Houston Aeros

I'm attending my first AHL game tonight as the Houston Aeros take on the Binghamton Senators.  I recently learned that the Aeros are the primary affiliate of the Minnesota Wild, but Dallas has had a temporary affiliation agreement (as with several other teams until the Texas Stars begin play).  I was wondering which, if any, Stars-controlled players are currently on their roster?  Is there a reason why the Aeros never became a primary affiliate of the Stars organization?  I'm aware of some related history as Tippet was head coach and David Oliver played during their 1999 Turner Cup Championship season.  Also, if anyone is looking for a reason to make it out to the Toyota Center tonight, it's mullet night.

Cool, thanks.

It seems weird that a permanent agreement was never established between the Stars and Aeros. Perhaps Dallas had been planning to add its own affiliate for quite some time.

The Stars' orginization kept Kalamazoo as an affiliate after the moved to Dallas.....

Then they switched to Iowa. That fell apart, and next year it’s the Texas Stars.

Thanks for that.

It’s all clear to me now.

The Aero's

I watched a lot of their games when they first got to Houston. They played some damned good hockey and it was a great surrogate until I could start saving enough money to make the drive up to Reunion Arena and watch the big boys play. And as if I could ever get away from the hated Dings, the only rival they had were the Detroit affiliate who were effing awesome. The Vipers. They were so smooth and quick, they probably could’ve competed at the NHL level.

Oh and while this prospects-to-90-different-affiliates thing is quirky and all, I can’t wait for the kids to get on one team all at once. It’s nice to play on different teams and make new friends and the like, but it’s better to build chemistry with your future NHL team-mates.

What's the rumpus?

Last Friday was a pretty good game as well.

After being down 2-0 in the 1st, the Aeros came back and won 3-2. They did a great job of cutting down on the huge number of shots allowed in the 1st. Very nice game and fun night.

It really will be great for all of the young Stars prospects to build together in Cedar Park. I’m especially excited since I live in north Austin and plan to attend quite a few games.

Could Houston support an NHL team? I always hear they’ve got a decent fanbase down there.

Austin’s a good place for the AHL club to go. A lot of hockey fans there for some reason.

You'd be surprised how big hockey has become in Texas

Thanks to the Stars, youth hockey has exploded in Texas. It started in Dallas and spread south. The Texas area also had several minor league teams, including the Aeros, and it’s stayed popular today. I know there are a lot of Stars fans in the Austin area who are stoked to finally get to see pro-level hockey their area.

However, about Houston. The Aeros haven’t enjoyed that great of a turnout this season so it’s tough to say if they could support an NHL team. There needs to be one in Vegas first, before we even think about Houston.
