2009 NHL Free Agency open thread

Free Agency starts NOW: What should the Stars do?

The 2009 NHL Free Agency period has officially started and already we've seen some interesting news start flying around the league about Dany Heatley, Dwayne Roloson, Marian Hossa and a number of other big-name free agents.

None involve the Dallas Stars.

We've already gone over how the Stars' self-imposed low budget will affect how this team approaches free agency. The team is pretty much set with a good group of forwards, but a key defenseman and a backup goaltender could go along way to making the Stars a very formidable team once again. As much as I love our group of young guys on the blue line, I can't help but think we still need a big veteran to settle things down. Mattias Ohlund would be nice. So would Jordan Leopold.

Or just re-sign Sergei Zubov (and pray he's healthy).

Use this thread as a tracker for all the big moves of the day around the league and if any news breaks regarding the Dallas Stars, we'll put it up.

That’s not a surprise. Identical contracts for identical twins.

NHL Live reporting

That Mattias Ohlund has signed with Tampa Bay.

Somewhere, Art is weeping silently.

They gave Vancouver a little bit of a discount.

That’s ok with me. I don’t think they’re ever going to get Vancouver a cup. If they do it will be Luongo’s doing more so than theirs.

From TSN:
TSN has confirmed Mattias Ohlund signing with Tampa Bay. It’s seven years, and average of $3.75 million per year.

Course

Where do the Hawks have the cap room to sign him?

Hossa with the Blackhawks….yuck. Go back East. Everyone just go East.

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2009 11:47 AM CDT reply actions

That new cut and paste is pretty nice, huh? (something they should have given us at the onset)

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2009 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

There’s no way on Scuderi. He’s going to get PAID for that play in game 6, and we’re not “paying” very well right now.

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2009 12:10 PM CDT reply actions

Scuderi I think is a bit overrated at this point… I’d much rather see Komisarek.

Per Tweet from the guys at SecondCityHock
What a surprise.. all the Hossa to the Hawks rumors are looking to be bunk

by Art Middleton on Jul 1, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Brian Burke

According to TSN, is in Europe right now talking to Gustavsson

by Kent K on Jul 1, 2009 12:52 PM CDT reply actions

Where’s Niuewy? Jackson?

They could be there too.

Hossa to Chicago

Darren Dreger informed his sources have indicated the deal is done, but he’s awaiting confirmation.

Per TSN live blog.

And PuckDaddy live blog (yeah, I double verify on these)

Pierre LeBrun (the real one) reports it is 12 years, $5.2 million per season for Hossa. I had signing, not details.

That’s Pittsburgh tribune web site mentioned the Wild and Scuderi more specifically, says Scuderi is out of the Pens price range.

If someone is out of ANYONE’s price range, surely they’re out of our price range.

Can we get a rich co-owner not suffering too much economically? This free agency looks so good, yet we probably won’t any major move besides getting a back-up goaltender.

by Why on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM CDT reply actions

It is very painful to know we have 11 million in cap room that won’t be doing anything. That’s a couple of all-stars worth of pay roll.

But of course don’t forget that the cap is projected to go way down next year.

Come on Joe!!

I hope something is going on with the Monster,, they can’t be idle much longer. Kinda think w should have grabbed Boucher again.

by rburk32981 on Jul 1, 2009 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

What’s going with the Monster is that Brian Burke is in Sweden and so far as we know, the Stars are now.

by Brad Gardner on Jul 1, 2009 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

We don't know that for sure

Maybe Nieuwendyk isn’t in Sweden but Les Jackson and Tim Behrhardt probably are. They have nothing else to do right now than to try and sign Gustavsson, and they’ve been the ones going after him this whole time. He knows them, that’s who he’s worked with.

Plus, the Stars ate a much quieter organization than Burke, by far.

Niitymaki and brent johnson I think are still available,, Fernandez could come back and play,, he would have to take a huge paycut from his 3 or 4 million though.
