ESPN: Sean Avery assigned to AHL
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com is reporting that the Dallas Stars will assign Sean Avery to the Hartford Wolfpack on Tuesday.
This pretty much confirms that New York will attempt to claim Avery off of re-entry waivers soon, unless another team with a worse record nabs him first.
So long, Sean Avery.

good riddance
How does this affect us cap-wise? I know if they claim him off of waivers, we’ll be responsible for half of his salary, but does that give us any cap relief?

Not much now, but in the long run it helps.
It saves the Stars about $3 million overall than if they just bought him out over the summer.

When does that begin?
Do the stars take the full cap hit of $3.875M this year? Do they only then take half of that next year?
I was just looking at the payroll for this year and next year and seeing where we stood in terms of the cap after this year. With Lehts and Zubies deals up this year, and the only other significant FAs we have being Sydor, Lundquist and Sutherby, we should have a chance to be a player in the FA market, no?
Id expect if Zubie returns it will be at a significant discount from his current deal, and theyd look at a discounted deal for Lehts as well. I cant imagine Sydor getting more than a 1 yr offer to return, probably at about his current rate. And Lundquist and Sutherby might be in for slight raises, depending on their play.
