Game Day Thread: Dallas Stars @ St. Louis Blues

Game 11: Dallas Stars @ St. Louis Blues
Saturday, October 24 2009 · 7:00 p.m. CT
Scottrade Center - St. Louis, Missouri
TV: My27 | Radio: 1310 The Ticket
A bit of an unconventional game thread tonight, because I wanted to combine the GDT with some news.
More after the jump.
First of all, Marty Turco will be in net for the Stars tonight and Ty Conklin will be in for the Blues.
Second, Matt Niskanen will not be playing tonight. Neither Mike Modano nor Jere Lehtinen made the trip to St. Louis, so they won't be playing. Lehtinen is not progressing at all with his intercostal muscle injury, and there is still no telling when he might return.
This is the last game in a busy stretch for the Stars, who will have three games off before playing Wednesday. The hope is that Modano and Niskanen are ready to play then.
Projected lines (based on lines used before the Ott and Richards injuries):
Morrow - Ribeiro - Benn
Neal - Richards - Erksson
Ott - Wandell - Brunnstrom
Barch - Sutherby - Petersen
Things to watch for:
- A backed down defense: We've seen a trend start to develop with these Stars. The defense has been good to great in open ice defense, rarely allowing forwards to to get by them through the neutral zone. Yet when the play gets close to the net, the defense backs off and an open road is paved for a clean skate to the goal. The majority of goals allowed this season have been from within five feet of the net, and the defensemen seem almost tentative to get physical and control their territory around their net.
- Get some shots!! The Stars have been stymied lately and haven't peppered the opposing goaltender like we'd expect such them to. Expect Crawford to put the fear into these forwards to make sure the get the shot on net.
- Turco. He's played better as of late, but needs to continue to improve. Slowly he's returned to near the form we expect him to be at.
I won't be able to join in the game thread tonight, and will be watching on DVR later. Go Stars!!!!!!!!!

Go Stars!
Finally a game staring at a decent time for those of us in east coast time. I hope the Stars can pull out a big WIN! Miss you Brandon. Happy Saturday everyone!
No TJ Oshie
And while I hate to see anyone hurt, I gotta admit he killed the Stars last season, so I don’t mind not seeing him in this game
First goal? I’m thinking a Stars win and the Stars win when they score first, so: I’ll go with James Neal.
4-3 Stars.
Barch got owned.

Puck is one point.
Goalie is two points.
Ref is three points.

I have this theory
That you only get so many quality chances in a hockey game, and if you use them all up before scoring a goal, you’re just kind of screwed.
The Stars used up most of their quality chances in that period and have nothing to show for it.
Not at all!
It wasn’t pretty, but they don’t have to be on the road.

Not only did I call that, but...
Moments before I posted this on twitter for some good karma http://twitpic.com/mtjvz
another save by auld!
lol. that was actually pretty good.
He's stopping pucks on the bench...
Make him the starter!! lol

Can't agree with that Crombeen call..
If you call Crombeen then they should have called Ott..
As it was good PK for the Blues.. Stars just didn’t move the puck around enough.

"a whole mess of awesome"
I think Razor would approve of that comment. :)

Heh...
Little bit of a dive by Neal there…

Great save by Conklin!
Oiler fans wish he did more of that back in 2005-06

Thank you, Otter.
He has been up to his old irritating self.
Ah! Oh, how we have missed seeing that.

Agreed.
Not enough movement or shots on that 5 on 3 PP for my liking.

It should be...
Blues haven’t given them much to cheer about.
Stars haven’t given the Blues much to give the Blues something to give the fans something to cheer about.

That goal
Is not the best thing that happened this period.
Brunnstrom getting crosschecked and Razors “like a dwarf at a urinal” comment are tops for me. ;)
He was big in the first period!
Without some of those saves, this game may have been different.

Damnit Woywitka
Look at those idiots cheering like it matters.
At the AAC, down by 4 with 3 to play…no one’s standing up.
Aulds had an exciting game!

