Star-divide

Why the Stars drafted him:

The Stars traded down a bit, originally having the 71st pick but trading it to Colorado for the 77th and 109th picks in the draft.  Chances are the Stars still got the guy they wanted with 77 and got the bonus of an extra pick.  As for Alex truth be told he's a bit of an unknown as the Stars go to the second teir of junior hockey to find a potential diamond in the rough. A versatile and big forward who can play all three forward positions but is maybe best at left wing.  He is set to join the Brampton Battalion of the OHL next year.

A second opinion:

From HockeysFuture.com:

Played split the season between the Brampton Capitals (OJAHL) and the Orangeville Crushers of the CCHL (Junior A). In 10 games for the Capitals, Guptill netted 6 goals and added 5 assists for 11 points. In 19 games for the Crushers, Guptill scored 13 goals and added 13 assists for 26 points. He registered a +11 rating for the season. In 2 playoff games for the Crushers, Guptill picked up 1 assist and was a -3

Well the reports say he can play on the right.

But really who cares. He is at least 3 and probably 4 yrs from progressing to the nhl. Worrying about how he fits in with the current glut of left shots is pretty meaningless.
