2010 Draft Day Open Thread: Day 2
Alright folks, here we go with what my on-screen program guide tells me will be 12 continuous hours of NHL draft coverage! (Good grief I hope rounds 2 to 7 really don't take 12 hours...)
When last we left you last night the Dallas Stars had used their 11th pick overall to draft goalie Jack Campbell. It was the first of 11 American born players taken in last night's first round - an NHL record. The Stars have (at the moment baring any trades) three more picks: In the second round they pick number 41, the third round they have the 71st pick and then in the fifth round they are at pick 131.
Now while Campbell was certainly a surprise for Stars fans, he only was a surprise based on the handful of surprises that we had between picks 5 and 10. (Dylan McIlrath at #10? Really New York Rangers?!) In fact some players who many thought to be sure picks in the first round will be back at Staples today hoping they don't have to wait too much longer to have their name called. If you're interested in seeing how this second round could go, you can always check out SB Nation's round 2 mock draft.
Now feel free to mix and mingle here, discuss the other team's picks and what - if any - moves the Stars make. Throughout the day here at Defending Big D we'll have immediate profiles of any picks the Stars make, and be looking for your opinions on them. Any other moves made will also be broken down here!
Enjoy the day, and game draft on!!

hopefully history repeats itself
and the best defenseman available falls to the Stars… I know Nieuwy wants more picks but if Johnathan Merrill is somehow available at 41, he’s got to take him….. right?

he has to take top five talent at 11. I’m a bit of a grey cloud this morning lol

I would be surprised if Pickard gets to 41
But what about this draft isn’t surprising so far?
Besides, the scouting team didn’t necessarily like Pickard, they liked Campbell. Loved him, actually.
Yeah I'm not sold on Calvin..
Seen him a few times this past year with Seattle.. He never really stood out to me that much.

as a GM
Dont you have to be able to think on your feet and weigh your options more heavily? I mean we were on the clock for two total minutes so he wasnt even considering the two Dmen. I mean I like the pick and I expect him to work out, but you should still take a look at every angle instead of being caught off guard.

I don't think it was a case of being caught off guard..
I have always believed you should go with your first instinct / pick and that’s what the Stars had here. As Brad said in his recap last night, before the draft if you told all of us that the Stars would draft Campbell, most of us would be just fine.
It wasn’t just Dallas that passed on Fowler and Gormley.. So if it’s a mistake to pass on them, then at least Dallas isn’t alone in making it.

Speaking of Pickard...
How did Visentin get picked ahead of him?
This draft was all kinds of head scratching really.

lol not a big deal.
I wondered… I made the thread really late last night and this morning I was still waking up when I saw my Twitter feed say it was posted.. I was like “Huh… I really don’t know how to set posting times on that thing..” lol

Something else to look for..
In case you missed it, the Flyers traded the right to Dan Hamhuis to the Pens last night… So I imagine that’s Gonchar’s cue to head for the exit door in Pittsburgh.
Just throwing it out there… Is Sergei Gonchar someone Stars fans would want to see in Dallas?

ouch for the Flyers
Gave away Parent for a 3rd rounder, basically. Nashville didn’t get enough credit for swinging that deal.

Talking to some Oiler fans this morning..
it seems to be a three way tie as to who they want.
Pickard, Pitlick or McFarland.
I think they go McFarland.

Nemeth is a solid pick at #41. He's big and he's a skilled puckmover.

trying to follow it is frustrating..
The Stars picks though are pretty solid.. love the latest one of Theriau.. He’s a kid that loves to hit and isn’t afraid to muck it up.
