No one is holding Marty blameless. Consensus is that the third goal was all on him. Second is questionable, although it started with blown defense. First goal was on the defense.

How about you stop blaming Marty for the work (or lack thereof) of the entire TEAM?

Ok. I just don't get it.

Why do you people watch the Stars and comment here If you hate them so much?

Turco is here until the summer. Get over it.

The Defense is not good enough and will not be getting any help until maybe the summer. Get over it.

GM Joe is doing the best he can with what he is given to work with. He isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Get over it.

This used to be a fun place to hang out and watch the games, even when losing. But now it’s nothing but complain, whine and complain some more.

This is the team we have for now. GET OVER IT.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

how did joe screw it up?

he basically had HALF an offseason.

give him another season before you throw him under the bus

by johnnywaitt on Mar 4, 2010 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Well

Didn’t upgrade the G position when given the opportunity.
Poor decision on firing Tipp and hiring Crawford.
Didn’t upgrade the D in the offseason when everyone in the world knew it was a problem.
Gave a bad extension to an average player (Ott) handcuffing the team even more financially.
When faced with the fact that his team is not that good, he did nothing to upgrade it or to move pieces for assets.
In fact, I can’t think of much good he’s done.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

-He signed Lethonen. I consider that a possible upgrade (we wont know until after a couple of weeks)
-I agree on Tippet but I believe he thinks if he is gonna lose he is gonna lose with the crew he chooses not the crew he inherits.
-Agree with not upgrading the D but he does not really have any wiggle room with salary.
-Would you rather lose Ott and lose the heart of the team? Have you watched this team play when Ott is injured?

by johnnywaitt on Mar 4, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Ummm

I don’t consider an injury prone goalie who costs $3m an upgrade.
I would rather lose Ott than have to lose either Neal or Grossman because their new salaries won’t fit under the budget and I’d rather lose Ott and have more cash to sign a defenseman in the offseason. You say that it wasn’t Joe’s fault that he couldn’t upgrade the D because of the budget and then he signs a player to a contract he doesn’t deserve, hurting the ability to get D help.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Ummm

Ummm, he’s had a full season of move possibilities. He’s had the summer, a draft and a trade dealine to deal with and he failed in helping this team.

It does when everyone and their mother knows the weaknesses and the GM does nothing.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Well...

I don’t think there was that big an opportunity to really upgrade the goaltending position. Did you see any big name goalies moved yesterday? NO? So when the Stars would try and get one, the price would be MONSTROUSLY high.

And Joe has a low number of draft picks next year, and he’s trying to rebuild long term. He needed to get draft picks, not give up young prospects and future draft picks.

Same thing with goaltending. Kaberle? Not moving. Souray? Out for season. Visnovsky? Could be had, but apparently Stars didn’t have enough.

by Brandon Worley on Mar 4, 2010 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

Ok

Ok, I would have preferred to roll with Turco and Auld then waste money and an assett on getting Lethonen. With Lethonen you gave up a young player for an injury prone expensive player who you don’t know can be your starting goalie next season even though you are now committed to him.

I have no problem giving up players for more picks, not young players. In fact, I think I’m the won who advocated giving up Turco for any pick and was shouted down.

I’m also talking about during the past offseason. He knew the defense was a problem and signed Woywika and Skrastins. Talk about inspiring.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

With what money did he have to spend on a defenseman?

Also, don’t react to Lehtonen just yet. There’s no doubt he has all the potential in the world to be great. And I’ve heard from many sources that Vishnovskiy’s stock was in decline.

ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.

by Brandon Worley on Mar 4, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Cash

A good GM can find a way around money problems. The Stars had players with moderately high salary who could have been traded. And since money is a problem, why is he wasting 3m per season on a player like Ott? I have no problem trading Vish, it’s the return that is the problem. This team can’t take a risk on a player like Lehtonen. They have money issues so they can’t afford to spend $3m on an injury prone goalie. It is basic economics 101, proper allocation of a scarce resource. Joe gets an F- so far.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

They cant take a risk on Lethonen BUT

apparently they can take the risk on having two goalies that are UFA going into the offseason

by johnnywaitt on Mar 4, 2010 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

That

That isn’t a risk. Auld’s are available every offseason. There will always be goalies available for trade that don’t cost $3m and aren’t injury prone.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

and apparently Auld can lead a team to the playoffs?

if that was the case he would have remained the starting goaltender

by johnnywaitt on Mar 4, 2010 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

Nope

But he’s a servicable backup, something that every team needs.

by jf55510 on Mar 4, 2010 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

well maybe this provides a good chance to see what he can do with the rest of the season so we don’t just end up re-signing him blind?

I agree.

It is sad to see it end this way.

But it happens. Not everyone can go out like an Elway or Patrick Roy.

They’re just not getting anything past the goalies. One or two goals a game just isn’t enough.
More scoring would help even if the defense isn’t playing so hot.

Yeah

You can’t have this terrible of a D and only score 2 goals a night.

by bigtill2002 on Mar 4, 2010 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

D

I think it all comes down to the back end honestly….a better defense provides more time on attack and better passes out of our own end opening things up and not tiring everyone out in the neutral zone. I think even more than a true no.1 d-man this teams needs a PP QB.

And to expound on that

My post is directed more towards the posters who do nothing but tell us Turco, Niskanen, Skrastins, the defense, Crawford sucks…over and over.

Or people whose plan to rebuild the Stars consists solely of telling us who should be traded without any regard to the value the Stars might get in return…or what moves the Stars shouldn’t have made. I mean, really, we’re going so far as to question the move to send BJ Crombeen through waivers as a reason for this team’s ills?

C’mon.

BTW, I’ll look forward to that fanshot. Giving the state of this defense post-Olympic break, I’m all ears on your suggestion that Morrow should be traded to get some much needed defensive help in.

well i knew they didnt all play at once

i didnt know if there was some huge overhaul half way through the season or a bunch of minor league players brought up.

funny thing though, looking at the roster you will find a bunch of those names on the stanley cup for the 99 season. So keep that in mind every time we talk about blowing up the team. We could be just two moves away from a SOLID team.

by Hull Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

This team’s budget disappears in about a year. After that, we’ll be spending to the cap. And it’d be different if your agitator didn’t have Captain’s potential.

You don't know that either

just because a guy buys the team doesn’t mean they’re going to automatically spend an extra 10 million especially on a team that isn’t winning. if the rebuild spending more money will just we wasteful.

by Hull Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

if they’re rebuilding with a plan and cheap entry level players they’re not going to go spend gobs on a FA or two.

by Brad Gardner on Mar 4, 2010 10:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Hey Brad

Why do you think that is? I know the defense and goaltending are subpar. But when you look at our top 6 forwards, plus Otter, the experience of Mo and Lehts, the scrappy Petersen, and the “offensive” system of Crawford, how can they not average 3-4 goals a game? Is it, as someone mentioned before, having to play so much D because our Dmen are subpar?

by selke99 on Mar 4, 2010 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

We were averaging 3-4 goals a game back in Oct-Nov with the same guys.

What happened to them? They’ve all but disappeared. They’ve reappeared briefly here and there, but they’ve mostly been absent. We need those guys back if we’re going to have a chance at all.

by TracyJean on Mar 5, 2010 6:59 AM CST up reply actions

Someone remind me again how Marc Crawford still has a job?

This isnt a talent issue anymore. This is a preparation and scheme/coaching thing thats not working. Crawford goes and we get a real coach and maybe we make the playoffs. If he doesnt and is kept we go no where and we continue going no where next season.
