Defending Big D Roll Call
We'll continue our coverage of camp this evening with a close look at early impressions from the Stars so far under Marc Crawford. Also look forward to an exclusive story on the closing of the Duncanville Dr Pepper Starcenter. In the meantime, some site news:
Training camp has officially started and the season is just around the corner (I've updated the countdown clock on the left sidebar, by the way). Defending Big D has grown and expanded over the summer, to include some of the best Stars fans and writers I could possible have the pleasure of working with. We are still a relatively young community here, but I'm excited to see what we can do as we move on into the season.
With that in mind, I'd like to put out another roll call. If you are a frequent guest, a regular reader or brand new to our little neck of the internet, sign in and let us know you're here. Tell us your name and why you love the Stars. So if you're a member, sign in and drop us a comment. If you're a reader or a lurker, signing up is easy and free to do, and we'd love to have you join in the conversation.
A few quick thoughts on our site here:
Never hesitate to comment on a thread or story. This isn't about commenting on the story itself, it's about engaging in conversation and debate with fellow Stars fans. SB Nation has the most advanced commenting technology in sports websites, we'd be amiss not to take advantage. Also, FanPosts and FanShots are your way of sharing your thoughts on the team. If you have something to say or breaking news happens, I won't hesitate to promote it to the main page. I want to hear what you have so say about the Stars as well.

“jonesing for some Stars hockey”
That’s what we’re all doing right now.
Oh yeah...
Brandon here. Die hard Dallas Stars fan (and Cowboys, Mavs and Rangers). My stepmom got me hooked in 1993 when the team moved to town. Shane Churla instantly became my favorite player.

i'm great.
my name is cole jones, and i’m a diehard stars fan and fellow stars blogger.
like brandon, been a fan since 1993… only my instant favorite players were derian hatcher and andy moog.
when i’m not watching hockey, i like listening to retro hardcore punk on vinyl, drinking murphy’s irish stout, and cheering for the tennessee titans and boston red sox.
I'm the other Brandon
And in addition to liking the Stars and all Dallas area teams, because I’m bored and bred here, I also like the Blackhawks and Islanders (I’ve been a hockey fan before Norm Green even bought the North Stars and moved them to town).
I also like the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants…and despite having been raised in Texas….I’m a Sooner fan.
Blame my dad for that last part. :o)

I am pumped
My name is Trevor, I went to school in Denton back in the late 90’s (the glory years) and have been a huge Stars fan ever since. I live in Austin so needless to say I cant wait for the Texas Stars to get going (when the hell are they going to show what the uniforms will look like?). Anyway, Brandon and Art you guys do a great job keeping everyone informed, keep up the excellent writing.
Cole Jones may have the first look for you:

You find the rest of the pics here, taken from NHL 10 apparently.

outstanding investigative work sir
I hope those aren’t really what they will look like, they are more boring than the current big league teams’ sweaters
Stars Fan in Iraq
Hey all,
My name is Joel and I have been a Stars fan since ’96.
I am from Fort Worth, have been at Fort Hood since 02, and am addicted to Stars Hockey.
I am currently on my second tour of Iraq. If all works out, I should be home for leave in October and catch at least one game. I will be home in time to catch the second half of the the season,( and if the Hockey Gods are smiling on the team this year, some playoff action too?)
I love the site, and check it multiple times daily. I will be here even more often once the season starts.
Thank you Brandon and all the others who put so much time and energy into this site.
I'm Derek
And while I’m not a Stars fan first and foremost, I do love everything hockey. Now that preseason has started, I will probably not be moving from my couch thanks the amazing NHL Center Ice package. I look forward to writing for the site for a full season this year and providing a ton NHL News in the process. Like Brandon Worley said above, if you see breaking news or just a story you think the rest of us would enjoy, post as either a FanShot or FanPost. While most of us spend numerous hours combing the net for Stars related news and notes, we obviously won’t catch them all. Thanks and I’m looking forward to a great year season!

