Comparing the Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes

[Editor's Note by Brandon Worley] Thanks to DBD regular Brad_Richards_Rocks for putting up this FanPost. It's a great read on how two comparable hockey franchises in the south have walked completely different paths over the past decade.

Rory Boylen from The Hockey News posted a blog entry comparing two different franchises from down South: Dallas and Phoenix.  The biggest difference between the two is that one is successful while the other isn't.  There are some very good points in there.

One, for instance, is that the Stars kept their core together with players like, Mike Modano, Jere Lehtinen, and Sergei Zubov staying here for so long.  The Coyotes, on the other hand, let go of guys like Jeremy Roenick, Teppo Numminen, and Nikolai Khabbibulin.

It's a very interesting read, especially if you've got hockey withdrawal like I do.  You can read it here.

Don't forget

Keith Tkachuk and Dallas Drake were key members of that squad.

The team sold out America West Arena on an almost nightly basis when they moved down and they were also a perennial playoff team. Their problem was they could never quite get over the first round series hump.

In 1999, they led St. Louis 3 games to 1 before dropping the next three, including Game 7 at home in OT. Sure, they made the playoffs the following season and in the 2001-02 season and haven’t made the playoffs since. But that season 10 years ago may prove to be the proverbial tipping point in the history of this franchise should they move.

They win that series, they probably play Dallas, and considering the history those two teams had in the final month of the 1999 regular season, there’s no doubt that the Coyotes would have been the hottest ticket in the desert that spring. I’m kind of glad we didn’t have to go through en route to the Cup that year.
