Not sure how much stock any of you put into newer stats, but in terms of GVT (basically VORP…value over replacement player in baseball terms)…i present the Stars D.

Daley’s strong charge lately (how, I don’t know) is the only thing keeping the Stars from being 4 defenders short of completely useless.
So…scratch Niskanen please.
It's very complicated.
They attempt to break down player contributions into Offensive (Goalie), Defense, and Shootout contributions.
It stems from the efforts made to fix the problems with +/-. The main problem is on the defensive side, so a player like Nik Grossman isn’t accounted for properly more than likely.
Tom Awad, the creator, wrote a series of 3 article describing the methodology that went into it plus how it is figured. I’m looking for it now.

It describes several things hockey fans intuitively believe. Most importantly the value of a good goalie. Marty Turco was a minus last year, for the record.
I've seen it used by ESPN Insiders.....I haven't bought into it yet.
Then again, I’m not big on the more complicated stats just yet. Give me the basics, and I’m happy. At least in hockey.
Baseball….now that’s another matter. Don’t try to tell me that RBIs are an essential stat in evaluating the value of a player, and god forbid you try to convince me wins are important.

I like how my reply didn't get added.
I said the article won’t magically push you there. It’s just the first attempt. Defense is still too hard to quantify. It’s better than +/- though. I know a few teams use these too…several deals fell apart over the #s. Unfortunately the Stars, as far as I can tell, don’t subscribe.
Well, even if it won't convince me right away, i'm always open to an alternative to +/-
I’ll take a look over it later tonight after the game. Baseball has turned me into a stats junkie, so stuff like this excites me.

I know some don't like this idea but,
I like Grossman and Fistric together and then pair Robidas and Skrastins. That leaves Woywitka and Daley/Niskanen as the 3rd pairing.

Does tonight prove (so far) that Niskanen has made Skrastins look worse
than he really is? He looks pretty good tonight.
Their 19 in the 1st was a season-high for them (49 is their season-high in one game).
I would say more about how many of those shots have been stopped, but don’t want to jinx anything.
I like getting to see Fistric in front of the net again.
Still can’t figure why he was scratched last game unless his knee needed it.

They've had 42 shots on goal and we're only down 2-0. This probably a good thing.
I think it’s safe to say someone is going to exceed his season high for saves in this game.
The Capitals are EASILY the greatest team in the history of hockey.
And Alex Ovechkin is SO, SO much better than Wayne Gretzky, it’s not even funny. And that Varlamov kid is the best goaltender since Patrick Roy.

I wish you could buy center ice for just 1 team and they would charge less than $50 a month
But if it's your local team you want to see, they will be blacked out.
If you don’t live in the Dallas area, then it’s all cool.
Ours was pretty mild so hopefully, it will pass by quickly.
Patty has Direct TV and is missing this one as well. It could be worse. We spent the weekend with no tv whatsoever and only dial-up internet. DIAL-UP. Gah. I’m still recovering.