I'm Reagan
in Arlington. I started watching hockey after the Stars moved down here. I was in high school and my parents thought I was nuts but never tried to stop me. Now its an obsession. They still don’t understand but acknowledge it won’t change.
Right now the Rangers are in a playoff race and my attention has so wained with college football (go horns) and hockey just about to start up again. That probably makes me a questionable baseball fan but enthusiasm for baseball in comparison to hockey and football isn’t nearly the same.
I do have one question, looking for input. I’ve had directv for five years. I love it but without versus I’m really beginning to think about switching to U-Verse. Does anyone have U-Verse? Would you recommend it? Can I get the Center Ice package? Not only would I miss the Dallas games on Versus but I’d also miss the other games it carries that aren’t on center ice, not to mention college football and WEC. What should I do?
To answer your questions
Does anyone have U-Verse?
Yes, I’ve had it for a year and for the price, I like it.
Would you recommend it?
Sure, but….
Can I get the Center Ice package?
Not offered as of yet. That appears to be the biggest drawback of U-verse in that they don’t offer the MLB Network or the NFL Redzone Channel either. They do have NHL Network on the sports tier though.
Versus is on the U200 tier for about $65 per month. If you want that AND the NHL Network, it’ll be $75 per month.
Not only would I miss the Dallas games on Versus but I’d also miss the other games it carries that aren’t on center ice, not to mention college football and WEC. What should I do?
Well, you could also see if FiOS is available. I’m somewhat lucky in that regard as both U-Verse and FiOS are available to me in Watauga. So if U-Verse pisses me off, I can just threaten to switch. ;)
by Brandon Bibb on Sep 14, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd recommend FiOS to anyone...
That sucks about Versus on Directv. Not having Versus in April and May would be a deal breaker for me.
Not having it the rest of the year…not that concerned. I wouldn’t miss watching the Rangers and Penguins and Flyers play every single Monday night.

No Fios where I am
dammit. As for versus, I love the WEC and I sometimes watch the early Philly or Washington games on that Versus. I’ll watch more of my center ice but it’s a real beating to not get everything when I’m paying $73 a month plus the center ice fees.
I have uverse and I do recommend it
I live in Austin, and with the other cable option here in town (time warner) you get fox sports SW but it is the san antonio version, therefore anytime a stars game is on AND a spurs game they always broadcast the basketball game. With uverse Fox sports SW has 4 channels: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio AND an alternate channelas well. It is the shit! Most of those broadcasts are in HD as well. I couldnt be happier, I went from watching maybe 15 regular season games in ’07, to probably 40 last year.
I'm Andrew
Die hard stars fan. Got into hockey in 1996 when I was 6 years old after my pops took me to my first game in Amarillo Texas( back then called the Amarillo rattlers) soon after I found out that Dallas had an NHL team and have been a fan ever since. Now days I play hockey ( both ice ans roller)and live close to duck territory( San Diego) but still go to see the stars take on the ducks as well as a trip back to Dallas every now and then. GO STARS!!!
Hey now.
I’m ghtd36, and my hockey season resolution is to become (again?) a regular on DBD. My season tickets arrived yesterday (splitting with a buddy) and I am fired up.
Admittedly, I’m not as well-versed in the “game within the game” of hockey, but I’m really trying to learn. I think hockey is amazing, and am excited to get far, far, far more invested in it than my girlfriend would like me to.
Go Stars.
"I love winning." - rockin_rangers, on May 16, 2009
Tom here
and while my true loyalty is pledged to the Avalanche first and foremost, I’ve unofficially adopted the Stars while going to school down here in Texas because any hockey is better than no hockey.
I’m a classic lurker, so you won’t see much of me, but i’ll pop my head in every once in a while with a question or two. You guys do great work—keep it up!
Unlikely
I’m a big Stars fan, and my favorite it Steve Ott. I’m also a knitter, and meet regularly with a group of women, most of whom are also big Stars fan. The Stars are one of our favorite topics, while we’re serenely knitting away. Yeah, who would have thought…?
My husband and I went to the practice and scrimmage today, for my birthday. (Really, what better way to celebrate?) It was SO much fun! All the fans in the Dallas area should try to get by there this week! And thanks to Defending Big D for announcing the schedule.
off-topic
Who is picking in the redraft. I think you may be getting destroyed, bud…..
Bourque – Malkin – Perry
Ott – Sheppard – Conroy
Xxxx – Halpern – Hunter
Xxxx – Kopecky – Xxxx
Salvador – Regehr
Giordano – Klein
Finger – Ference
Clemmensen
LaBarbera
all for fun, so its all good. ;)
Ha ha...
That’s me.
It’s a very interesting exercise, and one that is tough to do when I’m picking once every other day or so, and sometimes once a week. With everything else going on, I just go with what I can. But I will share my method.
After the first five rounds or so, I go with BPA. I base my decisions not just on points, but on overall game as well (CORSI rating, pts/60, overall +/-. Remember, this isn’t a Fantasy draft so I’m not looking to build a team that puts up an insane amount of numbers. I wanted to build an even, strong team with power up front but is interchangeable as well.
Will it work? We’ll see. All I know is that no one has ever done something like this before.

thought it was fantasy
well since it isnt fantasy its not bad at all. I really like the Salvador late pick-up. I am not a Clemmensen believer, but its all good. If I was drafting someone else wouldn’t like it. :) thanks for the response. Did not expect one.
