Stars Three Goal Third Pushes Them to Calder Cup Finals
The Texas Stars, in their first season, are headed to the Calder Cup Finals against the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals). The oldest team in the AHL against one of the newest; it's a battle for ages. To get there, Texas had to get past Hamiton tonight.
The Stars were not looking good early in the game. Texas was down 2-0 at the halfway point of the second period and trailed in shots 28-5. Then, everything turned around. Ethan Graham, Perttu Lindgren, Mathieu Beaudoin, and Jamie Benn each scored to tack on 4 unanswered goal in the late second and into the third. Benn's tallied sealed it with 90 seconds left in the game, and Curtis Sanford still in net. Your final score was a triumphant 4-2.
Right now, I don't really have words to describe the elation in Central Texas. I hope those of you who listened or watched the game online enjoyed Texas Stars play-by-play man, Josh Fisher. There were a lot of great comments about him on Twitter.
Hershey had the most points in the AHL this season, so they will have home ice advantage for the Finals. Texas starts their series there for the Cup on June 3rd. Full game recap on Hundred Degree Hockey. Pictures and post game quotes sure to follow once Josh Fisher catches his breath. What a game!

Outstanding.
This is why you play all three periods. They were dominated for stretches but found a way in the end.
This is so cool, especially for you, Stephen.

Can't believe
I’m going to cover AHL Calder Cup playoffs with a press pass…

FINALS, man. In the first year, too!
Enjoy it, sir!

I am now currently wrestling with my schedule and how I can get down there
Unfortunately it looks like game 5 or nothing for me.
I shudder to think how close to the “end” that might be.
What a turn around third period!
Wish I could have made it to CPC for the watch party. I bet the place was ROCKIN’! At least I got to watch it online at the house with some friends that are fans, and I can’t wait for the Cup Finals to start. A whole week!?!? I’ll have withdrawals by then. Anyone know if Krahn will be back, or does Texas stick with Climie at this point? His last two games have been awesome.
On a side note, does anyone know the rules for players being assigned to AHL teams during the playoffs, like Benn, Subban, Chelios, etc. Is it strictly players with 2-way contracts and NHL rookie status? Chelios, of course, is no rookie and I know Subban played most of the season with Hamilton, but Benn played the whole season with Dallas, So what governs which players can go back to their AHL clubs for the playoffs? And please don’t read that as I’m griping about Benn being down here for the playoffs. Having season tickets to Texas, I would have loved watching him play here all season.
Players with 2 way contracts can be sent down for sure. Also, players who have under a certain number games in the NHL (Subban, Benn) can be sent down without incurring penalties (having to pass through waivers) as well.

Do you know where the exact rule is about this?
I was looking for the AHL rule book/bylaws and couldn’t find it.
Granted, I didn’t look very hard…

Didn't research much myself.
I got the question during the game tonight, starting to answer, then thought about it and said, “Did we just score? Quit distracting me.”

I was going to try to reply to it and explain it, but then thought I'll let Stephen take this one :P
He is much wiser in the ways of AHL rules than I am.

I don't know the number.
But I remember some talk of it on here, with rgard to Matt Niskanen. There was a lot of hubbub because he had surpassed the number of games that you could play in the NHL without invoking waivers on being sent down.
Here’s a good explanation of waivers, 2-way contracts, etc from Pension Plan Puppets.

Great article about it here

With Benn, because he signed his entry-level contract in July of 2008, when he was 18, is exempt from waivers for 5 years or once he has played 160 NHL games, whichever comes first
Clear Day rosters
IIRC AHL teams have to submit a Clear Day roster which dictates what players are eligible to play in the post season…we had Benn on Texas’ Clear Day roster knowing we weren’t going anywhere.
I’m sooooo proud of our Stars!! What an incredible debut season!! AND IT’S NOT OVER YET!!!!
**Proof SOME rules are meant to be broken**
Clear Day rule info
Each Clear Day roster consists of a maximum of 22 players. According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2009-10 AHL regular season and in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.
Teams may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts, only after their respective junior or college seasons are complete.
**Proof SOME rules are meant to be broken**
2-way contract actually just denotes that a player will get paid different amounts in the AHL/NHL. 1-way means the same amount.
As others pointed out, the determining factors are age/games played. I think in your first four years under your first contract you can get sent up/down without passing through waivers.
As for the roster deal, yeah, there was that “Clear Day.” If and only if you were on an AHL roster then, you are eligible to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Should be an exciting series.

