Not enough offense for my liking, but some solid defensive numbers.

Do you seriously believe that will be enough?

One guy is going to magically make this defense close to average? This team is not good and one guy won’t change that. Joe sitting on his hands held this franchise back last year and he’s going to repeat the same mistake this year.

by Hull Fan on Mar 2, 2010 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

You lose a lot of credibility when you call out a first year GM for the past season’s failure.

That said. An extra first line dman can make a world of difference. Everyone else gets bumped down the totem pole and you have a much more solid core defensive unit. IE: Robi and Grossman might not both be first liners, but either of them sure look good in the second pairing.

by .KARMA on Mar 2, 2010 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

What he gets a pass because

he’s only been on the job 1 year? His job is to improve the team. He hasn’t done that yet. Why should he get a disclaimer for that?

And you can call it rhetoric or not but Shea freaking Weber alone doesn’t make this team above average. They’ve still got holes as long as half the freaking defense currently playing takes the ice every night.

by Hull Fan on Mar 2, 2010 11:24 PM CST up reply actions

He’s been on the job for one year, therefore he couldn’t have “sat on his hands” last year at the deadline.

Top defensemen in the league get 20+ minutes on the ice every night. Every minute the top dman is on the ice, is a minute one of our current defense is not on the ice. Keeping Niskanen’s -9 off the ice will make a substantial difference.

To be honest, I think it's for the best.

That four game stretch before the break kind of disguised the weaknesses on this team. Maybe this game will get the rose-colored glasses off and Joe will start working the phones to fix it.

Because as currently constructed, we won’t make the playoffs. We’re missing that something.

How is Lehtonen not in?

Yes this is not Turcos fault at all really, but how do you not make a change when it’s 4-0 in the 2nd period. There would be no pressure to win on Lehtonen, he could get his feet wet, and if he does well he gains confidence going into the next start.

I am kinda wondering about that...

But at the same time he is still coming off an injury. The worst thing to do is throw him to the wolves, play behind a team that is about five steps behind the play and hope he stays healthy.

Well the good news...

The fan turn out was lame.. so at least they didn’t lay down for a pathetic game in front of a sell out.

The Kings really didn't play that well

Despite all the goals, the Kings didn’t play very well for the league’s 3rd place team. They looked very shaky defensively and Quick looked TERRIBLE for several stops. Sure he made some decent ones, but after that flubbed clearing attempt that almost resulted in a GOALIE own-goal, he made several very shaky saves.

The difference? The Stars were that much worse for most of the game. They looked totally uninterested and very sloppy. They lost puck battles, most of the physical battles and pretty much took most of their shots from the point with no real screen and MISSED.

I don’t even now how many times they would set up (if you can call it that) in the zone and go overload and then pass the puck to the defenseman who wasn’t there. I understand it happens but COME ON. That was a big huge waste of everyone’s time.

You can’t blame this one on Turco- they let the Kings have the zone any time they wanted it…and the worst part is that THEY looked disinterested for most of it.

Geez

Only saw one person ripping Turco in here. Sure it wasn’t all his fault, but why is everybody so hesitant to admit when he has a bad night?

That Frolov goal

with the Ole lay was freaking awful. Turco can’t be run out of town fast enough.

Our readers are pretty smart that way.

Marc Crawford said it himself after the game:

``You certainly can’t pin [the loss] on Marty. He wasn’t as good as their guy, but at the same time, we can’t give up those low cycle walk chances that are tap-in goals. No goalie in the world is going to stop those goal mouth ones and they had two or three of those tonight.’’

There were a dozen other, BIGGER problems tonight.

He wasn’t as good as their guy

I don’t think people are being smart, I think they’re being loyal to a fault.

There's a difference

Between saying he wasn’t great and saying it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t steal one, that’s for sure…but I’m really sick of hearing about how Turco caused this team to be where it is at. The defense and complete lack of offense at key times caused it.

The Kings game showcased how poorly the system is working. When you can’t even get through the neutral zone and can’t set up on the PP AND you always miss the net, you’re going to have issues. They supposedly had more shots but I think that was the building counters being generous. They mostly missed the net, missed passes to each other, missed the checks, or never got into position.

This team isn't making the playoffs

and the refusal to rebuild will make us the mid 90s Oilers rather than a one of the better clubs in the league.
