Report: Modano won't make decision before August 5
The Detroit Free Press has the scoop:
Reached Monday evening, Modano told the Free Press he'll make a decision, "when I start skating again -- see how that feels."
Modano said he plans to hit the ice Aug. 5 and that he won't make a decision before that time. He confirmed his options for continuing his 20-season NHL career are Detroit, San Jose and Minnesota.
The Wings have offered Modano, 40, a one-year contract worth $1.25 million and have a bit of wiggle room to inflate that if needed. The Wings hope the twin lures of playing near his hometown of Westland and between Dan Cleary and Jiri Hudler will pull him to Detroit.
As we touched on yesterday, the Red Wings faithful aren't too happy with the amount of time it's taking for Modano to make his decision. It's hard to blame them, what with Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm still waiting for new contracts. But what's most interesting is that it now appears Modano has completely turned on his "Detroit or retirement" statement, and Minnesota and San Jose look like legitimate options at this point.
So we ask you, Stars fans:

You'll really love this
Does he really expect them all to wait with baited breath while they have other people to sign?
What a prick.
I know. The nerve of him taking his time to make a big decision.

He's had all year to make his decision.
Now he just wants to feel special.
I think he wants to not have to retire mid season like Hull did...
It’s got nothing to do with feeling special. He’s the greatest american player of all time, having the red wings want you for one season is not going to make him feel special compared to that.
But he's not holding a gun to anyone's head (I hope).
The teams are free to sign whoever they like in the mean time. If they decide to wait for him, that’s their choice, not his responsibility.

I will be surprised if he doesn't sign with Detroit.
(And if they really want him, they can wait as long as he wants them to.)
I don't think they have to have him though...
Did they say how long an offer, or his offer, is good for? If he takes too long, they may change their minds
Just my thought...
To me..it sounds like he wants to retire…but is looking for a reason. If he goes out on the ice and doesn’t feel 100%, then there is his reason. If he didn’t have doubts he would have signed already. Anyone who loves playing hockey knows that the first instinct is to jump at the chance to go play no matter how long you have been doing it. (as long as physically possible)
I feel like he decided that it would be better to just retire, but he can’t just come out and say that after all the press of trying to find a team to take him. He needs more of a physical reason now. Plus, extending the time out may make some of the teams go ahead and go the other way so that the problem takes care of itself. At least that is what I think….
This came up on twitter when following the Rangers BR hearing today
daniel kaplan dkaplanSBJ
Galatioto: negotiating with 3 possible buyers for Dallas Stars, proceeds to lenders btwn $140 mln and $150 mln
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Saw that too, just asked Kaplan on Twitter if there was anything more specific....
But I’m assuming this means things are still moving along smoothly with the Stars sale, despite the Rangers chaos. And Galatioto’s comment indicates lenders may not be an issue with the Stars like they were with the Rangers…but it’s still a vague comment.
Galatioto is the broker for the Rangers bankruptcy, btw.
Mike has always had commitment issues
please this is nothing new to Stars fans. If the Red Wings want Mo, they’d better get used to this.