Yay for Calder Cup Finals!
Boo for all 3 home games being on weekdays. Is it me, or has Texas really gotten screwed on that front?
Not exactly
We’ve had a few Saturday games.
Blogging about the Texas Stars at HundredDegreeHockey.com
Oh I don't know
They’ve had a pretty good share of weekend games, I thought. Part of it is just home ice, and they only had it for one round.
What’s shocking to me is how long they’ll wait to start the finals
Really wishing I could skip school and roadtrip down to Austin.
But I’ve missed too many days already because I was…er, sick ;) helluva game tonight.

And NHL Network still won't get involved with this, right?
I thought maybe they were going to broadcast a couple of these Finals games, but there’s zero indication of that.
What about
FSSW? That would be so cool to see the games on FOX Sports. No offense, but there are 162 Rangers games. You only get (minimum) 4 Calder Cup Finals game, and that doesn’t come around every year!
Blogging about the Texas Stars at HundredDegreeHockey.com
Exactly
FSSW televised 6 games this season between the Tx teams, so why not get something worked out for the finals? But I’m sure the AHL has a lock on the rights and they’ll make us pay to watch online. What is it $40 for the series?

So they broadcast the memorial cup in the US, but not the AHL finals?
Baffling.
by Pat Iversen on May 26, 2010 10:45 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, well...
I think NHL Network is a Canadian run entity, is it not?
The Canadian juniors/memorial cup is a bigger deal north of the border and they broadcast that in Canada anyway (don’t quote me on any of this…) so it gets slapped on NHL Network USA, I think is why.
The AHL…well, that’s different.
by Brad Gardner on May 26, 2010 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions
True, but...
You’d think they’d market to their audience. Besides, what else are they going to show now that the SCF are on? Ah well. Hopefully FSW will pick up a few and kick the Rangers to TXN.

Hmm. I know that occasionally on weekends they broadcast one or two AHL games (normally afternoon).
The AHL’s equivalent to Gamecenter is pretty cheap.

Just saw they're televising games in Hershey.
An ABC affiliate picked up the 3 games at CPC to televise in PA. Wish I thought FSSW or some local channel would televise the games in Hershey, but I guess it costs too much to get the finals down here, or they’re worried about building a fan base for hockey in football country. They are having watch parties at CPC, and there’s always radio so at least we’re not blacked out from the games. But it’s nice to sit at the house and catch a game sometimes, especially since the beer in my fridge is cheaper. Oh well, maybe one day.
Good luck!!
I can’t make it down for this round, but I didn’t make a game for the 1st round either and that turned out pretty damn good ;-)
**Proof SOME rules are meant to be broken**
Is it getting late?
I was just thinking of what it would be like if Josh and Razor called the finals.
It's also worth noting
That they finally drew a decent sized AHL crowd up there (5k+) only to seem them lose ;)
Congratulations guys
I’m looking forward to a good series. I enjoy seeing Hamilton eliminated (though some revenge wouldn’t be the worst thing) and I really love the enthusiasm this series has gotten in TX. The match up I’m particularly interested in is John Carlson and Karl Alzner against Jamie Benn. Benn is obviously an established NHL player and Carlson/Alzner showed late this year that they can definitely play in the NHL as well. Should be a good series.
I waited all year for this?
It's Cost
Basketball does the same thing at the NBA level.
When teams have to fly commercial and ride buses instead of private planes like in the NHL, it would make for a lot more travel than necessary. The general rule is any series with a distance of >300 miles is a 2-3-2. For example, if Texas played San Antonio or Houston in the playoffs, the series would be a 2-2-1-1-1. Look at the Chicago-Milwaukee first round series for an example of this.

Giant Center
Will be at Game 2 at the Giant Center. I hope they have a better fate than the last game I went to (Game 2 in Chicago). Go Stars!
