Stars Can't Solve Quick, Nor Can They Solve NHL Officiating Logic in 3-1 Loss

First thing's first, though.

Jonathan Quick was outstanding in the net for the Kings. And we also got to see first hand why L.A. hasn't surrendered any goals at home on the penalty kill.

Quick only allowed a great individual effort by Jamie Benn to beat him late in the first period after the young sniper beat Drew Doughty in a race to the puck before nimbly backhanding a shot through Quick's five hole to tie the game at 1-1.

And then when the Stars found themselves with a 5-on-3 in the third period, Loui Eriksson missed an open half of the net after an outstanding setup by Brad Richards that had the Kings guessing all the way where he was going to go. If Loui doesn't miss, it's a 2-2 game and the Stars have a golden chance to get some points out of tonight's game.

Instead, it's a 3-1 loss thanks also to a beauty of a game winning goal by Justin Williams off the post and in past a screened Kari Lehtonen.

And while the officials can't be blamed for the loss, I do have one question for Brad Meier and Dan O'Rourke after the jump.

Brad Richardson slams Trevor Daley into the boards with what's called a cross check, but could also have easily been a hit from behind and it's only a two minute minor.

Adam Burish battles with Doughty in the corner in a clear battle for the puck, just happens to nudge him from behind, Doughty dives into the boards, and it's a five minute major and a game misconduct?

And yes, I said Doughty dove into the boards. In fact, I'm going to lobby all other NHL fanbases to officially strip the Avalanche of the "Dives" moniker and ask that it be re-applied to the Los Angeles Kings.

Because Doughty's dive wasn't the only thespian act that a Kings player used to draw a call. Dustin Brown used it to his advantage.

Twice on "interference" calls to Karlis Skrastins late in the second period, and on a Steve Ott "interference" call.

Now there's a part of me that doesn't blame either player for doing it. Not when the refs are going to buy it hook, line, and sinker seemingly every time.

Still, both Brown and Doughty looked like a couple of Italian soccer players out on the ice tonight. And that's simply embarrassing if you ask me.

On to Disneyland tomorrow night.
