2010 NHL Free Agency Open Thread

You all know the deal...  Stars have an ownership issue, very little money to spend, probably won't do anything in the first few days of the opening of NHL free agency...  blah de blah...

Still, that won't stop us here at Defending Big D from keeping an eye on things.  If any signings or trades do go down today and they affect the Stars, you can be sure we'll be all over it here!  Feel free to leave your own comments and reactions here as well as the day progresses!

And as the token Canadaian on the DBD staff...  Happy Canada Day!

Those are the names…

Although fair warning, CFL season starts today (You can actually catch Montreal @ Saskatchewan on NFL network in the state) so expect a lot of tweets about three down ball today.

Football...

Fun fact: The CFL is also known as the league where even 8 Canadian teams pass on the idea of signing JaMarcus Russell…

I wish he woulda stuck with the Blue Bombers...

No way can he cover any of the receivers in the CFL… even if he could keep up with them, he’d be gassed by mid 2nd quarter because of the pass happy nature of the league.

It would have been fun to watch!

Also saw some tweets on Biron to NYR.

So I’m assuming Alex Auld is back on the market. I’d love to have him back here in Dallas.

Weird.

At what price though?

They don’t have a million for a backup, presumably.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to teach someone on the roster to be a backup and just stack the pads on scarecrow kind of thing on the bench every night to avoid paying another salary ;)

I can see it now.

Crawford: Fabian, you’re tending goal tonight.

I think everyone needs to stop and realize

That hockey players don’t view other franchises like fans do. To the players Detroit is a class-A franchise where you can have a chance at a long playoff run every single year. It’s hard to think about but it’s the reality.

Seems kind of reasonable that a deal could be done in 18 minutes..

We know what the Pens wanted to sign him for, we know what Gonch wanted from the. All Murray had to do is say, “we’ll give you 500 K more and the years you want..”

Anyone know how much control does Hicks have over what Nieuwendyk does?

I mean…with the Modano being let go thing and the internal budget, is Hicks sitting on his shoulder monitoring it all? With him selling the team in the next few months (hopefully), why is there a restriction?

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 12:06 PM CDT reply actions

Until the deal is done

It’s Tom Hicks’ team and Tom Hicks’ rules. (budget) Unfortunately.

Besides, you can’t exactly go writing big checks out for money that you don’t have yet while potential buyers are essentially looking at you through the store window.

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

That would piss them off

And it’s a good way to get yourself fired when the new owner does show up.

Some of this “navigating through financial difficulty” is Nieuwy interviewing for his own job, or at least trying not to piss the new guy off, whoever he might be.

Sign ONE of the following, as cap friendly as possible:
Anton Volchenkov (2009-10 Cap Hit: $2.5 million)
Dan Hamhuis (2009-10 Cap Hit: $2 million)
Zbynek Michalek (2009-10 Cap Hit: $1.25 million)
Willie Mitchell (2009-10 Cap Hit: $3.5 million)
Kim Johnsson (2009-10 Cap Hit: $4.85 million, but should be way less in a new contract!)

Barch could have walked, and made better money on the open market.

I’m still not happy the Stars kept him for that price, not when they signed Wathier anyways.

I wouldn't get your hopes up

There just isn’t value out there. They’re not going to trade him in a salary dump like deal…they’d only trade him for the end game…a defenseman. It’s a very specific situations that would need to involve a team willing to lose a GOOD player in exchange for a center who makes 5 million.

It’s a very, very, very long shot.

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...

but if other teams signed whats his face for $4 million, and that awful guy for $2.5, and so on and so forth, it makes $5 million start to sound like a bargain for those that are looking.

Is this to be read as a net gain on the salary cap, but accepting a lesser blue line? I don’t think I get it. Love Gonchar, but we would have needed 3-4 extra million even to play. This does seem like the year of penthouse salaries for so-so talent. I am STILL laughing at the NTC and 2.5/yr for Malhotra. i posted lower but

i would love to see benn play the off wing like Kane. would allow him to cross the middle more naturally and on his forehand which he loves to do already.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

albeit

not nearly as well as kane does.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

haha, of course

but i think benn is set to take another step up in his game, which will help the stars offense immensely, especially if he is on a 3rd line with wandell and ott, or something like that

-Eric Nadel on 5/17/10

by Jason Brynsvold on Jul 1, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

agree.

