Would Bieksa be a good fit for Dallas?

In a recent question sent to outstanding writer Mike Heika, a fan asked Heika if it would be smart to acquire Kevin Bieksa of the Vancouver Canucks. Here is where you can read the entire article.

The Stars need to improve on defense, everyone in Dallas knows that. However, with that $3.75 million contract attached to Bieksa, with only one year remaining on the contract, would it be worth it? Plus, who would you trade?

I have a feeling that some people might throw Matt Niskanen in a trade proposal to Vancouver, but I would still hold on to him just to see if he does get his act together. Stars fans know what he is capable of doing, but the only solid play that he showed was when he was paired with Sergei Zubov. Zubov is gone and ever since he has left, Niskanen has shown to be confused at times.

So, if you were Joe Nieuwendyk, and you did in fact have interest in Bieksa, who would you trade and why?

That's a tough question...

I think Kevin Bieksa probably would be a good fit on the stars as he has quite the mean streak and could also help play the point on the power play, but would he actually be worth trading for right now? He might be able to be had for cheap considering he was injured most of last year and didn’t play up to the level he should be able to play, Vancouver has a wealth of defensemen this year, and he will be a UFA next year, but therein lies the problem. I would definitely not trade any true prospects for him simply because he will be a UFA soon and if he bails to another team then there are even that many more prospects gone that the stars are definitely in need of in the stars rather shallow prospect pool. Plus, with his relatively high salary and the stars financial troubles as of now, there is no way the stars are going to be taking on extra salary, especially without having Neal, Grossman, Niskanen, and perhaps Lehtinen unsigned as of this moment. Unless he is traded for equal dollar value, which the Canucks aren’t looking to do as they are wanting to shed salary since they are currently sitting slightly over the cap.

On paper I think Bieksa coming to the Stars sounds like a good idea, but I really don’t see it happening anytime soon in the current state that both teams are in.

Yes sir

I would love to have him, but yes, how would that help us in the long run?

Bieska does not provide what the Stars need in the quanties or consistency needed. The most I would give up is a late round pick and hope to get lucky with his performance in the second or third pair.
