Defending Big D NHL Trade Deadline coverage & live blog

NHL Trade Rumors and Hockey Blogs - SB Nation NHL Trade Deadline

It was a fairly quiet deadline with most of the players thought to be on the move being traded. Calgary and the New York Rangers were the biggest gainers on the day, with the Flames acquiring Jordan Leopold and Olli Jokinen. The Rangers were able to add young defenseman Derek Morris and skilled forward Nik Antropov.

Unless news comes out soon, Jay Bouwmeester will stay put in Florida, who also added Chris Neil from Ottawa.

The Stars didn't make a trade, although they were rumored to be in talks for Mark Recchi. They did add a skilled center in Brendan Morrison, picking him up off waivers from Anaheim.

Filip Kuba

Just signed a three year contract extension with Ottawa. So cross his name off the list.

We have our first big trade of the day!

Senators deal Antoine Vermette to Columbus for goaltender Pascal Leclaire.

Pascal Leclaire...

Said that he learned he was traded by watching TSN online.

It's an interesting move for Ottawa...

Leclaire hasn’t been good this season but he’s been dealing with some injuries. But now the Sens have three goalies and could be moving Auld or Elliot.

Lmao.....

TSN and Burke seem to be a bit….unfriendly with each other.

And For Those Whose Cable or Satellite Provider Offers NHL Network

Free preview between now and Saturday night.

I’ve got a cup of coffee to help me wake up from last night’s West Coaster on my right and the NHL Network on the left.

And TSN in my second monitor.

Kaberle

Any chance he comes to town to help solidify the D-Corps, maybe at the expense of Trevor Daley? Toronto gets good PR and we get a one year rental to bring veteren leadership (like Matty Norstrom) until Vishnevsky is ready this summer/fall.

Doubtful...

Burke has been adamant that Kaberle is staying put.

Plus,he just re-injured his hand again last night.

Here's a conversation piece:

Is Alex Ovechkin’s over the top celebrations and big personality good or bad for hockey?

I Don't Think So

I like Ovie because he’s the anti-Crosby.

by Brandon Bibb on Mar 4, 2009 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

Good

Given that the NHL is still fighting with the Big Three for popularity, I think Ovie gives them someone to market. Personality is generally a good thing (even too big of one, i.e., Manny Ramirez) to generate conversation and interest.

Look at Otter, the style of play and the “agitator” role that he has had prior to be the #1 LW, fits in to what Dallas-ites like to see in a pro athlete down here.

GREAT for hockey

The NHL needs a marketable, “our guys love the game” personality like that.

Flames and Coyotes in talks

Supposedly about trading Olli Jokinen to the Flames.

Richard Durrett goes over the best and worst trade deadline deals the Stars have made.

Read it here.

The Worst is easy: The horrible trade that sent Nieuwendyk and Langenbrunner to New Jersey.

He also says that he’s still unclear on where he stands on the Brad Richards trade.

Wasn't a deadline deal

but anyone who doesn’t think Sergei Zubov for Kevin Hatcher was the best trade in franchise history has to be smoking something strong.

With the economy looming large in teams’ minds, could the Stars potentially get good players without having to trade players simply by picking up the remaining salary?

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

by DerekSTheRed on Mar 4, 2009 11:30 AM CST reply actions

Well...that's already kind of happened.

About ten big-name players were placed on waivers yesterday by teams trying to clear up some cap space. The Stars picked one up with Brendan Morrison.

But could it happen again?

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

by DerekSTheRed on Mar 4, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions

It could, yeah.

But two teams can’t just agree to do so, like team A saying we’ll waive him and team B will pick him up. You have to remember there’s waiver rules involved, mainly that the teams with the worst records have first dibs on any team placed on waivers.

Here's a quick thought for discussion...

Does the Morrison acquisition free up one of the other center/wingers to be traded for a defensemen?

on Twitter suggested something like that.

Like Sutherby being moved for a puck moving defenseman. Though I can’t think of anyone in mind.