I don't wanna say that was a dirty hit...
But Ott sure didn’t make any effort to get his knee out of the way either…
It’ll be interesting to see if Ott gets punished for that.
Yeah, that one may cost him in more than one way, if he aggravated his injury and gets a punishment.
Otter has a hard time knowing where to draw the line.

As a guy who is able to root on Cam Janssen and DJ King . . .
and someone who used to cheer the likes of Darin Kimble, Tony Twist and Rick Meagher . . . .
and also being one of the only Blues fans that hasn’t been kicked off this site as of yet . . . .
If Steve Ott’s play in this game is of any indication as to how he plays in 82 games of a season, I am not stunned that he missed better than half a season last year. And honestly, I’m stunned that he’s still able to walk at this point.
I am stunned also that he has not been given the McSorley treatment yet, to be quite honest with you. I would almost say that he deserved it in the second period, but I’m not THAT classless.
To say that this game was turned by referees that are obviously swayed by referees that don’t know WHAT they’re calling, much less WHY they’re calling it . . . you should consider yourselves lucky.
Steve Ott has become nothing more than a piece of shit to me. And I’d rather things like that not come from one early regular season game, but what I saw of him (and other Stars) today was typical English Premier League bullshit.
How you root for this team is beyond me.
Go Cowboys.

Its funny to me...
how the blues fans seemed to overlook all the crosschecking going on by their team all night long.
Yes, Ott did seem to go a little too far with that last hit. He should have tried to get his legs out of the way. But at the same time, I dont think it was his intention to cut it that close. hitting knees like that can be equally bad for both players.
But with all the fighting going on, you know he had to be worked up, since 21 players in blue were already gunning for him at that point anyways…
Really wish I had the option of listening to Razor. I think I might try and listen to the audio later just to hear what he has to say…
Well said.
Apparently, they don’t recognize crosschecking and/or boarding in Bluesland.
After watching Ott’s hit on Crombeen in slow mo, several times now (hub enjoys getting full use of that remote/DVR), I don’t think Ott was going for his knee. Tripping, maybe, but not intentional kneeing.
I read the GDT of the St Louis blog. Really made me appreciate DBD. Thanks Brandon, et al, for what you have created here. And thank you to all the commenters here, who have a real vocabulary and know how to use it.

steve ott
is a disgrace, i mean seriously i didn’t think you could go lower than avery, but then ott sets up that limbo bar, bends like beckham and proves me wrong.

How many minutes after that
sweet hip check was that?
I want to mark that on the DVR and I hoped you could help me find when it was, in relation to that that awesome check on Colaiacovo?
So that's why The Chief refers to you all as the Bitter Bitch Blues fans
You know, hip check are still legal guys. And it’s not like the fragile Coliachivo didn’t see him coming.
Might have been a bit late, but you know what you’re getting with him.
And for Blues fans to complain about Ott after Dallas Drake played for them for so many years…
Hypocrisy be thy name.
The difference between a good clean hip check and a cheap late low bridging is the player getting hipchecked has the puck. Anybody can low bridge a guy without the puck not expecting a low hit. Watch some of Bobby Plager’s hip checks to see how its done cleanly using some skill.
Ott will get his due in time.
Some days its just not worth chewing through the restraints
I had no problem with the hip check, actually.
My issue was throwing down the gloves before anyone was actually coming to go after him (Petro was close but unsure of intention). It’s as if he knew he did something wrong.
It’s like in football . . . if the defensive back/linebacker puts his hands up as if he pushed a guy before the ball got to the receiver, he draws a flag just about every time. I’d really prefer that not reach the NHL ranks . . . we all know there’s enough EPL BS going on with diving and such.

Nice finish to a road trip
Glad we were able to finish off this road trip with a W. I understand the frustration of the blues fans but the Stars have also had games with the same things. Seriously, all teams have games where they feel the refs are against them. All teams have games where players get injured, be it with legal hits (Ott’s hip check) or questionable hits (the knee on knee). I think every Stars fan who was a fan of this team in 1998 understands how devastating a knee on knee hit can be. The key is how you deal with the adversity.
Should make our next game against St. Louis interesting.
