Woohoo
This baby is a playoff contender! What solid goaltending and defense. Nothing can stop them now!
The Stars depress me.
Then...
Quit watching them. That attitude is a contributing factor to their losses as well. No fans in the seats and when they are they aren’t cheering. Real fans know that anything can happen in 40 minutes of hockey.
you are not serious with this nonsense
why would anyone pay to watch effort like this? I love the stars but the players have to give some effort if they want respect.

Turco is part of the defense and he deserves as much if not more blame thus far. Stop defending him.
If you would read up the thread
No one is holding Marty blameless. Consensus is that the third goal was all on him. Second is questionable, although it started with blown defense. First goal was on the defense.
How about you stop blaming Marty for the work (or lack thereof) of the entire TEAM?

our defense is not perfect, but a good goalie could help cover that fact up.. sadly turco is no longer a good goalie
born to destroy

Someone has to ask them.
Cause I don’t see anyone in the media doing it. Gimme a mic and I’ll ask anything you want me to, within reason.
Because
Auld is a backup for a reason, and Letohnen(sp?) probably hasn’t played an NHL game since Zubie has.
No....
I have a crush on goalies that are 125% healthy and can go in to a game that is out of hand like Tuesday and tonight. Lehtonen isn’t this.
So you suggest keeping three goalies???
or not having lethonen at all?
or not having a starting goalie?
Who is the Stars back up goalie right now? A: Lehtonen
Can he play right now @ 8:40pm on Thursday, March 4th, 2010? No one knows that answer.
Then let's wait until we see him Saturday before we jump to any conclusions, yes?

Ummm
I don’t hate the Stars, I actually like the Stars which is why I’m pissed that a JV GM has screwed this thing up.
how did joe screw it up?
he basically had HALF an offseason.
give him another season before you throw him under the bus
Well
Didn’t upgrade the G position when given the opportunity.
Poor decision on firing Tipp and hiring Crawford.
Didn’t upgrade the D in the offseason when everyone in the world knew it was a problem.
Gave a bad extension to an average player (Ott) handcuffing the team even more financially.
When faced with the fact that his team is not that good, he did nothing to upgrade it or to move pieces for assets.
In fact, I can’t think of much good he’s done.
-He signed Lethonen. I consider that a possible upgrade (we wont know until after a couple of weeks)
-I agree on Tippet but I believe he thinks if he is gonna lose he is gonna lose with the crew he chooses not the crew he inherits.
-Agree with not upgrading the D but he does not really have any wiggle room with salary.
-Would you rather lose Ott and lose the heart of the team? Have you watched this team play when Ott is injured?
Ummm
I don’t consider an injury prone goalie who costs $3m an upgrade.
I would rather lose Ott than have to lose either Neal or Grossman because their new salaries won’t fit under the budget and I’d rather lose Ott and have more cash to sign a defenseman in the offseason. You say that it wasn’t Joe’s fault that he couldn’t upgrade the D because of the budget and then he signs a player to a contract he doesn’t deserve, hurting the ability to get D help.
Ummm
Ummm, he’s had a full season of move possibilities. He’s had the summer, a draft and a trade dealine to deal with and he failed in helping this team.
A year does not a GM make. Or however it goes.
"It would've been a huge momentum boost if we had beaten the St. Mary's School for the Blessed, Blind, Deaf and Dumb."

