A message to Dallas Stars fans
[UPDATE] Since last night when I wrote this post I have heard from several fans who were at the game Saturday night. It was their sincere belief that the "boos" at the end of the game were being directed at some terribly questionable officiating. That being said, the point of this post still stands.
This has been a frustrating season for Dallas Stars fans.
We enjoyed a magical post-season run last year and for the first time in years the city of Dallas was buzzing about their hockey team. Never had I seen American Airlines Center so raucous, so alive and it felt so special to be a part of such a great time in the franchise's history. No one believed in this team except for the fans and the players on the ice. Night after night we saw heroic feats and incredible moments, even putting the fear into the Detroit Red Wings that a 3-0 series lead was never safe.
Believe. That was the slogan for this year. "Our team, our time". It was the perfect set up for what could be the perfect season. It was the ten-year anniversary of the Stars' one and only Stanley Cup win. The team was building off an incredible playoff run and it seemed like this team could only get stronger. Optimism had never been higher for the Stars, a team that over the past few years had thrived in the underdog role. Some questioned if perhaps this team couldn't handle the pressure of becoming the favorites.
Nobody could have predicted what the 2008-2009 season would eventually become.
If there is one thing I have always maintained in my life as a sports fan is that you must always stick behind your team no matter what, through the ups and the downs. Disagree with management all you want, worry about what moves may or may not happen and by all means give your opinion on what you think needs to be done.
Sports fans have all the right in the world to bemoan the bad times and say their piece on what they thinks needs to change; they're the ones shelling out money to go to the games, buy the merchandise and support the advertisers. There are some franchises out there that act like they couldn't give a damn about their fans, never doing what it takes to build a winning team and forever living in mediocrity.
But not the Dallas Stars.
Last night I witnessed something I never thought I would see in my lifetime as a Stars fan. In the final seconds of the game against the Panthers, a disastrous 6-3 loss, fans across the arena joined in together to collectively rain boos down upon the ice. Programs were launched, cups thrown and a feeling of outright disgust was laid out in the open for all to see.
Perhaps the booing wasn't so much intended for a Stars team that has gone 4-12-2 in its last 18 games, as much as it was directed as some very questionable officiating in the final minutes of the game. Perhaps it was just pent up frustration overwhelming the collective and not a serious stab at the players or the team. Whatever the reason, the booing and the show of a lack of class by fans got me thinking about a disturbing trend I've noticed among Stars fans in general the past several months.
Dallas Stars fans, for the most part, are spoiled. It's painfully obvious and never has it been as obvious as it is now. You have your base contingent of die-hard, never give up fans but overall this town is filled with fair-weather fans that are only interested in a team that is winning, that wins a lot and wins consistently.
I have been a fan of the Dallas Stars since 1993, the season the team arrived in Dallas. I thought it was the greatest thing ever, a big professional ice-hockey team in my town. The Metroplex immediately embraced this new attraction as well and the team instantly became a sensation. It didn't hurt that right off the bat the Stars were a contending team, sweeping a first-round series against the Blues the first year the team was in Dallas.
Can you imagine what the response to the Stars might have been if they didn't make the playoffs the first eight years they were in town?
This city and its fans caught on to Dallas because here was a team that exemplified win at all costs team mentality that sports fans adore. The strategy and approach of the team hasn't changed in 16 years; build a team around hard-working veterans, classy guys with grit and integrity. It wasn't the flashiest style of play and it wasn't the most popular, but Stars fans embraced it as something that was integral in the makeup of this team.