29-23-14 would a dream for me on the third line. but i think the stars are really committed to this whole center thing. it’s a lot for a 20 year old to do.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

ya and petersen can center line 4

sweet third line with ott wandell and benn.

or segal wandell and benn with otter up with morrow and ribs

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

our depth at forward is mighty

i wish we could get Mo back to play D and just rush the puck up like zubov. i think i’m gonna do that for my nhl 11 stars team regardless where he signs haha.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

i don’t even know who i would want anymore.

i really wanted to draft forbort. i’m happy with campbell, but if we could trade ribs to phoenix, reunite him with tippett, get forbort, and like a 3rd rounder, i would do it.

that puts a lot of pressure on benn and wandell, and then makes this year a much greater rebuilding year than it is right now on paper.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

pretty weak trade

but not sure we could get much more; basically trading ribs for a first and a third.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

i mean in theory

shouldn’t we be able to trade a 5 a year ribs for a 5 a year D? but it doesn’t work like that. a great defensemen is valued more. not a lot of teams need centers.

i still like ribeiro on this team. i like the change of pace he brings to the team. we have 2 up tempo lines, a forecheck line, and his, it keeps the other team from becoming comfortable (in theory).

with that said, i really don’t know what you do.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Except..

We wouldn’t see Forbort for about 3 years.

ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.

by Brandon Worley on Jul 1, 2010 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

but at some point this team needs to decide if it’s rebuilding completely or a make-shift of this new ideology that crawford and joe are trying to implement.

and if they are, then ribs doesn’t fit. we all know that.

we know they want to get younger and faster; that’s not ribs.

and they want to get cheaper. so signing someone won’t help. trading won’t help. it’s rely on the young guys now to finish their development are start plucking from the well again; and we have basically no sure thing in our D well. not saying forbort will be a sure thing, but he seems worth the risk to me.

either way, ribs pretty much has to go. and he’s one of my favorite players. maybe not now. maybe not even til july 1, 2011. but we have glennie come up and a roster chalk full of forwards and no one to stop the other guys. we have to start planning more for the future, which i know we did in the draft, but IMO, none of the guys that we drafted are in the caliber of forbort.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

there's an are in there

that was supposed to be an ‘or’

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

There just isn't much incentive for Nieuwendyk to rebuild.

It’ll probably cost him his job, epecially with a new owner coming up.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

and i don't think we necessary are that far off

i mean, the offense is there. and it’s potent. but i don’t know if it’s potent enough to supplement the faults of the defense; not saying anything new, but something has to change for the team to improve.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

ill continue later

go work. here’s to the aforementioned ribs to NYR trade i posted way earlier (for del zotto, giradi or staal, and callahan; i dream big haha)

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

that's why i was asking

i kept trying to put a line combo together and we’ve got a glut at forward in general

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

that isn't too shabby, honestly

especially if wandell can take the next step

"Diving stab by Andrus, gets up, throws.... GOT HIM!!! An unbelievable play! From short left field!"
-Eric Nadel on 5/17/10

by Jason Brynsvold on Jul 1, 2010 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

we’ve got a great set of forwards.

which is why ribeiro is easily expendable.

even ott could center the third line. that’s his natural position anyway isn’t it?

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah but

wandell has way more upside as a center, thats why i think they have to trade or are planning on trading more than one forward

by sundancekid on Jul 1, 2010 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

ya. i forgot about him.

but ya. definitely have to be setting up a trade.

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

agree.

wandell can move. skates like a center should. ott shouldn’t be there.

i really think benn should play the off wing like patrick kane does.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

A little OT: Is Segal under contract for next season?

-Eric Nadel on 5/17/10

by Jason Brynsvold on Jul 1, 2010 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

yeah

for like half the salary. contract up at the end up next year. don’t remember if its UFA or RFA

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually like the Burish signing.

It’s tough to say that at $1 million per season…….but he’s going to add that level of intensity and toughness that was missing last year.

I hope.

ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.

by Brandon Worley on Jul 1, 2010 5:35 PM CDT reply actions

He can choose not to agree to a contract with Dallas, sure.

But the Stars can also match any RFA offer that’s out there.

ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.

by Brandon Worley on Jul 1, 2010 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

well that's what i was saying

if he waits, the stars will end up having to pony up more cash and he’ll get more money.

by Travis Drybread on Jul 1, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe...

See what happened to Chris Mason though? He held off on a big contract, then ended up making half as much in Atlanta.

ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.

by Brandon Worley on Jul 1, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

if he gets offered over 3 a year

and dallas doesn’t match, that team would have to give us a 1st and a 3rd, plus the money to sign him.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly

that’s why, as brandon stated earlier, it’s very very rare for RFAs to go anywhere. it could happen if a team really likes james neal. but that’s a lot to give up.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Burish - Barch

What a terrible deal extending Barch. If you want Burish fine, no reason to have Barch. Joe just wasted about 1/3rd of the available money on a fourth line winger. Genius….