twitter.com/PatIVERSEN
Sure it does.
It does when everyone and their mother knows the weaknesses and the GM does nothing.
Well...
I don’t think there was that big an opportunity to really upgrade the goaltending position. Did you see any big name goalies moved yesterday? NO? So when the Stars would try and get one, the price would be MONSTROUSLY high.
And Joe has a low number of draft picks next year, and he’s trying to rebuild long term. He needed to get draft picks, not give up young prospects and future draft picks.
Same thing with goaltending. Kaberle? Not moving. Souray? Out for season. Visnovsky? Could be had, but apparently Stars didn’t have enough.
ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.
by Brandon Worley on Mar 4, 2010 8:52 PM CST up reply actions
Ok
Ok, I would have preferred to roll with Turco and Auld then waste money and an assett on getting Lethonen. With Lethonen you gave up a young player for an injury prone expensive player who you don’t know can be your starting goalie next season even though you are now committed to him.
I have no problem giving up players for more picks, not young players. In fact, I think I’m the won who advocated giving up Turco for any pick and was shouted down.
I’m also talking about during the past offseason. He knew the defense was a problem and signed Woywika and Skrastins. Talk about inspiring.
so what would happen in the offseason
when auld AND turco were UFA?
With what money did he have to spend on a defenseman?
Also, don’t react to Lehtonen just yet. There’s no doubt he has all the potential in the world to be great. And I’ve heard from many sources that Vishnovskiy’s stock was in decline.
ProHockeyTalk: General NHL news, rumors and analysis, from the best hockey mind at NBCSports.com.
by Brandon Worley on Mar 4, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions
Cash
A good GM can find a way around money problems. The Stars had players with moderately high salary who could have been traded. And since money is a problem, why is he wasting 3m per season on a player like Ott? I have no problem trading Vish, it’s the return that is the problem. This team can’t take a risk on a player like Lehtonen. They have money issues so they can’t afford to spend $3m on an injury prone goalie. It is basic economics 101, proper allocation of a scarce resource. Joe gets an F- so far.
They cant take a risk on Lethonen BUT
apparently they can take the risk on having two goalies that are UFA going into the offseason
That
That isn’t a risk. Auld’s are available every offseason. There will always be goalies available for trade that don’t cost $3m and aren’t injury prone.
and apparently Auld can lead a team to the playoffs?
if that was the case he would have remained the starting goaltender
Nope
But he’s a servicable backup, something that every team needs.
but what about a starting goalie?
lets play russian roulette in the offseason i guess
Already doing that...
Joe’s already doing that, but it comes with a $3m price tag.
but if he doesnt work out these last games we have to option to
NOT SIGN HIM NEXT SEASON
i find that a little less risky
Six of one, half dozen of another. Except in your scenario, the Stars traded an asset that could have been used in another trade.
im done talking about this
i respect your opinion but i wholly disagree
k im done for now
we dont see eye to eye and i respect your opinion but i disagree
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
i’m tired of everyone complaining so much when we lose and not praising enough when we win.

There are still guidelines..

Quck question
How come Otter doesn’t take more faceoffs? This could be the dumb Texas hockey fan in me but wouldn’t they put him in the circle more since he wins so many?
That's what I've kind of liked a bit when we were playing Benn at Center.
He gets kicked out of a draw, in comes Ott.

Gotta start somewhere
Suffice to say, if the Stars have any designs on coming back, it needs to start with this next power play.
So hey dead horse, now that we're done beating you...
If the rumors are true, I don’t think I’d mind a Ribs trade. And I know, it sounds assenine to say.
A trade won't happen for a while now...
So no need to beat those horse either.

as much as i love him
i think we have enough offensive talent to last so i would not mind trading Ribs
Same for me
I like him but if he has a strong end of the season, ship him out with Nisky, and you have a bad ass 1st line d man on your hands
what happens if you trade ribeiro and
richards doens’t re-sign because he has no interest in playing for a middling team?
Is Benn better at center than wing?
IS wandell a true 2nd line center?
do you really want those to be your centers? cause that screams worst team in the league to me.
Oh well so much for that power play

going by GVT
He’s roughly been equivalent to Matt Niskanen, Fabian Brunnstrom, and Brian Sutherby this year.
Is it my imagination
or has Ribeiro been the best forward the past five games or so? Maybe it would be worth putting him on a top line with Richards?
I agree, he's been on fire since coming back...

but we are like this when we are right on the edge of the playoff spots
not sitting at the very bottom already almost eliminated from the playoffs
It's the nature of the region
I see it from Dallas Cowboy fans, Texas Longhorn fans, and Oklahoma Sooner fans all the freaking time.
Fans that don’t realize 98% of fans from other teams would dearly love to trade histories with them.
I'm the opposite
be bad or be good but don’t be in the middle. At least I can get someone excited about a good pick.
What happened to all the scoring by the forwards.
They’re just not getting anything past the goalies. One or two goals a game just isn’t enough.
More scoring would help even if the defense isn’t playing so hot.
Gotta have hockey!

D
I think it all comes down to the back end honestly….a better defense provides more time on attack and better passes out of our own end opening things up and not tiring everyone out in the neutral zone. I think even more than a true no.1 d-man this teams needs a PP QB.
Speaking of...
I was just thinking this team even though Morrow is the captain, doesn’t have a vocal leader.

I'll be working saturday
I’ll write my treatise on how I would fix things and post it in the fanshots
And to expound on that
My post is directed more towards the posters who do nothing but tell us Turco, Niskanen, Skrastins, the defense, Crawford sucks…over and over.
Or people whose plan to rebuild the Stars consists solely of telling us who should be traded without any regard to the value the Stars might get in return…or what moves the Stars shouldn’t have made. I mean, really, we’re going so far as to question the move to send BJ Crombeen through waivers as a reason for this team’s ills?
C’mon.
BTW, I’ll look forward to that fanshot. Giving the state of this defense post-Olympic break, I’m all ears on your suggestion that Morrow should be traded to get some much needed defensive help in.
two possibles
that will be mentioned
Morrow for Jackson and Colton Tuebert
or Morrow for Ballard and Colby Robak
You will get an extra hug for that post, my friend.
Also, I wonder what the Canadians (people, not the team) would say to the idea of the Stars trading Morrow after his performance in the Olympics.
Oh Arrrtt!!!!

