"From my standpoint, I've wanted him to know all along how I feel about him, how I feel he's important to our team's success and how he is a Dallas Star through and through. We talk about those things and he wants to be a Dallas Star. Obviously, the agent is trying to maximize what is best for Steve. That's the way it's gone. It's gone back and forth a little bit. I know time is of the essence here with March 3rd looming. We're going to do what's right for the franchise, taking in some of the financial considerations as well. Yet we realize we'd like to be able to sign a great player like Steve Ott."

I'm gonna go balistic if they don't sign him.
I know it’s all posturing by both parties…but I just fail to see how letting him go to another team is wise for us.
It's not just posturing
Joe has to think about the rest of the team. Contract talks have not been going well since our finances are under serious restriction (and I don’t expect that to change).
It’s a business…and business has not been good…

I've had a gut feeling all month that Otter is gone after this season.
It’s so damn hard to imagine though.
And I listened to the interview today….and it sure sounded like Joe was avoiding actually answering that question of signing Ott.

Hockey nut since the night of 5/2/08. What a night it was.
If he's not signed by March 3...
He’s traded. It’s simple as that.

That's what I thought too.
I actually had that argument with some friends after a Stars game walking out of the AAC. They were almost distraught at the thought of losing Otter.
And really, just thinking about life without Otter on the ice is a bit heartbreaking.

You trade him and tell his agent
when he goes out and shops himself this summer, come back to us with whatever offer you’re going to accept. As long as he gives them another chance that’s all you can ask for. Ott’s gotta do what’s best for him and so does Dallas. I personally can’t blame him for wanting to get paid on what will probably be his one big contract.
I also won’t be angry at Joe or the Stars for taking a stand and saying we can’t/won’t pay you 3 million. Far better to have a favorite team rather than a favorite player. I don’t worry about the Stars leaving Dallas. Players get traded all the time.
he...you're still a newb...
After being a Stars fan for 17 years, you get used to these types of trades happening.

Maybe ...
The Langenbrunner trade still hurts , that it was for Arnott is just salt in the wound.
There are certainly some that are worse.
That’s the worst of them all.

Do you really
ever get used to it? I may understand its a business but it never quite makes sense to my hockey heart. Especially when we’re talking about one of my favorite players. I’ve just been trying to resign myself to this fate all year….I just don’t LIKE it.. ;-)

I don't think everyone gets used to it.
It’s a personality thing. I’m not the kind of guy that just gets used to the idea that pro sports players are a “commodity”. I think of them as people first players second. When I become a fan of a person/player it does become hard to see them go.
Maybe that’s the native Texan in me. Once a Texan…always a Texan.
