Possible Brad Richards trade scenario that wouldn't kill the Stars

First for a little disclaimer- Brad Richards is my absolute favorite player (maybe Neal is tied for that). But, we all know the problems the Stars are going to have later on in the season near the trade deadline and I think there may be a nice solution showing itself out there which, while it wouldn't bring back all of B-Rad's vailue, would bring back a lot of it and not make it as huge of a loss.

Per this (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=338047) article on TSN.ca, Brian Murray the GM in Ottawa is ready to make some big changes to his roster because of their crappy start. Now one of the Ottawa players who has always caught a lot of unwarranted flak from Sens fans is Jason Spezza. His nerdy laugh aside, he's a great playmaker like Brad and can put up huge numbers with real scoring linemates (like Neal and Eriksson) and has never really been the underachiever the Senators fans have made him out to be. He has been the goat there for a long time without it being warranted. Also, he's signed through the 2013/14 season which would give the Stars some stability on that first line which they need. If the Stars could get Spezza and a draft pick or another role-player type guy for Richards it could be a deal that works out both ways.

I know this trade talk won't be popular here on DBD and I don't really like it myself as I love Brad and really want him to stay. But give it a gander and try to consider the positives it could bring to the Stars.

Here's to another nice win streak starting tomorrow against the Florida Kittens.

Here's the thing

It’s been largely talked about why we’ve won our first four games and the chant has been largely the same. It’s been “Kaaarrriii!! Kaaarrriii!! Kaaarrriii!!” and rightly so. However, if you take a close look back at those games there’s one other person that has been practically carrying the team on his shoulders and that guy is Brad Richards. Not just his goal production, but look at the guys assists. So many of those chances scored by other guys came off of Richards’ stick. Not to mention some of the brilliant plays he’s made defensively when many of our forwards have struggled going the other way. Without Brad we’d be 0-5. Let’s put it this way, IMHO, there just is no rose colored scenario that consists of him not being in a Stars uniform at the end of this year. It doesn’t mean we won’t recover if that winds up being the case. However, If we lose him then our team will simply not be as good as we were when we had him no matter who we get in return. We’ve got a lot of great forward talent but you have to have play-makers to have a competitive team and anyone we get as a bargain in a trade would be a question mark at best. He is one of the best guys in the league. Period. We need to do everything and anything we can to keep him. I know you mean well and are trying to help but I just don’t want to think about finding the silver lining, until the cloud is actually gray. I don’t want to make Lemonade, until I’m sure that all life has handed me are lemons. I don’t want to think about how, “it could be worse,” until it’s actually that horrible.

you're right but

Spezza is a great set up man also. He’s really just under the microscope constantly and always the scapegoat for everyone in ottawa

Not sure about a trade with Ottawa

for Spezza but I think getting a guy like Matt Carkner on their defense would be great.

He has been an even player /- wise in 81 games on a team that has had suspect goaltending at best and only 1 other Dman who finished on the "" side. He had 190 PIMs last year and chipped in offensively for a guy who is mostly called on to be a “tough guy” dman. You might could say his +/- is decent because he is off the ice so much due to fighting majors.

Dmen fighters are the best “enforcers” because most of the fights are caused by having that Alpha Male presence around your net ala Derrian Hatcher. They aren’t gonna chase a forward around the neutral zone to mix it up. It’s going to usually be right around the net. “Oh you wanna spray my goalie with snow or take extra whacks at him fishing for rebounds? Ok how about I turn your face inside out? And your little partner in crime linemate is next!”

I don’t see how it would be that difficult to trade for a guy like that. and not have to give up much in return.

I would want nothing to do with....

Jason Spezza. For starters his salary is 8million for the next 4 seasons million which would put them in an even worse salary position than they currently in. So if the Stars are not capable of talking contract with Richards right now I doubt they are allowed to talk trade involving a player with a higher salary, who is locked up long term.

This is true but here are two scenarios i thought of

The Stars are out of the race by the deadline, talks with Brad have made it obvious that he won’t take a hometown discount: The stars trade him for maybe a 2nd line guy, a 3-4 pair defensman, and a prospect. or 2 d-men or whatever combination. They maybe help their defense but don’t fill the hole of the offense.

The Stars make the playoffs. They either go deep or show that they will be able to by next year( the by next year part is crucial). Here there are 3 things i can think of: 1) Brad accepts a slight hometown discount or just to come back on a long term contract where the first 2-3 years(until the team will definitely have a new owner and money) he gets the same exact salary as he’s making now, and then the years after that he gets the raise he deserves. 2) Brad doesn’t accept a discount and walks early in free agency. 3) The Stars trade his rights at the deadline. NOW, if this were to happen and the stars are considered a good or even very good team by the end of the season. Don’t you think the creditors could be convinced to let Joe use literally only 2k more than he’s spending on Brad to secure a guy like Spezza who, while not being as good as Brad, is an amazing playmaker? 2K isn’t very much to ask for in the first place, and especially wouldn’t be coming off a good year with a playoff run of any sort that would lead to higher attendance rates, more merch sales, more advertising, possible new tv deals and the whole lot.

Once again, if Brad leaves Dallas I’ll be very sad no matter who we get back if we even do. Even if we got Henrik Sedin, or Mike Green, or Backstrom (washington’s) or one of those guys i would be bitter that brad left

I want nothing to do with a dirty Sen. Ew.

B-Rad>Spezza.

Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

I’m telling you, you would love to have Matt Carkner here. But it would have to be role player for role player trade. B-Rad is off the table.

Not the best trade

But I do think Spezza would do incredibly in Dallas. He’s treated terribly by fans in Ottawa and he doesn’t have the talented wingers he used to. He also played with Steve Ott back in Junior and they were a force. Unfortunately, there’s nothing he could do to make it worth while for Richie.

Besides

B-Rad wouldn’t waive his no trade clause to go to the go nowhere Sens.

I guess I'm not alone

I’ve never really been a big Spezza guy, I don’t know why but I just don’t like him. I hope if the Stars have to trade Brad, they get something better than Spezza.

I don't know...

Coming from a fan of both teams, I might like this trade with 2 exceptions: 1) the trade is straight up Spezza for Richards and 2) Richards has a contract. I love both players, but from the sens fan perspective, there’s just no way they’re trading Jason for another player who’s potentially a free agent, and adding another player on top of that is, well, out of the question. No matter how good Richards is, Spezza is younger and has more potential. With better linemates, Spezza could put up 100 points, Richards could as well, but Spezza has a long term contract (a little over-priced but not too unreasonable) and that is the deal breaker. You don’t find number 1 center’s everyday in the NHL, and to trade one for another one of matched skills would be fine if they need a change of scenery (Spezza could sure use it) but they both would have to have a lenghty contract or both be pending free agents at the same time. Again, I love both these players, but I just don’t see this trade happening, even if it’s a swap with my 2 favorite teams.

This is true

you’d have to get Richards to agree to a new contract, and considering how abysmal the Sens have been, I think he rather be a free agent.