In 1999, with the Stars on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup, the city of Dallas didn't have much to pin their sports hopes on. The Cowboys were horrible, the Mavericks rebuilding and the Rangers were, well they were the Rangers. This entire city rallied around the Stars, providing a driving force behind a team that most never thought they had the strength or firepower to make it to the end. It was a magical year, and I'll never forget the feeling of being at Reunion Arena, of downtown Dallas exploding in a cacophony of car horns after every win, going crazy with fellow fans at watching parties, running down the stairs in my boxers in the middle of the night going nuts when Brett Hull scored the clinching goal. It was a special time for this team and it exemplified everything about what being a fan is all about.
Fast-forward a few years and things changed. The Stars move into the state of the art American Airlines Center, a beautiful place to watch a hockey game but one that lacked the atmosphere of Reunion. The Dallas Mavericks are relevant for once and the city has moved on to gather around their first love, the Dallas Cowboys who are once again winning more than losing. The Dallas Stars were a great thing but now it's back to what has always mattered most.
Left in the wake is a Dallas Stars franchise that has been the third most successful team in the NHL over the past 15 years. Only twice since 1993 have the Stars missed the playoffs and only once has this team not finished with a winning record. This franchise has carried on the tradition of hard working, team-oriented play, never backing down from a challenge, never quitting and always playing their hardest until the very end.
This season has been no different. Never in their time in Dallas has this team faced this much adversity, this many challenges in so short of a time. Watch the games and you will see that this team is giving 100% every time they are on the ice, even though lately their best just hasn't been good enough.
It's an odd place for Stars fans to find themselves in. Here is their beloved team, floundering when the stakes are at their highest. But it's not as if this team has given up and decided to tank the rest of the season. NO! This team is giving it all they have, every moment they are on the ice and they are paying the price.
Stephane Robidas, with his team down two goals with less than a minute to play is still doing everything possible to make the play and gets injured while trying to take the shot.
Toby Petersen breaks his foot blocking a shot.
Brian Sutherby gets hurt while selling out his body to block a shot on the penalty kill. The Stars were down by two goals at the time.
Brad Richards fighting and clawing to push his rehab in order to return to the ice to help out the Stars. In his game back he breaks his other hand and is out for the season.
Steve Ott, never backing down and never giving up and always looking to give his team a boost no matter how dire the circumstances.
Countless others playing through and pain and injury because they must; there's no one else who can step in and help.
Dallas Stars fans should feel privileged and honored to be following such a great team as this. Consistently, without fail this franchise has done everything possible to maintain a winning atmosphere and to put their best team on the ice. They've never compromised their vision and when bad decisions are made they quickly correct their mistakes. Is this franchise or team perfect? Never. Yet every year 29 teams in the NHL walk away from the season trying to determine where it all went wrong and how to improve. The Stars have more often than not in the top half of teams trying to get to where that number one team ended up.
There's no doubt that this team has some tough decisions to make. Things aren't as good as just saying that all we need is our injured players to return and everything will be fine again, because we all know that isn't true.
Yet these players deserve better than to hear their fans raining a chorus of boos down upon them after a hard fought game. When you see this team give up, when you see the white flag being raised then maybe, maybe we have a right to voice our discontent so loudly and openly. But not until this team shows any form of giving up can we as a fanbase show the type of response I've seen all over the internet and newspapers.
"Fire Tippett!!"
"Get rid of Marty Turco!!"
"These players suck, we should have made a trade when we had the chance."
This team has thrived for so long based on calculated decisions and planning. Sometimes things don't work out but the Dallas Stars have always ended up on the right side more often than not.
Perhaps we should give them the chance to fix things before we give up on them again.

