chance to play NHL hockey again after this. This is his life’s dream, and he can still play at a high level. If he’s a traitor for not retiring with his team, then so is Ray Bourque.
But, Bourque IS a traitor. :-)
Ray Bourque was surrounded by so much “he deserves a Cup” talk it was nauseating. I don’t begrudge the guy for wanting to win, but it really burst the bubble for me. The fact that he went to Colorado just makes it more annoying – and that they won.
Realistically, so few stay with one team and the first few that come to mind (Yzerman, Sakic) had a chance to win multiple Cups so why leave, anyway? I’d have to stop and think of a “lifer” that never won a Cup.
Hey, he still wants to play, bottom line. The Stars didnt pick him up so let him play where ever. LIke said….most go there to retire anyway. Hull, Hatcher, etc… I was more mad that they did not stay with our team, and I really hate the Red Wings, but…they just wanted to play. I will be cheering for Mike, because I know this sorry team will not be in the playoffs….AGAIN. Oh how rebuilding on a budget SUCKS!!!!!! How Sad.
I don't like it, but
how can he be called a traitor? If he was offered a contract he would have been here. He was politely, but firmly kicked to the curb. So if he feels his playing days aren’t over I don’t begrudge him plying his trade elsewhere. It’s no where near like Hatcher that just went to the highest bidder while he had the C on his chest.
Don’t care about Mandy either. She is 100% behind her man, I don’t see the problem. She is emotional about it, good for her.
I have been amazed in reading the Detroit coverage how genuinely excited they seem from coach, to GM, to owner to the fans about having Mike on their team. A team with that kind of pedigree getting that excited over signing a 40 year old 3rd line center. There seems to be some real love and appreciation for Modano there. They obviously really do view him as a prodigal son coming home. Good for Mike, I am excited for him to have such a positive situation. First positive things I’ve felt about Detroit in well over a decade.
That said I hope we make them choke on their octopi when we play them this year.
Well now.
That photo has snatched away the girders of my world. Fantastic.
This cannot be happening...
Turco is a Blackhawk? Mighty Mo is a REDWING??? Somebody wake me from this nightmare!!! I hate to say it, but I have zero faith in Nieuwendyk’s personnel decisions. From firing Dave Tippet for not making the playoffs due to a rash of injuries, to refusing to draft a much needed position this year after two top d-men fell to us, I just don’t think he’s done anything positive since he took over. And now he lets two of my all-time favorite Stars walk so unceremoniously to a couple of hated rivals.
Godspeed, Turks and Mo. I still love you both. I just hope your teams don’t do well…. but I fear they’ll both do a hell of a lot better than our Stars in the near future. JOE N. SHOULD LEAVE NEXT!!!!!!!!
