Dallas Stars Tuesday morning notes

Obviously the big news coming out of last night's game is the injury to Brad Richards. TSN is reporting it as a broken wrist yet Mike Heika had trouble last night getting confirmation from the team. He thinks that TSN is most likely correct, however.

The big question is now how bad the break is and that's something we should find out sometime today. There's no question that he will be missing some time and now the Stars need to juggle some things to fill his spot at center.

Last night I mentioned Toby Petersen as a guy who could slide up to second line center, but Heika brings up a guy I completely missed. The Stars have Tom Wandell at their disposal in Sweden and he is certainly capable of stepping in and producing. Heika also mentions Brian Sutherby and Joel Lundqvist as guys who could play center as well. The Stars should at the very least call up Chris Conner who had enjoyed some nice chemistry on a line with Modano and Neal.

Another thing to take away from this game is how important that win was for the Stars. It puts them back into 5th spot alone at 63 points, but there is just 4 points between them and 10th place Minnesota.

The Stars next play Edmonton at home on Thursday and kick off a six game homestand in which they play Chicago, San Jose, St. Louis and Anaheim. Every single game from here on out is more important than the last.

Star-divide

Darryl Sydor on Brad Richards' injury:

Whatever it is, we just have to find a way to fight through it. We have found a way to overcome injuries all season, so we know we can do it. It's just a matter of digging in and playing as a team.

Marty Turco:

We didn't play our best game tonight, but we showed a some character in the third period and played better. At the end of the day, we got the two points and that's all that really matters.

James Neal:

It was a big loss once Richy got hurt, but guys had to pick up the slack once he went out. We have had injuries all year, and we'll fight through it.

I decide before I shoot what I am going to do. Totally different because he is a right-handed catcher. I was shooting low blocker. He's a great catcher, so I wanted to get it up and I was able to get it up and over.

You want to step up and make a big play and contribute. I want to be a guy that can put the puck in the net in that situation.

Dave Tippett:

I thought the first period and third period we did some good things. The second period we were behind it a little bit. They threw some pucks at the net. A lot of outside stuff that just led to a lot of scrambles, but give our guys credit, they hung in there. We killed some crucial penalties at the end and found a way to get two points.

It's just so tight, and you need every point you can get. I guarantee you we're going to come down to the last week [of the season], and you're going to be thinking about the points you could have had.

What Marty meant to say...

“Everyone not named me didn’t play their best game tonight. I was, however, a hockey god.”

I only caught the last half of the third period on, but Turco was unbelievable in that timespan.
