Stars Select: Patrik Nemeth (Round 2, Pick 41)
Patrik Nemith
Team: AIK J18
Born: Feb 8, 1992
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweeden
Height: 6 foot - 3 inches
Weight: 212 pounds
Position: defenseman
Shoots: Left
NHL Central Scouting: 11th among European skaters
Why the Stars drafted him:
Well quite obviously defense is a need for the Stars. Size at the blueline is also a need for the team and Patrik already has decent size for an NHL defenseman. May not be as long term a prospect as some other defensemen picked ahead of him.
Was this a good pick?
Don't be surprised if the Stars go and use their next three picks on this day to stock up on the blue line. Nemeth by all accounts is big and mobile. A nice mix of being able to use a good physical game to clear out his end of the ice, but isn't a total loss when it comes to moving the puck around, though it's certainly not a strong point. Did the Stars just draft Nik Grossman 2.0? We'll soon find out.
A second opinion:
From our friends over at the Copper & Blue:
He's a physical force on the ice who moves well and will likely be a shut-down-type defender and penalty killing expert, yet he's going to last well into the second round because he has zero offensive ability. The closest comps that come to mind are Matt Greene and Jason Smith, prior to his knees totally failing him

Heh..
I don’t think his offensive ability is that bad.

From the stats I was able to get a look at it, it's okay, for a defensive defenseman.
I have no problems with trying to get the next Craig Ludwig, or a similar type of guy — the only thing about this draft choice is that it seems to be in direct opposition to the game style Marc Crawford (and Joe Nieuwendyk) have indicated they want to have…if all your defensemen, four or so years down the line, have a strong defensive bent (like Fistric, Grossman, and this guy), you’re obviously not going to be able to get them too involved in the offensive play.
I'm not familiar with him
But from the reports I’ve read they say he’s a very mobile defenseman, which is odd for a defensive d-man. If he can be a good first-pass type, it would be a solid pick-up. If not, and he just turns out to be a meaner Nik Grossman, at least that projects to be a little better than Fistric.
Yah, but...
Look at what we have…Erikson, Richards, Neal, Benn, etc….if we just have some solid D….We wont need to worry about their Offensive Production. Right? Solid D, Great Goaltending….doesnt that sound kinda like the 90’s team we all know and loved….;)
Grossman 2.0
Hell…I’d love to have another Grossman! Is turning into a very solid D-Man. Really like his play this year and if we can get another just like him…..GREAT