This team did everything it could to make the playoffs
There was just not enough gas left in the tank after all of the injuries that riddled the roster.
The final 21 minutes of the game last night was terrible but that can be blamed on the poor officiating and beaten down, worn out, rag-tag group that Tippett is forced to use every night. This season can’t be blamed on anyone but lady luck. I’ll admit, I find myself blaming Turco more often than not for this season, especially after last night’s debacle, but the decimated d-corps has taken a toll on this whole team.
All we can do is look forward to next season and hope that Lady Luck will be on our side once again.

AMEN BROTHER!
Hello everybody! First time poster here!
Im not ashamed to admit, what you wrote brought a tear to my eye (almost).
The last thing our boys need is to hear boos and have things thrown on the ice! I know its not been the best of times but you have to take the bad with the good in order to appreciate the good times.
We will be back and right now folks is the time to show your support and let our guys know we have their backs!

Welcome!
That’s exactly what I’m trying to convey. It’s when times are toughest is when the team needs the most support. Imagine if you were a player and you’re getting your ass kicked night after night, and no matter how hard you tried things just aren’t going right.
Imagine how you would feel inside if your home crowd stood and applauded your effort, knowing how hard this team has battled and cheered you on no matter what the final score was.

Hopefully that will happen when the last home game is over with.
I don’t know what crowd would stand and applaud after a home loss in a tight playoff race.

I'm not expecting that response nightly.
And like I said, the boos could have a combo of frustration and anger at the officiating.
I just don’t want Stars fans to get too jaded. Step back for a bit and be thankful for the team we follow.

That is a very good post
I really love the Stars and it is so sad to see their season coming to an end so soon. I do know that they will come back stronger and more determined to go all the way next season, of that there is no doubt.

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!
Well said, Brandon. I was really saddened at hearing that the crowd was booing. I’ve not seen that in person and hope I don’t. We have tickets for the last home game and I can tell you, we will be applauding this team. They have shown more heart and pure gumption than I’ve seen in the sports world in a long time.

Kind of a cheap shot at the Rangers............
In 1999, the Texas Rangers won their 3rd division title in a 4 year span. I know they only won 1 playoff game in those 3 seasons, but to say the “Rangers, well they were the Rangers” in 1999, that was a bit of a low blow.
As for every season since 1999, the Rangers have been the Rangers. They have sucked, no doubt.
Sorry to nitpick. 99% of what was stated in the post was very well said, in my opinion.

Well, look...
Yeah, the Rangers won the division, but still got swept later that season in the playoffs. Stars mania started in the winter and when they won the Cup, it was still June. And yeah, they were still the Rangers. However, I’m not taking shots at anyone or the team, since I’m nearly as avid a fan of them as I am the Stars. I was just stating how the city reacted to the Stars in 1998 and 1999. It was just the perfect formula for Dallas to embrace them.

i never boo
but i can tell you i turned off the tv after the 2nd period knowing that the stars had no chance to win the game, i am sorry but its true. Too often this year have i wasted my time watching a 3rd period that was lost before it can begin.
The stars played their guts out this year and i love them to death this just was not their year.

Saturday's Game
I was at Saturday’s game and it seemed the fans were booing at the referee job rather than the Stars. The Stars booed when they thought Ott was ejected and cheered loudly when he was brought back on the ice. While I’ll agree there are a fair amount of fair-weather fans, Saturday’s game wasn’t the case.
The Stars have done just about as good as they could considering all the injuries this season. As for fans wanting to trade Turco or fire Tippett, they are mistaken. Both are solid, this season was just not in the cards for the Stars. I think once the players have a chance to get healthy in the offseason, the Stars will be back in a big way.

Thanks for the info.
Yeah, the early reports from the game from some people were about how the crowd booed, that kind of thing. I was incredulous, could not believe it. But since this post went up last night, I’ve received a fair number of responses telling me otherwise. So that’s really good to hear. I like to think Stars fans are better than that.

