Update: Kari Lehtonen Signs 3 Year Extension

Update: The deal is done. The two have come to terms on a 3 year, $10.65 million dollar extension worth $3.55 per year. This puts him under contract through the 2012-2013 season.

It was previously suggested (by this blog and others) that the Stars might try a one-year "tryout" or "bridge" deal with Kari because of his injury history and lack of play the last several seasons. Now it seems that the Stars are more comfortable with a few years, perhaps quelled by his strong play down the stretch.

In his last 9 starts this season, Lehtonen won 6, allowing 2.4 goals per game with a save percentage of .926%. The quesiton of his potential and talent aside, the biggest issue moving forward becomes his health. The oft-injured Finn has faced question about his work ethic and conditioning since arriving in the NHL. Recent back surgeries have been said to solve the particular problem that had plagued him for the last several seasons, but moving from the durable Marty Turco to Lehtonen is still seen as somewhat of a gamble.

The backup netminder will be of critical importance this summer. AHL goaltenders Brent Krahn and Matt Climie are candidates, but are also in need of new contracts.

Said Gm Joe this afternoon, "We were excited to acquire Kari Lehtonen in February because of his size, skill and potential to once again be a top-tier goaltender in this league," Nieuwendyk said. "His play during the last month of the season reaffirmed our belief that he can be our starter for next year and seasons to come. We’re very happy to agree to terms with Kari on this contract extension."

Frisco, Tex. – Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the hockey club and goaltender Kari Lehtonen have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension worth $10.65 million ($3.55 million per year average). This extension will put Lehtonen under contract through the 2012-13 season.

“We were excited to acquire Kari Lehtonen in February because of his size, skill and potential to once again be a top-tier goaltender in this league,” Nieuwendyk said. “His play during the last month of the season reaffirmed our belief that he can be our starter for next year and seasons to come. We’re very happy to agree to terms with Kari on this contract extension.”

Lehtonen, 26, posted a 6-3-0 record with a 2.44 GAA and a .926 save percentage over his last nine games for the Stars this season. He played in 12 total games with Dallas, going 6-4-0 with a 2.81 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 2009-10 for Dallas. The 6-4, 215-pound goaltender’s best season came in 2006-07 when he led the Thrashers to their first Southeast division title. He went 34-24-9 including four shutouts with a 2.79 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Lehtonen was acquired via trade with the Atlanta Thrashers on February 9, 2010 in exchange for Ivan Vishnevskiy and Dallas’ fourth round draft choice in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The native of Helsinki, Finland, has played in 216 career NHL games, posting a 100-87-17 record with a 2.87 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He was drafted second overall by Atlanta in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

It's so strange...

To hear Norm Hitzges stop down a segment to talk about the Stars, even if it’s just for a second.

I thought for sure there would be more "too long" votes.

I’m not all that sure about it myself. Although, as long as the core of the defense remains intact (and it probably will), it’s probably a moot point. The poor guy’s going to be fighting for his life back there.

That was the whole reason i voted "just right"

We probably wont be making any improvements on defense this year, based on the extensions we’re seeing right now. It’ll be another year or so before we can get to those, because of that dadgum self imposed cap. But when we DO get rid of that cap and suddenly have $15 million more a year to spend, can you imagine who all we can pick up? At least 2 huge D-men, plus whatever else we need.

by Tsudbury on May 11, 2010 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, we'll have to see about that.

With the way that Joe has backloaded every single deal he’s made so far, they probably won’t have quite the “flood gate opening” that people might expect, but still, if the ownership change can happen things will get better.

It will be pretty interesting to see if this deal is backloaded as well. If it is, he could be making in excess of 4 or 4.5 the last year of it. Then we’ll see what people think.

by Brad Gardner on May 11, 2010 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

That may work for the Stars payroll...

but it doesn’t count against the NHL cap like that, right? So, I imagine if we get an owner who really cares about putting a winning team out there, he’ll she’ll out the money. Plus, there’s always the option of backloading contracts that the new owner signs. It would take 10 years or so, but the new owner could level it back out without having to tighten up the budget in 2-3.

Either that or just take a big hit to the wallet in 3 years, and rely on a deep run in the playoffs to pay it off.

ummm... which one of you guys stuck an apostrophe in the middle of my word?

Cuz it wasn’t me. I would never spell “shell” as “she’ll”

I'd be ok with it...

Kari showed enough in the final stretch of games to prove to me he can still stop puck, and if he’s committed to improving himself on the summer, then I think the Stars should show a commitment to him.

It is a big question..

But with an improved off-season conditioning program, why not?

The thing is though, is that he's never really been committed to conditioning in the past.

Yes, he did have a good month, but that a whole season does not make. He still has a ways to go to prove to me that he’s worth a multi-year deal.

by TracyJean on May 11, 2010 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

But on the other hand, he had a good year or so to sit on the sidelines and decide what he's going to do with his life.

And he’s older. People change. I think he deserves a chance to prove himself, and a multi-year deal shows that the Stars are willing to give him that chance.

by Sugaa on May 11, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

He's had quite a bit of his time in the NHL on the sidelines.

What makes anyone think this is going to be any better than the last 7 seasons?

by TracyJean on May 11, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Because all I've heard from Heika and the organization is that he's motivated.

I trust them, and why wouldn’t he be? He goes from a dire situation in Atlanta to a team with a solid core and a great future, only two seasons removed from a Conference Final run. He has every right to be motivated, and he impressed me in what I saw of him this season.

Things can be different because the situation he’s now in should give him every reason to be motivated.

Just out of curiosity

Has anyone heard anything about how Zubov did this year? Last I heard he was upset that he wasn’t chosen for the olympics, but that was it.

by Tsudbury on May 11, 2010 1:11 PM CDT reply actions

i can't help but think

we would’ve made the playoffs if we had kept him around.

by Tsudbury on May 11, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

He would have helped solidify the blue line

And I have no doubts the Stars would have seriously considered signing him this season…

…if they knew he was going to be this healthy.
