Jonas Gustavsson Has Signed With Toronto per Sportsnet

Per one of their Swedish sources.

An announcement is expected as early as today as "The Monster" signed off on a 1-year, $900,000 to start the 09-10 season backing up Vesa Toskola.

I'm sure additional details will follow. I have checked TSN to see if they've picked on this story and they now have.

I'm sure the Stars would have loved for him to not wait so long as they missed out on several nice potential backups through free agency. But obviously, their scouts in Sweden as well as Les Jackson saw something in the kid to convince Nieuwendyk to wait him out. And he was going to disappoint one team as it was, anyway.

Time to turn the page and look for a backup in free agency.

that sucks but

there are amazing problems in chicago right now and if versteeg were available wouldnt we HAVE to make a strong push? i understand we’re poor and everything but kid has a great right shot, and is young, talented and NHL ready. wouldnt hicks go for that?

It's going to be very expensive to get either Versteeg or Barker

What could happen is that Chicago overpays to keep them. I don’t think Dallas had the budget or room.

With Chicago last night.

It’s finally over. And that’s fine with me. All this fuss over an unproven commodity…. let’s just go sign whatever’s left out there and be done with it.

barker signed a 3 yr deal last night seemingly making versteeg odd man out

You just had a feeling this was going to happen.

Toronto makes sense, it was his favorite team, and it’s high profile.

I hope he does well and there’s no hard feelings from me. I wish the decision had come quicker but that’s just the way it goes.

I'm sure by the time TOR and DAL meet

Any ill will I hold towards the kid will be gone.

And the fact he’s a kid probably excuses him from any flack he’d normally get for holding out so long and causing the teams on his list to miss out on some quality backups in free agency.

Not to mention as I’ve been saying for a while, the fact the Leafs have gone out and brought in a handful of very good defensemen makes the choice easy for Jonas. I hope he does well in Toronto because he does seem like a genuinely nice kid.

As for the Stars, Nieuwendyk gambled and lost. This team needs a backup goalie in the worst way but there are still afew decent ones out there… Gerber would be a solid option as a backup.. Kevin Weeks, Curtis Sanford… Hell for the right price I’d even entertain the idea of Wade Dubielewicz.

yeah his mothers last dying wish was hard to compete with. BY THE WAY what kind of mother puts that sort of pressure on a kid upon her death bed? what if no canadian team were interested?

So I was just looking over the ages of all the goaltenders left out there…. yuck.

long toothed goalies

yeah the ages suck but really we’re only asking that whoever we bring in gives us 20-30 games this season, all we need to do is pick and choose the right games for him to play I.E. phoenix

ok how do i do the cell phone update post thing?

by sundancekid on Jul 7, 2009 9:15 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

the winner is... Tippett

first of all, i’m no dave fan… his substitution in my opinion wasn’t bad. i just really wanted to be a fly to see how much joy this brought to dave…

watching Joe failling all the way in this free agency really make me see dark future ahead for the stars…

isn’t just skrastins and peters that dallas needs… He needs to rebuild the D like Burke just done in Toronto…. not mentioning the goaltender…

Any GM Free Agent?

How did Nieuwendyk fail? How?

He’s not allowed to spend any money. So…

Joe’s not having a good offseason to start off his GMing career. Makes me worry about the future with Joe holding the leash. Gj losing Jonas to the great Toronto Maple Leafs.