Stars fans
Hard8 – Get off it! This is about the Stars and the phrase that was used was and is totally appropriate.
Lifewish – Turned off your TV and wasted your time watching???? Why weren’t you at the arena? Don’t give me the “cost” line because there have been half price tickets and $15.00 tickets nearly every week. I am on a totally inadequate fixed income (LOL) but I find a way to purchase season tickets because I love that team, and hockey in general. I definitely AM NOT suggesting that you, or anyone else, should be a season ticket holder but what I do suggest is that you do try to come to a few games at the AAC. This will have many effects. Not only will you get to see in person the very best, IMO, sport and best conditioned athletes but you will see first hand the grit and passion that the team plays with. You cannot see that on TV. The game becomes so much more when you are there supporting the team. Again, I’m not chiding you for not going but just telling you it would be wonderful if we could fill that house at every game with fans.
BRANDON Now I will salute you. Yesterday you complimented me on my comments and today I applaud you for yours. This is absolutely THE BEST thing that can be done for the team, besides fans coming to the AAC and supporting them in person. I have not seen any other comments such as this but rather I see how the team is fading, really bad team and year, etc. This team has fought, clawed and scratched its way most of the year to stay in “the running.” There is only so much adversity any team can take. This year we have seen the Stars hit with so many trials that you would think they had just come out of a natural disaster. They have heart and desire but when you take as many players out as we have had to do, the remainder are expected to do the work in triple time. Anybody ever been through a “workforce reduction”? Those employees that are left are severely tested as they take on the terminated employee’s workload. It wears you down and burns you out. The Stars have been through this and they are still going. They may be a little slower and some of the plays may not be as sharp as when the team was whole but they care about the game and, most of all, they care about the fans.
I must admit, I AM NOT a fan of the current goalie but that didn’t just start this year. The feeling I’ve had about him has not just developed but is an ongoing thing for more than just this season. I still think that he is not the goalie to take this team to the Cup finals but, I will say, Marty is part of the team and I love the team so I support ALL of the team.
Bandwagon fans annoy me. Either you are or you are not a fan but, regardless of your feelings for the Stars, IT IS NEVER APPROPRIATE TO BOO OR THROW ITEMS ON THE ICE. Not one of those players had anything to do with the injuries incurred this year. Not one of them caused it or willed the season to be what it has become. Not one player does not want a CUP win. They are loyal and dedicated and are doing the best they can with this insane season of injuries and “sloppy seconds.” Again, as I stated yesterday, I am of the belief that the boos and trash were directed towards the officials. I hope that was the case and I choose to believe that no fan would lower themselves to that type of action.
What we all need to do is talk up the Stars this summer and try our best to bring in new fans. You will rarely ever see me in anything but a Stars sweat or tee shirt and I have checks with the logo on them. I am constantly questioned about the Stars or people will come up to me and say that they are a hockey fan that moved from another state, etc. Any number of topics can result in a conversation about hockey and the Stars. You would be surprised at the interest you will get. Come on fans and show your total support for a team that has given all they have, including broken bones and torn up knees, to bring you the very best in sporting entertainment. They WILL be back next season and I know they will make us proud. Come out to the training camps this summer and watch the guys up close and personal and talk to them after their practice or get autographs. They are probably the most fan oriented team around. Let’s be totally Stars oriented. GO STARS!!!!!

bro
I was not at the game because i have 2 kids, one is 5 and one is 2 and i could not find a babysitter for them and did not want to take them because it is hell making the trek with two small kids..
as far as going to games, i usually only make 2-5 games a year. I think thats great that you can get season tickets on your fixed income and if i really wanted to skimp back on other things i could, but i don’t really want to. I love the stars as much as the next but i can love them and watch them perfectly fine at home.

Well
I haven’t been in the Big D since I was two. Lived in New Zealand and Australia since but found a way to follow Dallas sports teams (thank god for satellite TV).
I’m probably always going to stick by this team since they brought the first major sports championship I was old enough to experience. I was too young to experience the 90’s Cowboys dynasty and ever since I became old enough to be a rabid, hardcore sports fan, none of my teams have actually won a championship. I’m starting to think I’m cursed, but eh…
Anyway, this team has shown a lot of heart this season to play upwards from the cellar, dealing with the injury loss of their leader and stick as a unit. It was just unfortunate that eventually, they just couldn’t keep playing at such a high standard night in, night out. They simply ran out of gas, and more injuries didn’t help either.
But they have a great chance of bouncing back next season, especially if they can hold onto role players in FA. Morrow will be back. Richards will be back. Neal, Eriksson and Fistric have all stepped up over the past season. This team still looks pretty good for the future, and Modano hasn’t reached his use-by date yet. Hopefully they can resign Jeri and Sergei and they can prove they still have a little in the tank.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
