Brandon Worley posted a fantastic article that pointed out the fact that speedy teams kill the stars. Not many people commented on it so I thought I would post my response to see what the thoughts are of other people on this subject and how the stars can fix it.
stars need to adapt their overall game plan to the diffrent teams they play
trying to play the aggressive system against these teams wont be affective because these teams play the same system and better. The way to defeat a fast team is to dictate the pace of the game by slowing it down and playing boring slow possession hockey. Against teams like these the clock is your best friend, you wanna kill time passing it around in your own zone and controlling the puck making smart safe passes. I'm not talking about a full out defensive trap style game just if you break out and don't see a clear opening into their zone circle back and pass it back to your own end. Get them chasing, they may be fast but the puck moves faster. If we can be a team that one game plays the rush offensive game that works for most teams, then the next game play a slow boring defensive possession game then that's what makes a good dynamic team. I know its easier said then done and I'm not sure if our defense has that much patience and confidence with the puck but why not try it? It seems like when we play these teams we try to be a rush team some times and a defensive possession team others throughout the game. We need to pick one game plan and stick with it for that game.
I love that or team is buying into the new system but you don't have to use only one.