Oh and also, could you explain how all the armchair quarterbacks know so much more than a whole slew of people

Supporting your local ice troll, 24/7/365
Here's what's sad
It’s been mentioned before. But in this team’s short life, we’ve never seen it suck. This is a lot for us to deal with.
i was nine and an avid stars fan
BUT its hard to remember the feelings from back that far
Here's a reminder
http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/DAL/1996.html
Mike Modano doubled up Greg Adams who was 2nd in pts.
how come
there were 44 players on that roster?
there were never 44 at one time
all those guys played at one point though, and half of them sucked.
nice guys though. i have fond Skate With The Stars memories.
well i knew they didnt all play at once
i didnt know if there was some huge overhaul half way through the season or a bunch of minor league players brought up.
funny thing though, looking at the roster you will find a bunch of those names on the stanley cup for the 99 season. So keep that in mind every time we talk about blowing up the team. We could be just two moves away from a SOLID team.
The ones that did were young for the most part.
Nieuwendyk was an in season pick up.
Sydor was an in season pick up.
When Brent Gilchrist is your 3rd leading scorer…kill yourself.
HA
but yeah i can see similarities in this team though. Minus two sure handed HOFers (mo and joe) we have a lot of upside. Basically a #1 and a #3 d-man and have Kari come through we should be right there in the mix of things yet again.
Long time ago though.
I’m going through this with my beloved Denver Broncos right now. It’s tough, because we’ve never been this deflated since forever, but we just gotta ride it out and trust things will get better.
After all, isn’t that how sports go? You have to go through the lows to get to the ups..

Though you would have no reason
to know this its actually Ms. blowupthefranchise. And I don’t want to get rid of everyone I just want to get rid of like half of it.
well they're kinda
stuck with him and honestly I’d rather keep Ott than Morrow at this stage so I don’t have an issue with him per say even if I dislike his new contract.
His contract
Was cheap. About 29 other teams were willing to offer more than that. Home team discount.
That theory cannot be proven
/end Greggo voice.
I highly doubt people were lining up to give him 12 mil with the cap possibly shrinking.
Yeah it is
Especially when that agitation has the leading faceoff percentage and puts what little asses that are still into Stars hockey in the seats. Not to mention, if we’re overpaying for him, other teams would have over overpayed for him.
Agreeing to disagree is giving up
There would be less people if Otter wasn’t there. If you couldn’t tell, he’s my favorite player.
I'll be sure to tell those other 6000 or so that are there when we go on the weekends,
that they are all invisible. Or maybe figments of my imagination. Yeah. That must be it.
Supporting your local ice troll, 24/7/365
I don't hate otter
I think he’s got value but not that kind of value on a team with a budget and serious issues on the defense.
This team’s budget disappears in about a year. After that, we’ll be spending to the cap. And it’d be different if your agitator didn’t have Captain’s potential.
You don't know that either
just because a guy buys the team doesn’t mean they’re going to automatically spend an extra 10 million especially on a team that isn’t winning. if the rebuild spending more money will just we wasteful.
No, we don't know that but it's rare that a new owner doesn't come in prepared
to spend more money to get a winning team. A winning team means profits.

REFUND!!!
I want my $140 for Center Ice refunded, I’m sure HSG can afford that right? Hahahahaha, j/k. I guess its suffering through seasons like these that will make the next CUP just that much better.
Hey Brad
Why do you think that is? I know the defense and goaltending are subpar. But when you look at our top 6 forwards, plus Otter, the experience of Mo and Lehts, the scrappy Petersen, and the “offensive” system of Crawford, how can they not average 3-4 goals a game? Is it, as someone mentioned before, having to play so much D because our Dmen are subpar?
We were averaging 3-4 goals a game back in Oct-Nov with the same guys.
What happened to them? They’ve all but disappeared. They’ve reappeared briefly here and there, but they’ve mostly been absent. We need those guys back if we’re going to have a chance at all.
Someone remind me again how Marc Crawford still has a job?
This isnt a talent issue anymore. This is a preparation and scheme/coaching thing thats not working. Crawford goes and we get a real coach and maybe we make the playoffs. If he doesnt and is kept we go no where and we continue going no where next season.
