Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Sheldon Souray

So, Sheldon Souray of the Oil has asked for a trade, basically burned all bridges up in Oil land according to SBN sister site, Copper & Blue.

Anyway, he's due 4.5m for 10-11 and 11-12 and I doubt the Stars would be able to find a better defenseman.  The money works because I think that they trade Riberio for something so they stay within their ~45m budget.  I also don't think he'll cost anything significant in terms of prospects.  Maybe you can get them to take Brunstrom in a swap of disappointing players or something along those lines.

Upgrading the d corp is the first, second and third priorities of the offseason.  Souray seems like he could be someone who could help.

I woudn't mind Souray.

The only thing that worries me is age….he’ll be 34 next year, right? If at all possible, I’d like someone younger…but the Stars really have no room to nitpick.

Ribs would almost have to go to Edmonton in that trade, and I could see a Brunnstrom or Niskanen mixed in as well.

Management in Edmonton isn’t the brightest bunch, so you could pull a fast one on them I think.

Souray's been looking for awhile

He’s been trying to get out of Edmonton all year. He even stated he wants to go to a Pacific division team specifically since his daughters live in California (from what I remember). We aren’t exactly in Cali but we spend enough time out there that I think this could work. He’s a big body, has a wicked slap shot, and can run a power play.

As I recall, when there was talk of trading him during the season, he gave the Oilers a list of teams he was willing to waive his NTC for and Dallas was one of them.

If he’s past his injury problems, I could see him as a good, solid, veteran presence on the blue line. Is he capable of being a mentor and keeping some of our youngsters in line?

Yesterday, I was watching gm 6 of the WCSF from two years ago and at the end of a period, Trevor Daley was in front of the our net, Marty had gone down to the ice and then lost sight of the puck. Trevor took a penalty rather than let the Sharks put the puck in the net (if they’d gotten a hold of it, it would have taken a miracle for Marty to make a save). Quite a difference from the guy who kept putting pucks into our net this year. We need someone to remind these guys (or teach them, in the case of those who weren’t here two years ago) that that is how you play the game. If Souray can be that guy, go for it.

Based on his injury issue

Would you like a previously loved Kaberle?

Age, and...

isn’t he injured a lot? I’d rather the Stars sign someone younger and more durable.

I agree

I’d rather get someone younger and more durable, but you’ve got to play the hand you’re dealt and teams aren’t in the business of trading good, young, durable d-men. They are in the business of trading old, costly, unhappy yet servicable defensemen.

If Ribs is gone......

In a deal for Souray…no thanks. That to me boils down to plugging a sinking ship with your finger. You might patch the back end issues slightly but it just opens up much bigger holes in the long term. I have almost always agreed with the saying whoever gets the better player in a trade wins the trade……

Hell no!!!!

Old, expensive and not durable at all. Kaberle may have been injured recently, but he’s put up far more impressive numbers consistently over his career, so I’d rather go for him.

If I’m Nieuwendyk, I’d be looking to sign Volchenkov and then I’d try to acquire someone like a Brent Burns or a Ryan Parent. Both are young, good on the point, have tonnes of potential and can play a good 2-way game. I’d also try to draft Gormley.

We have the pieces to acquire a top defensive prospect. Both Benn and Wandell have shown that they can play center, and perhaps one of them could be the number 2, making Ribeiro expendable. Morrow may be the captain, but the Stars have a different face for their franchise and his name is Brad Richards. Morrow is 31, if I’m not mistaken, so he’s at his prime. But with a history of injuries, given his style of gritty play, how long before he’ll go the way of Ryan Smyth, a player just a few years his senior? I think Neal is better, and we’re pretty solid with lefties, so Morrow would be a name that I wouldn’t hesitate dangling around in trade talks. Fabian Brunnstrom hasn’t played too well so far, but he’s also been given lousy minutes for most of the season, and is usually delegated to the depth checking lines. Not amazing for an offensive-type player. I’d qualify him and then see what he can do on a top 6 line. Maybe if all else fails, we could move one of our prospects (Vincour or Lindgren anyone?) and maybe a defenseman and try to acquire another right hand shot winger, like a Versteeg. Personally, I think we could also benefit from standing pat there, and making room for a guy like Chiasson or Glennie to step in. I think both have great potential.

Trading is a difficult game. Sometimes we have to give up something, to get something and you can’t get quality without giving some away. Morrow and Ribeiro may be endeared by the Stars faithful, but we have to make necessary changes in order to be successful.

And on a side note: Was I the only one angry and confused with the re-qualification/extension of Petersen and Ott? Sure, they’re decent at what they do. But Petersen takes away opportunities from a younger player like a Sceviour and I kind of thought Ott’s asking price was too steep by Dallas’ standards. Then suddenly they extend his contract and give him a nice raise. He’s ok and all, but why pay him like a top 6 and then play him on the bottom 6? It doesn’t make sense to me.