Lifetime stats

If you trust Wikipedia show very similar to Turc’s

by bigtill2002 on Jul 1, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really.

Turco’s had a couple of off years, but he’s never really had as low a save% as Raycroft has had since the lockout.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but

He only got his GAA under 3 in one of the 3 seasons after the lockout. And his save percentage was only over .900 in one of the previous seasons as well but luckily it was the most recent season with Vancouver.

by bigtill2002 on Jul 1, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

i still like it

he played on a really bad colorado team one of those years, and he’s a guy who works very hard.

interesting to see how he’ll do with our D.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No don't get me wrong

I like it on paper as Kari makes me very nervous. A solid back up that can play starter minutes…Tommy likey

by bigtill2002 on Jul 1, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

curious what he's getting paid

but yeah, i agree, better than climie or krahn. i think in need to change my photo now as there is absolutely no chance turco resigns (although there really wasn’t any to begin with).

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm more partial to Save-percentage than GAA.

If only because GAA seems like a statistic more relative to the team than the player. I think Raycroft will be alright as a backup; better than any other apparent options- but .879, .894, .876, .892, and .911 the last five years makes me less confident if we have to rely on him for much more than that. Though I’m hardly a Andrew Raycroft expert.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

it's definitely more important.

i played goalie my entire ice career and cared about two things: shots against and save percentage; wins obviously over both.

i just remember watching raycroft as a rookie in boston beating montreal and thinking this kid would be great. then the lock out happened and he lost a step. i went to the same goalie came he did pre-lock out, and then after his game changed. but in this past season i thought he started to look more like his old form.

he was prone to a lot of mental mistakes post lock out that went away last year. that’s why i think he’ll be more reliable than his stats indicate. kind of like auld was for the most part.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Good to know then.

Looking at his numbers, one does have to wonder what happened to him.

If he ends up like Auld, that’s fine. Auld was a good guy to have as a backup- once the Stars started to try to push him as the starter, he struggled.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

IMO i think raycroft will be better suited to handle the workload auld received.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Theres the back up goalie the Stars needed

by chris1989 on Jul 1, 2010 5:38 PM CDT reply actions

great signing

raycroft can still very much play in this league. VERY GOOD MOVE

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:40 PM CDT reply actions

Ok... Raycroft I'm cool with

Maybe the Stars are going with a 1A / 1B type deal? raycroft can be good for stretches…

But still not sure with Burish.

like agvdstars said, i think its kind of a backup plan if lehtonen gets hurt

since he has proven he can carry the load for extended stretches.

plus can play for extended periods

if kari gets hurt or sucks. FANTASTIC move.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:40 PM CDT reply actions

i still wish

barch’s 850 + burish 1.15 would = some D. any D.

by agvdstars on Jul 1, 2010 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

Raycroft is alright.

Not a bad guy to have fill in occasionally. Let’s just hope we don’t need to rely on him for much more than that- he’s been pretty below-average post-lockout as the main guy. But as a backup, and with our finances- it’s alright.

Don’t get the Burish one though.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

Yea post lockout he had a good year for Toronto, where he started 71 games and almost got them in the playoffs, then after that he has played for terrible teams until this past season when he was on Vancouver. And didn’t he get traded from Boston for Tuukka Rask?

by chris1989 on Jul 1, 2010 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure.

.894 Save percentage, 2.99 GAA: Not really a good year. He was traded for Rask and did win the Calder, yes, but I don’t see how it’s relevant to his value now. He’s a good backup now- nothing more.

by Giant Space Ants on Jul 1, 2010 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

wasting money!

neal and grossman!!!!!!!! or do we have more money? is 26 retiring?

by sundancekid on Jul 1, 2010 5:43 PM CDT reply actions

they have WAY TOO MANY WINGERS NOW

so it has to be more than one player, ribs and sutherby?

by sundancekid on Jul 1, 2010 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

Hey guys...

There’s no rush to sign James Neal and Grossman as humanly early as possible.

people keep acting like they are. A lot of players are RFAs for most of the season before they reach a new deal…

With the signing of Barch and Burish, I gotta think Sutherby is on his way out.

Kinda looked like Crow never really liked Sudsy.

Bah....

I’d much prefer Burish over Barch…..just don’t like that contract for Barch at al.

yup

not sure anyone will disagree on that. at least burish can stop and start. barch has one the slowest i can recall in recent memory.

just an update. they won’t move on studly wonderbomb at his price.
