No Fooling Around, the Stars Re-sign Wandell to Two Year Extension

What's next?

Hicks announces he has a buyer?

No, if that bit of news came down, we really would think the Stars were trying to play an April Fools joke on all of us.

Anyway, the Stars have been busy today having already recalled Matt Climie over Brent Krahn. And just a few moments ago, they announced that versatile center Tom Wandell has been re-signed to a two year extension worth $1.5 million. He was due to become an RFA this summer.

From the Stars press release:

"Tom Wandell is a good, young two-way player that has the potential to play various roles on our roster," said Nieuwendyk. "He is part of our young core that will be the future of the Dallas Stars. We were impressed with his development over the past few years in our system and we are now looking at him to become an integral part of our success in Dallas."

He'll get a bump in pay from the $560,000 he was making this season to $700,000 next season and $850,000 the following season. It's safe to say that judging by the minutes that Crow was giving him in late game situations, the club had already considered him an integral part to this team's core.

And his absence, especially on the defensive end, has been felt ever since he tore an ACL in Vancouver on January 21st.

These are exactly the kinds of contracts they need just to survive with barely any money, and I like the players to boot. So…good job, Joe?

just gotta lock up grossman and neal

then he’ll have my full backing going forward. but excellent contract. i think wandell has the most potential of all the young guys to be honest.

Kudos

Just the kind of good news we need around here. Great signing by GM Joe and at a great price. I am hoping Wandell can be the new Jere.

I like this signing. Not unexpected, but a good number for a young center who shows a lot of promise.

I like this better than the other news out of Stars land today.

Agree with agvdstars – Neal and Grossman are next. Neal should be interesting – we know what he can do, but he’s really fallen off his pace from earlier in the year. What is it going to take to sign him?

yeah

i honestly don’t think neal has earned himself more than 2.5-3 million a year to honest. i would love for him to get an Ott-like extension of 4 years, 12 million. not more though.

Great deal.

And I’m happy I was right about Climie and Krahn :)

"It would've been a huge momentum boost if we had beaten the St. Mary's School for the Blessed, Blind, Deaf and Dumb."

Hockey nut since the night of 5/2/08. What a night it was.

Yeah, you were huh?

Well, we’ll see how much he plays.

I am still stubbornly holding out for Marty for the last home game.

if marty doesn't get the last game

i will lose a lot of respect for Joe, the coaching staff, and the organization.

Would have loved to see more than 2 years

but that’s probably what they needed to do to get him at that price. Too bad they are broke and couldn’t have given him a few hundred k more a year and gotten 4 years total. He will be a UFA at what … 25?

I love this a lot. Wandell has a lot of potential. I can see him being a Lehtinen-type forward in the future.

Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.
